This was the best game ever of Joe Ferguson (419 passing yards, 5 TD’s), the first game ever of Dan Marino and at the end Don Shula was smiling, He knew Dan Marino will become one of the greatest passers of all time.
Yes, this game was prophetic of both Dan Marino's unmatchable brilliance as the best QB of all time, and the next two decades of Miami's incomprehensibly horrid defense. The mantra of the announcer whenever Buffalo was on defense was "no pressure at all" and "Ferguson has all day." Sad to think of what the team wasted with Marino.
More than the lack of a running attack, it was the lack of defense in all Dan Marino’s career that prevented the team to win a championship. Drafting poorly and over the hill free agents in defense , plus bad defensive coordinators, made that unit a liability that was too much to overcome. The offense had to score 35 or more points and sometimes that was not enough. Against good teams you need some balance.
They had their share of great kicks...Von Shaken kicking 3 field goals in SB 19...Stoyo winning pts of games against Dallas, Philadelphia, and New York Jets..
@Dicky Jones I have read a few Dolphin biographies and one of them mentioned when Kooch was a rookie in Shula's first training camp he wanted to cut him and kept finding faults with him but Monte Clark (OL coach) told Shula No let's keep him I can bring him around, I think he will be alright...shula let him stay but told Monte, alright but I don't want to hear his name again (meaning no more mistakes). Good decision.

The bills have won the overtime game today here in the Orange Bowl for the first time since 1966....what parallel universe did we shift from after that statement....?
Things changed so much from when Shula saw how speed was the future and he started Mercury Morris over Jim Kiick, to this offense. He had built the Dolphins in the image of Lombardi's Packers and succeeded. Now, he would try to "throw the damn ball." More exciting, but less effective for Miami.
I think had David Overstreet not died, we would have had a very balanced offense for at least 84, 85 and 86. Certainly Super Bowl 19 would not have been a lopsided game.
Just to explain the above-in Dan's 3 championship game losses he had 4 TD's BUT 6 INT's, a Comp.% of UNDER 50%, an avg. Passer Rating of UNDER 60, and he led our offense to an avg. of only 12 p.p.g. How can a team win championships when their QB is playing like that ??

@@saracarlos1 Jay Brophy, Eric Kumerow and John Bosa, just some of the 1st round busts in the 80s for the Dolphins.
We really lost a lot of big games because of Von Shamann. San Diego playoff game comes to mind.

Oy Vey! Von Schamann?
Kuchenberg (LG) was doing double duty as the long snapper...another telling bit at just how talented Kuch was...he should be in the Hall.

The game when Woodley must've realized it was all over for him as Miami QB
David Woodley was my favourite player as a kid. RIP.
@@kevinriley2261 me too. I met him on the set of the Dan Marino Show in 1989. I told him he was my favorite player. May he RIP.

I suspect he was figuring that one out in the third game against the Raiders.
Remember this game..losing and feeling like we won #13
Me too ... I probably was 14 or so. Listening to AM radio because many Dolphin games were blacked out on local TV.

Uwe Von Schammen was TERRIBLE, even for the low standards of those days. The inspiration for Ray Finkle.
UVS wasn't a very nice person either.
First time Buffalo beat Miami in Miami since '66.
we want Woodley! right.
Yeah, that comment didn't age very well.
@GIL Favor a qb can only do so much .. look what just happened to mahomes .. the nfl's golden boy .. it's a team effort
I was there
If only we had known the trouble Marino would have playing in our and his biggest games-championship games in the playoffs.
