I don't understand everything going on, but it's fascinating. I'm a fan of Pax Ren, and this looks like a big twist on the Pax system.

The advantage of being on the profession track, grey spaces, is that you can take cards instead of auctioning them from the profession deck you are on for free equal to your reach (or mercantilism if that is lower). At 38:56 you could have just taken the card instead of auctioning.
