It's sad to see comments here lambasting other guitarists like McKee for stumbling on fame and making comparisons to Michael... this isn't a football game, folks. Michael inspired Andy, Andy shared his talents and creative output with the world and has inspired MANY people that would not have heard of Hedges to give his music a listen. As a person that writes my own tunes and also loves playing Michael's music... it's so great to have the opportunity to explore and expand on what Michael inspired in me, personally. I am also not very inspired by many other musicians the way I am Michael, but if they can even catch my attention for a moment or help others reach back to artists like Hedges, de Grassi, Billy McLaughlin, Michael Manring and others... thanks to them for making the effort and practicing their asses off for so many hours trying to touch the trail MH left us all. Michael Hedges played a LOT of music before Breakfast In The Field. He lived his crazy dream and it lives-on... but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be down with disrespecting any other guitarists that were doing their best. That's not an approach that typically adds-up to such beauty and free expression. Then again... maybe he'd think my tunes were shit and laugh me off the stage. I wouldn't quit playing if he did. ;)

You know, I read your comment and realized that I had meant to say Jon Gomm, imho, as a potential Hedges contemporary. NOT because they sound alike, but because of the extremely unique and creative way they play (Gomm's use of the guitar as a percussive instrument is pretty amazing). But You are right....McKee doesn't remind me of Hedges in the slighest. Thanks for pointing this out to me.

Andy McKee has said on video and very publicly that he took up acoustic guitar in the style of Michael Hedges after hearing Michael hedges songs. He says openly that TH-cam gave him his fame and that Hedges is the inspiration and model for his style. McKee is the only one that I have heard who can faithfully reproduce the sound made by Hedges. What I haven't seen is anybody play with the fluidity that Hedges played with. You watch Hedges play and it looks like every chord is going to be a mistake and of course it's not. That ability to keep accuracy and precision in the presence of a very loose style of playing is what gave full resonating sound, to Hedges's guitar playing. McKee however does do justice to the music of Michael Hedges and because of TH-cam, the style of Michael Hedges guitar playing has been kept alive and promoted by McKee. There are others that will play his songs. That is a lot to ask of most guitar players. McKee is a talent in his own right and would be with or without the influence of Hedges. He is also one of the few who have been able to carry the music and style of Michael Hedges forward. See this video for McKee doing Areal Boundaries and his acknowledgement of Hedges influence to a mostly unknowing audience. th-cam.com/video/PkrEBUx2M5E/w-d-xo.html

I have indeed. Theres so much going on lately its seemed hard to take on any new music. Ive been re-discovering some old favs too. its funny how music changes through ones interest/life relative to time. Ive totally goten into michael manring tho. I listended to Tim Story thax for that i was always around piano as a kid and am just finding a strong interest in it. Time changes alot. But everyday i sit back go through my music and my heart beat gets up my body moves, goose bumps down my back. hah

Ugh...I have no idea why a few people think that Andy McKee sounds ANYTHING like Hedges, but I attribute it to the lack of a knowledgeable ear. Michael Hedges' music was subtle and nuanced, his mastery of his instrument beyond compare. Andy McKee is boring and ham-handed, and has none of the creative genius of a giant like Hedges.
