- On February 5 and 6, 2020, the Committee on Oversight and Reform will be conducting an in-depth, two-day series of hearings held by four of its subcommittees to examine the negative effects of regulations proposed by the Trump Administration relating to children. This unique and extensive series of hearings will assess the detrimental impact of the Administration’s actions on child poverty, housing, hunger, and health.

I know poverty is affecting your confidence and self worth, in being in a room like that, but you are standing taller than anyone in that room.

People need a living wage. Working people shouldn't be figuring out how to survive daily. It isn't right. Corporations have dictated and eroded the entire system for workers,
Corporate greed is exactly what eroded this country. Corporations own these congressman and senators on both sides of the aisle.
1:56:40 I was poor as a child and was on reduced meal program. When my dad received a slight raise in pay, I lost that benefit, so I went from having a reduced lunch to none at all. I was so hungry, I went around the cafeteria and asked the other kids if I could eat their vegetables. When teachers noticed me begging to eat the other kids lima beans and broccoli, I began being sent to the nurse's office for my "medicine" just before lunch, where I was given a sandwich and milk. Our monthly income went up by $17. That is less than $5 per week. By taking me off of the reduced lunch program, my weekly school lunch cost went from $2 (or 40 cents per day) to $10 per week (or $2 per day). The $17 extra income did not change our ability to afford the cost of lunch at the regular price. The only person who suffers in situations like this are the children. If a family qualifies for free or reduced lunch, I think it is unconscionable to take the children off food programs because their parent's income went up a few dollars.

The guy from Kentucky is just gross. The thought process behind, “I don’t think the government should be involved in the minimum wage” is unbelievable. It started for a reason and it still exists for those very clear reasons. I just don’t understand the idea of allowing companies to pay people as little as possible if that’s their “propagative”. Unbelievable coming from a guy who makes over 100k a year to come to Washington and vote in our Congress a few months a year just so they can get re-elected for their next campaign; Where they will spend millions from lobbyists who get their vote anyway. It’s just gross. I wish there was a better word but I think gross sums it up.

I got lucky because my dad kept some of his "extra" work as a contractor. We lost reduced lunches twice, got groceries once a month, about 200 bucks worth, for three people. I still have food anxiety because of it. My relationship with food is anxious... Still skip meals because of finances. I work full time 10/HR. I can't visit a dentist. I can't afford to go to the hospital, cant afford to take a day off to possibly be kept in the hospital because my health is terrible.
I love what you have written here. What you have written is so ture in schools around America. I know as a teacher.
Mr. Smith is out of touch with where he came from. The first misconception is that all poor people have access to good jobs, access to transportation, access to good education, and access to good role models. His story of being able to get out and be successful is that of a small percentage. For most of us that grew up poor, we grow up to just be middle class. Being middle class is a whole different type of poor in the US. Being black doesn’t constitute him to speak for the rest of us. His proud conservative ass should stay in his lane!
Glad she pointed out that many poor people join the military because they can't earn a living any other way.

