My mother passed away recently...this reminded me of her so much as the first ring i ever owned was one of these given to me by my mum. I was 14. Saddly it was lost some time ago. Thankyou for this reminder. Lovely simplicity to look at but such talent to make.😊
That's one of the good things about the workshop I have. It's got a covered porch with a bench at one side so I can do anything smokey outside but still sheltered from the elements.
+Foxiepaws ACAnderson even with the covered porch make sure to put any tools that can rust away. As you can see in my videos almost all of my tools have some rust on them haha
I just may try this. I do make chainmail mail jewelry...I need to solder the ends bc I’ve invested a lot of money in silver wire. I love watching ur talent! I really think I will make this...I have a mandrel for inside work...I think I will just watch more of ur work...they are beautiful...
Great video with lots of good instruction, thanks for going to the trouble of recording your making process. I find if I saw the wire once it’s twisted and bent around the mandrel I get flatter ends that need less filing before soldering.
You can get flatter ends doing it that way. I have made twisted wire using a lot of different techniques so it's really up to you what way you prefer to do it. 😀
Using the drill is so much better than doing it by hand! It's so fast and makes for perfect twists. I was locking one end in a vise and just hand twisting, and twisting, and twisting... Lol Definitely not as efficient. I need to get a different type of drill though, I don't have a twist lock style on my drill. 😔
Very informative! I see a hammered version of this twisted wire ring at the end of this video (very nice, btw), which prompts the question: does it matter that the two wires aren't soldered together? Thanks!
If you have something long and round...sort of like an old broom handle you can put it through the ring to hold onto and just have your thumb holding the ring against it for buffing, it wont go flying then and you don't need your fingers near it either.
I make chainmail jewelry and have made a lot of silver jewelry BUT, did not solder it...what solder is best? Can I use 3 silver or gold wires in the same method? Enjoy ur video. Easy to understand...thanks u...
You should be able to use any number of wires to do this and I have a video about soldering rings. th-cam.com/video/BeSRrGi6SuI/w-d-xo.html Check out the description for a list of all the stuff I use to make my work
Can you use a dremel and a brass brush to buffer the ring? I do that with my electroformed copper rings in wondering if I would be able to do the same with soldering silver rings? Or would I need that wheel?
Well yes and no. It will not get the same look as using a polishing wheel. You can get a polishing wheel for your Dremel and use that to do the same thing 😁👍 Here is a list of the tools I use and some tools for your Dremel that you are really going to like amzn.to/2vVHz9M
i like your channel you are a good teacher you explain things well just curious can sheet copper bought from the hardware store work for some things? i've seen some dead soft and hard
lol "ignore the question" haha so you can use any copper really in sheets, just make sure it is solid 99% copper. When it comes to the hardness it really doesn't matter that much. I guess if you are doing a lot super small cuts it can be a problem when sawing and bending the metal. pepetools.com/pages/search-results-page?q=copper&aff=9
Thank you for the tutorial.. Love the rings. Can I ask you please about size's calculation, You did Ring diameter +wire gage x 3.14. What is 3,14? Does it change in different sizes? Thank you in advance
Thank you for this awesome video. Would you kindly answer this question for me.What is the polishing machine at the end called and what is the red circular brush size and name? Thanks again.
So that is a bench polisher and here is a link to one like the one that I have amzn.to/2Q4BTT6 and the red stuff is polishing compound, you can find some here amzn.to/2RVOCo3 If you have any other questions please feel free to ask. 😀👍
Such a good video. I'm really surprised that the twisted wire doesn't spring apart when you cut it to the length you need for your ring size. I always assumed it would for some reason! :-(
Thank you, if the metal you are using is soft then it will harden when it is twisted and it will stay in place. Now that you know this will stay you can make all kinds of things.
Thanks so much for this explanation which I should (if I had put my Thinking Cap on) have been able to work out for myself. I will be watching a lot more of your videos and I've now put you on my list of jewellery makers to keep an eye on :-) !
Thanks for the tutorial.Could you please tell me what gauge Sterling silver wire you use and whether it's dead soft, half hard,or hard?Whenever I try to make rings such as these mine always turn out too soft and bendy still. Is there a way to harden them? It had been suggested to work harden them by hammering the wire but I have not found this to be efffective.
+M K sorry about my late reply. To be honest, I dont remember the size of the wire I used. The wire I used was soft but it hardened whrn it was twisted abd it will soften again when you solder it together. After geting it on rhe ring mandrel and hammering it with a rawhide hammer the ring will harden up. You can also heat treat the ring to harden it, you will have to look up the times and temps but i think its around 500°f to 550° but to be 100% sure look up temps for hardening silver.

+Anuradha John If you would like to you can but I would have to make you a new one seeing this ring has already been sold. You can send me an email at gomeow.art@gmail.com and we can work out a deal. :)
Well, I don't remember what I used in this video but after watching it again and doing some math based on the numbers I gave it this videos it looks like I used 16 ga (1.30mm). Also I looked into my order history and it looks like it matches up with those numbers. I hope I was able to help you with this. 😀
@@GomeowCreations it's a sunflower and getting all of the petals cut of a similar size is difficult. Since commenting I cut out one that looks good but I'm doing a second smaller one to make it layered. I made some cutouts earlier and wanted to texture them too but it came out awful
@@GomeowCreations I didnt think of that, I appreciate the advice thank you. It could be a little difficult since I have a pattern I glue to the silver and then follow it as a guide but texturing the back should work fine too. When you solder you want the solder joint aka the 2 parts your are going to stick together to be as close as you can get them to being flat. So sanding it flat will help.
+maritimer Man thank you. Yeah, normaly I would take more time with buffing and do a better job at hiding the solder joint. Recording the video makes it a lot harder to see what I'm doing and I have yo word around the camera. I will try to get better working around this. :)

This is a question I get a lot as of late. 3.14 is pi aka a circle. So that is what you use it. 😁👍 3.14 works for any size ring you are making.

With small stuff like that you can add textures before cutting it out so you can keep the shape you want.

You can technically make it in whatever metal you want
DO NOT USE GLOVES when working with high speed rotary devices. Small strands of fabric can get caught and pull your hand into the rotating machine.
