how do I know if it’s a connection error? will it say so on the register?

Usually what I see is an orange blinking light on the second light from the top (the top one blinking is just a low paper warning). Sometimes you'll see striping, or it doesn't print on one half of the paper. If you're in ISS45 or a POS system like it, you'll likely get an OPOS error. But this is probably the most common problem I see on these as they age.
The other main thing to do is unplug it, open the doors, take the paper and ribbon cartridge out, and then turn it over and shake it out. Get all the paper bits and dust out of it -- they block sensors and cause problems and errors.
      Good luck!

You'll see a 07, or 069 error if it has anything to do with connection error

The OPOS driver layer reports that it cannot connect to the device when it is in this state. To fix the OPOS connection error, you have to fix the print head ribbon cable problem. For some reason, the way these things are programmed, they just stop communicating with the computer when the ribbon cable to the print head is loose.

@@chrisedgar1746 I don't see how it would be a ribbon cable issue. Sounds like the interface card, if it's not getting a connection' The ribbon cable is a easy fix, a little time consuming. Just unscrew the two screws on the back of the ribbon cable, and pry it apart from the bracket with a small flat head

@@JamesWaltonHurricane I'm not sure I know what you're talking about or where you're coming from on this. What I can say is that I've seen this as the primary source of service calls for this model of printer, overwhelmingly, as they age. The store reports a blinking orange light and the computer unable to connect to the printer. Reseating this ribbon cable almost invariably resolves it, and I use this video to enable people to fix this problem without waiting for a technician to dispatch.
You can likely replicate the problem by pulling one side of that ribbon cable out 1mm or so. Be careful though; pulling it slightly loose in just the "right" way can cause the print head to rapidly heat up, and it can burn your fingers a bit and possibly damage something if allowed to continue heating.

Hi. I have the same printer and the center yellow blink light is always flashing. Can you help me ?

    • @chrisedgar1746

Sorry, missed the notification on this. If you have that center light flashing and it's not resolved by this process (try a few times), and it's also not resolved by shaking the printer out upside-down with the doors open, it could be a variety of things. A couple of times I had to take the print head completely off and either reseat it (put it back on) or replace it with another. Just be very careful doing this, as the head of the ribbon cable it seats onto is rigid but easy to break. Wiggle it back on until it starts to slide -- don't force it. I generally don't have stores do this themselves because of the risk of breaking it. Otherwise, probably the next most common thing is a problem with the automatic paper cutter -- check that you can turn the knob and it goes in and out of position and isn't getting stuck after cut or not cutting at all. If the manual cutter (the little jagged blade) is blocking or causing problems, take it out (it's pretty easy) and bend it back into a correct position. If that doesn't work, check the cable and make sure it's plugged in correctly and not damaged. Make sure both top doors are on and opening/closing correctly (if not, see if you can correct it). Check for obstructions inside the printer anywhere -- pennies love to fall in these and get stuck for some reason. If none of this works, I usually dispatch for this, and often it'll be a mechanical failure beyond my knowledge to fix and I'll replace it.