1:17:15 Amen! I remember on Jerry Springer in the 1990s the audience giving grief to a young single mother because she got a job as an exotic dancer to support herself and her 2 year old son. Her goal was to save enough so that by the time her son begins attending school, she could quit her job and attend a trade school (dental hygienist, hairdresser, or some other more "respectable" job). The audience judged her as a mom, her life choices as a single young person and her responsibilities as an adult. Where was the outrage over the man who fathered this boy and then abandoned them? I was just a kid back then, and even I had enough sense to know how the real world works. Sometimes life, despite our best intentions, can quickly turn for the worst. Ever heard of Les Miserables? Ever heard of a young woman named Fantine? Look at how much she suffered for her child. How much of herself she gave, literally (her hair, her teeth, her own body) to care for her child. Society judged her, but where was the judgment for the man who had his fun and then just left? Have we all these years later still learned nothing?
The taxpayers money, is clearly being miss spent by the people running this country. $40,000 furniture allowances, WTF! Outstanding wages! $15 muffins, specially paid for all catered 5 star lunches! God knows what rediculous thing they ferociously spend our tax money on. This country is fucked. The next generation is fucked. My sister works for 2200 a month. My brother in law takes care of the kids now. They're a family of 6. DHS is charging them $100 a month for my brother in laws snap health insurance. They have to home school the older kids because of the bullies at school (who is also the teachers son) and other bullies. And DHS is also charging them $1000 for two of my nephews and won't give my third nephew health insurance. So WTF is going on! Where is all the tax money going.!?! Why do the people running this country getting paid roughly 10 times the amount that the people in poverty make?
Ms.Hutchinson is the only person who resonated with me. It's as if she was speaking for all of the country. Well done and i appreciate her work.
This is an issue that should not be considered a party issue. This is an issue that will hinder lives of good families that work several jobs but still can't make ends meet. Children need to eat quality food and Snap provides this program. Students need to have basic needs met in order to succeed in school. Parents are doing the best they can and want the best for their children. By working together to keep the Snap Program available to our students, we are giving them a boost to do their best at school and help break this cycle of poverty. We complain that public schools are not educating our students but we are now changing our focus to look at the whole child and family address their needs . including mental, physical and social wellness. I can personally testify that by doing this, our students and families are thriving and they are able to focus on education because they are no longer stressing over meeting basic needs. It is a team effort and the Snap Program is part of the team.
The Trump administration gives not a single f**K about poor children.
if you want to see people come off poverty, fundamental changes need to occur in how 'trade' is done. prices need to stay put, and wages need to increase, without the expectation that people are to work themselves to the bone to survive. this is not the middle ages. we no longer have serfs. we have children that need attention, schooling, etc. we have weekend activities we'd like to do. we have dreams we'd like to pursue. and we have a world that can succeed in this.
some of these folks need to be forced to live for a long period off no more than 27,000 dollars a year (that's 1,040 a month), and then think about things that need to change. (and that's before taxes.)

Ms. Hutcherson will emotionally kick your ass (as a full time single mother, who is lucky to have friends amd family helping with my child; I still struggle.) Sister Campbell is understanding and while she does not grab you emotionally. She brings up amazing points (written for those in goverment who will take Ms. Hutcherson speech, unfortunately, with a grain of salt because of the way its written (it is a beautiful, heartfelt speach with heartbreaking truths) . Ms. Hutcherson grabs the soul (those whom have it) Sister Campbell will grabs their attention.
I live in wisconsin and over half of my fellow coworkers depend on others for rides to work (we don't have busses in our little towns and the 'bigger but small' towns cabs are expensive and wont travel the 45 minutes plus it takes us to get to work. Most of us work two jobs. Full/part or two full times, with children. (Those who are lucky to get government help, this means out kids go to school and then daycare.)
We depend on each other for rides to keeps our home and be able to shop. Those in the smaller towns only have gas stations and doller stores, we do depend on them and cant buy in bulk. I have even seen these small towns lose stores vital to them, because the big companies dont count that store have been "making enough money". (*cough* kmart *cough*)
If you make 45,000 or less, you are poor, especially if you have children. The price of housing is expensive, taxes are expensive, the cost of food is going up up up, the price of daycare is staggering- more than the $1.00 an hour I use to get as a teen babysitter. You have car a payment and insurance and you actually need gas.
Utilities including phone and internet which are essentials. Kids need clothes and shoes and grow regularly.
Children need many more things other than clothes and shoes...how about playing a sport which cost money including uniforms.
Health insurance and prescriptions undo able.
The system is broken, if the poverty rate was say 45,000 people could work a job and still get the help they need, they don't have to give up and actually do worse than before...they can be productive and still have their families go to the doctors and receive necessary medications. Still able to pay the bills because she works, but still gets snaps so she can feed her family too.
It's time to enhance it and make it better...let people work through until they are stronger and ready for less.
This is driving me crazy that some of these panel members think these people are not working. Ma Hutchinson said they do work, it's many people myself included we work like crazy. Being a single mom for 10 years of the 17 years after my daughter was born I've not been eligible for snap program. Hell I've not been eligible for most gov. Assistance. I work 40 plus hours a week, I make to much by $100 dollars . But no one takes in to consideration that I also pay my own health insurance which I can't let go of because it never fails I've got to have constant surgeries, or the fact I pay car ins or utilities or anything else. It drives me crazy. Ive never ever been a stay at home mom. I take care of my bills and some are in collections. My daughters father just recently started to pay child support a whopping $53 dollars a week. People need to be in our shoes . I've broken my bills down no matter how hard or much I work I'm still in the red. I don't spend big money I don't go out I don't buy new clothes. It tough!!! I make But ya know what I'll make it I've done it this far. Its a struggle but I just keep during myself off and keep trekking.

