Well, its most likely a calculated judgement call on his part. I know many, many people that know of the game Zelda, but can't tell you the name of the main protagonist. If he says Link instead of Zelda, that means a large portion of the audience wont understand the joke. Sometimes, you have to use the most popular terminology for jokes to land, even if they are factually inaccurate. But, the ones that are informed still understand the joke and can laugh at it, win-win. I'm simply playing devil's advocate here, i completely understand your point of view. This is coming from someone who grew up in that era.
