I am an expatriate "Brit" from Darwen (just 9 miles north of Bolton,) and living in Canada now, for the last half century. Today on TH-cam i learned of Fred Dibnah for the first time, and eagerly looked at all the steeplejacking videos of his that I could find. How wonderful that someone has taken the time and patience to capture his feats on video, what a great man and a tribute to Lancashire grit in general!
    Thank you for that,. Ed

To be fair, workplace safety has resulted in a drastic reduction in workplace injuries in the past few decades. Fred was in a trade where he did not have to rely on many other working along side him so he could afford to take a few risks without risking many others at the same time. Most modern construction sites are so complex that without safety rules and coordination, there would be unacceptable risks for workers - most of which are not nearly as skilled as Fred (not to say that even the lowest skilled construction workers aren't hard workers - most work far harder than any office worker).

One advantage working high on a church spire as opposed to a chimney, is if you fall you just might land hard enough to punch a hole in an open spot in the church cemetery. All they would need to do is fill the hole. If it happens on a Saturday, the whole congregation could attend the burial on Sunday. How cool would that be?