It's a no brainer, they are being totally mistreated and often caught in the catch-22's you mentioned. thanks 4 your effort. the struggle continues... have a relationship with your representatives in government. their allowances are ridiculous while way 2 many Americans suffer.
40 grand for furniture PER YEAR per congressperson is fucking criminal. Thats our taxes paying for that. They can use the same furniture that public school teachers use.

I loved the Obama's...I worked in the school system for years...the food was so often not edible. For example, I was in the nurses office who had snacks and kids that didn't have a snack would come in and get one. The lunch lady would send up some egg wheat muffins, one day the nurse said do you want one or it's time to throw them out. I took a bite and spit it out...it was disgusting. The wheat English muffin was gross.
My daughter loves sandwiches....but won't eat them at school because the wheat is gross.
I started to pay attention to the food and how much was eaten and it was staggering how much waste their was. When I grew up we had pizza, turkey & gravy with potato, subs, peanut butter and jelly, grilled cheese, cheese burgers and fries, chicken patty on a roll, and of course a vegetable or fruit with that stuff...it was good food...more importantly kids ate it up! The lunch system needs changes, just keep all the good fruit of course!

what is staring me in the face is a living wage of at least $15 would make a significant contribution to getting people off welfare programs. The economy would adjust itself to this increase in running costs for businesses, and the end result would actually be increased productivity as the increased cash flow fed itself back into the economy.

2) massive Inflation - when employers are forced to pay workers more goods cost more (for ex if you want to buy Doritos the dorito company has to pay employees more meaning their prices for goods rise so all prices will rise to match)
3)productivity would have to double - if the minimum wage increase puts people out of work like it will people will have to work twice as hard because employers staff just got cut in half
4)welfare - more people not working because of losing their job so they can’t afford food, prices will rise as well on food and everything putting more burdens on government loans, and working families

I'd love to see the billionaire people like Bezos try to live on what they pay. Those people go to work knowing it won't be enough. They are shamed by society for not making enough. American people are expected to get across the 18 mile wide grand canyon on a tight rope but the safety net only extends the 1st 5 miles. Sure you could join the military that might help you or it might ruin your mind damage your body or just take your life away. That takes an incredible amount of luck. Luck that is in short supply.

How can anyone break the cycle of poverty or addiction or any problem in America when they can’t get help ? If somebody like myself can’t get anyone to help and I’m white and outspoken how can anyone else in America get help ? It’s impossible - y’all don’t even speak English ! There are a lot of jobs that pay decent in technology field. Many opportunities. Might have to be willing to move though. You can go to a bootcamp to learn web development which, if you go to right one, is more affordable than college. Or you can self study if you already have your degree in something else. Cyber Security is looking for people. You can go to Cybrary to follow their courses and study for a SOC Analyst role(more of a beginner role in cyber), and people have gotten hired in without degrees in the field by just self studying cyber. And if you already have a degree, even if not in tech field, that's fine too as long as take some time to study. Suggest if would like to get into cyber security start with studying professor Messer free TH-cam videos for Security+ certification. After studying for the cert look up CompTIA Security+ to pay to take the certificate. One time Security plus from CompTIA currently showing $350. If you pass put on your resume and use recruiters to try and help you find a job instead of applying through a job site is suggestion. Either web development, cyber security, Java developer, DevOps(which is big right now), or something in the tech field.
Tech not my passion, but helping pay debt off in addition to our monthly bills for us. Hope this helps. :)
