My father was a civil engineer and spoke about unsafe highway designs ......no shoulders, no lanes leading to exits, exits making drivers "crossover" to get off, with entrances at the same place to oncoming traffic. Chicago highways are known for that as I noticed how these constructions caused juggernauts, back ups and accidents. Yea, certain contractors get these big money jobs from cities and states, they cut corners and put drivers at risk for their faulty designs !!

The first thing I noticed was the amount of big rigs driving with motorists, surely their is a safer option. No wide shoulders for emergency stopping or emergency lanes [Designed for Emergency Vehicles Only Minutes save lives] Automated Speed signs these change the speed limit to reflect road conditions eg, Weather, Congestion, Accidents. These are monitored from a central control room also used by law enforcement when tracking criminals. Lead cars these are road vehicles that drive up and down busy major freeways to help slow the traffic down and can be used to push vehicles that break down of to the shoulder where break down crews can assist, this keeps the traffic flowing, people don't get out to push the car of the road putting lives at risk. Although this will not prevent all accidents it will reduce the severity and frequency in my opinion based on data where these practices/designs are in place.

Major wrecks are weekly occurrence in this spot. This is the first time a pile up this big has ever happened. And yes, the ice played a part in making it as huge as it was. @@ashleyhanson1150 It would be a sort of nightmare to be driving on a crowded highway and to become aware that the traction is deteriorating due to rain beginning to freeze rapidly or the surface becoming coated with a layer of snow (that isn't as bad as the icing rain however partially because it is so much more obvious)
if you slow to a more prudent speed you still have the traffic rushing up -Road Rage!- and around or possibly hitting you from behind-the best thing would absolutely to get off of that thing as soon as an exit comes up if you get the chance--
actually if at all possible stay off the road, don't go to work if you can help it-even if the road is adequately salted the salt flies through the air as aerosol brine droplets going in to every crevice and cranny of your car and attacking the metal-and I believe salt aerosol going through your heater system is the main cause of cars developing leaking heater cores after a few years on the road, modern cars make it very hard to access and replace the heater cores in most cases (old cars was a simple job)

texas doesn't get snow and ice very often - drivers know when it ices up to stay home or go slow. No one has 4x4s, the whole city has relatively few snow plows and it makes sense. Do you think Hawaii should have maintenance trucks for snow as well?

Whether there are shoulders and exits or not, there was forewarning of the weather. I think most of the people involved weren’t doing anything wrong and anyone that knows how it is trying to stop and/or navigate a vehicle on ice, most people were victims.
What I find astounding is how much damage was done after the initial pileup. Clear visibility, known icy roads, clearly a massive amount of emergency vehicles already responding with lights flashing. People should’ve been going extremely slow in perfect weather let alone in icy conditions, instead of waiting to brake until it was too late.
Again, I don’t think most of the people were guilty of this. But the ones that were caused so much tragedy.
And NEVER stay in your car after a pileup. EVER. RUN.

The roadway has always been elevated on this portion of 35W and never has there been an incident like this until now. There is a lot more that contributed to this that needs to be considered and investigated than just the road.

say what you want to say. flash freezing is unpreventable and a few cars will wreck regardless... then, you have no escape path if youre behind them. that is a flaw of the road. do i think some cell phones/speeding-semis/speeding-cars? absolutely. however, there seem to be factors that would have allowed this to be less tragic that lay on the feet of the people who built this road.
i put to much effort into this. the city/private company better have lawyers already working on this, because lawsuits are going to be inevitable...some of those big name truck lines are going to likely need some legal too.. i saw video of a fed ex truck that had to be going over the limit and smashed a line of cars. a lot of legal time is going to be spent on this for sure.

You wanted toll money so you put concrete barriers up surrounding the toll lanes...the crash was in the toll lanes, not the no toll lanes. Those vehicles within those toll lane concrete barriers had no "out"...no shoulder, no ditch, no nothing. You created the perfect storm...winter or summer. Picture summer, 100*, someone's car just stops in those toll lanes, no place to pull off...can anyone hear the multi chain pileup at 75mph because of that??? Should have closed those toll lanes both direction in bad weather and made everyone drive in the non toll SLOWER SPEED lanes... But hey, you collected toll from each and every one of them...right.

Not only that but they should not let 18 wheelers drive on the express lane. It should be for cars and pickup trucks. I drive the express lane when I’m in Fort Worth when I drive for Uber. And let me tell you these trucks drive slow in the express lane, some people don’t even drive the speed limit always on a hurry or under the speed limit. No more 18 wheelers should be allowed at all.

Semis need to fill contracts in a timely fashion which is why they go at highway speeds even on ice, of course they are slowed down for the ice weight and speed hate each other. That’s kind of how ice works, plus they are most likely from south of Iowa so they don’t know how to properly deal with ice while staying at top speed (just get snow tires)

People are going to drive fast to all the comments below about people slowing down I would bet not one of them obeys the typical 55 mile an hour speed limit faithfully. But how do you build a highway with no shoulder? That's just idiotic. You're just asking for trouble. To me that's the larger issue.

I used to live in Dallas and Fort Worth & let me tell you it's the people that move in from other states that get snow, they think they can drive the regular speed limit on the roads that look like they're wet when it is actually the black ice. And that's what causes these accidents.

It must be said... I lived in Texas for over 3 years. I’ve driven all over the United States and Texas has some of the most aggressive, rude and frightening drivers that I’ve experienced. They follow right up on other driver’s bumpers and cut people off ALL the time. They drive horrifically aggressive. They do not leave space between cars, especially in bad weather. They drive fast and inconsiderate. This is why there was a pile up... no distance to stop. They drive ver selfishly. The semi trucks are also dangerous that drive thru Texas and I witnessed many times truck drivers swerving on the highways in Texas and cutting cars off or driving up right on other’s bumpers. This disaster had a lot to do with the drivers!!!! Texas needs to require a driving manners course and driving safety to renew licenses in Texas. The overwhelming rude drivers and dangerous nature of driving in Texas was a major reason that I moved to Oklahoma!
