      Lectures like this are so needed like the swami years ago at the United Nations for many consecutive years offering a calm center for politicians world wide immediately comes to mind - so this public science presentation takes psychology neuroscience and philosophy and experience of the transcendent into the vanguard of the marketplace and public discourse - There are very few multi dimensional thinkers lecturing - we used to call them metaphysicians ( Dr. Philip McShane calls them meta-metaphysicians ) So this talk was a wonderful example of theory and practice coming together thank you so very much for the presentation

      🐟 02. A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF “LIFE”:
      Everything, both perceptible and imperceptible - that is, any gross or subtle OBJECT within the material universe which can ever be perceived with the cognitive faculties, plus the SUBJECT (the observer of all phenomena) - is to what most persons generally refer when they use the term “God”, since they usually conceive of the Primeval Creator as being the Perfect Person, and “God” (capitalized) is a personal epithet of the Unconditioned Absolute. However, this anthropomorphized conception of The Absolute is a fictional character of divers mythologies.
      According to most every enlightened sage in the history of this planet, Ultimate Reality is, far more logically, Absolutely NOTHING, or conversely, Absolutely EVERYTHING - otherwise called “The Tao”, “The Great Spirit”, “Brahman”, “Pure Consciousness”, “Eternal Awareness”, “Independent Existence”, “The Ground of All Being”, “Uncaused Nature”, “The Undifferentiated Substratum of Reality”, “The Unified Field”, et cetera - yet, as alluded to above, inaccurately referred to as a personal deity by the masses (e.g. “God”, “Allah”, “Yahweh”, “Bhagavan”, etc.).
      In other words, rather than the Supreme Truth being a separate, Blissful, Supra-Conscious Being (The Godhead Himself or The Goddess), Ultimate Reality is Eternal-Existence Limitless-Awareness Unconditional-Peace ITSELF. That which can be perceived, can not be perceiving!
      Because the Unmanifested Absolute is infinite creative potentiality, “it” actualizes as EVERYTHING, in the form of ephemeral, cyclical universes. In the case of our particular universe, we reside in a cosmos consisting of space-time, matter and energy, without, of course, neglecting the most fundamental dimension of existence (i.e. conscious awareness - although, “it” is, being the subject, by literal definition, non-existent).
      Just as a knife cannot cut itself, nor the mind comprehend itself, nor the eyes see themselves, The Absolute cannot know Itself (or at least objectively EXPERIENCE Itself), and so, has manifested this phenomenal universe within Itself for the purpose of experiencing Itself, particularly through the lives of self-aware beings, such as we sophisticated humans. Therefore, this world of duality is really just a play of consciousness within Consciousness, in the same way that a dream is a person's sleeping narrative set within the life-story of an “awakened” individual.
      APPARENTLY, this phenomenal universe was created with the primal event (the so-called “Big Bang”), which started, supposedly, as a minute, slightly uneven ball of light, which in turn, was instigated, ultimately, by Extra-Temporal Supra-Consciousness. From that first deed, every motion or action that has ever occurred has been a direct (though, almost exclusively, an indirect) result of it.
      Just as all the extant energy in the universe was once contained within the inchoate singularity, Infinite Consciousness was NECESSARILY present at the beginning of the universe, and is in no way an epiphenomenon of a neural network. Discrete consciousness, on the other hand, is entirely dependent on the neurological faculty of individual animals (the more highly-evolved the species, the greater its cognitive abilities).
      “Sarvam khalvidam brahma” (a Sanskrit maxim from the “Chandogya Upanishad”, meaning “all this is indeed Brahman” or “everything is the Universal Self alone”). There is NAUGHT but Eternal Being, Conscious Awareness, Causeless Peace - and you are, quintessentially, that!
      This “Theory of Everything” can be more succinctly expressed by the mathematical equation: E=A͚ (Everything equates to Infinite Awareness).
      HUMANS are essentially this Eternally-Aware-Peace, acting through an extraordinarily-complex biological organism, comprised of the eight rudimentary elements - pseudo-ego (the assumed sense of self), intellect, mind, solids, liquids, gases, heat (fire), and ether (three-dimensional space). When one peers into a mirror, one doesn't normally mistake the reflected image to be one's real self, yet that is how we humans conventionally view our ever-mutating form. We are, rather, in a fundamental sense, that which witnesses all transitory appearances.
      Everything which can be presently perceived, both tangible and immaterial, including we human beings, is a culmination of that primary manifestation. That is the most accurate and rational explanation for “karma” - everything was preordained from the initial spark, and every action since has unfolded as it was predestined in ETERNITY, via an ever-forward-moving trajectory. The notion of retributive (“tit-for-tat”) karma is just that - an unverified notion. Likewise, the idea of a distinct, reincarnating “soul” or “spirit” is largely a fallacious belief.
      Whatever state in which we currently find ourselves, is the result of two factors - our genetic make-up at conception and our present-life conditioning (which may include mutating genetic code). Every choice ever made by every human and non-human animal was determined by those two factors ALONE. Therefore, free-will is purely illusory, despite what most believe. Chapter 11 insightfully demonstrates this truism.
      As a consequence of residing within this dualistic universe, we experience a lifelong series of fluctuating, transient pleasures and pains, which can take the form of physical, emotional, and/or financial pleasure or pain. Surprisingly to most, suffering and pain are NOT synonymous.
      Suffering is due to a false sense of personal agency - the belief that one is a separate, independent author of one’s thoughts, emotions, and deeds, and that, likewise, other persons are autonomous agents, with complete volition to act, think, and feel as they wish. Another way of stating the same concept is as follows: suffering is due to the intellect being unwilling to accept life as it manifests moment by moment.
      There are five SYMPTOMS of suffering, all of which are psychological in nature:
      1. Guilt
      2. Blame
      3. Pride
      4. Anxiety
      5. Regrets about the past and expectations for the future
      These types of suffering are the result of not properly understanding what was explained above - that life is a series of happenings and NOT caused by the individual living beings. No living creature, including Homo sapiens, has personal free-will. There is only the Universal, Divine Will at play, acting through every body, to which William Shakespeare famously alluded when he scribed “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”
      The human organism is essentially a biopsychological machine, comprised of the five gross material elements (which can be perceived with the five senses) and the three subtle material elements (the three levels of cognition, which consist of abstract thought objects), listed above.
      The ANTIDOTE to all mental anguish is to firstly discern pain from suffering, then to achieve complete relief from that miserable state of existence, by abandoning the erroneous belief in personal authorship, and abiding in the primordial sense of being (the unqualified “I am”, which is one's core identity). This is the very same peace which is experienced each night during the dreamless phase of the sleep cycle. This 'resting imperturbably as Flawless Awareness' can be practiced on a regular basis, until it is fully assimilated and integrated into one's life.
      Every person, from time immemorial, has been either intentionally or unwittingly seeking such causeless peace, most commonly by practicing one of the four systems of YOGA (religion) delineated in the sixteenth chapter of this work, or else in creating wealth and the acquisition of material possessions, or in psycho-physical pleasures. That peace of mind is often referred to as “happiness”, “joy”, or “love”, and often presumed to be a temporal state, since many assume, incorrectly, that continuous peace is unavailable in this life.
      Fortunately, that is not the case - it is eminently possible to live one's life acquainted with unbroken peace of mind, if destined.
      Following DHARMA (frameworks of authentic religion and societal duties) is not guaranteed to achieve that desired tranquillity of mind, but even so, it is beneficial for individuals, since it establishes a structure which enables one to more easily elevate oneself beyond the mundane, animalistic platform (i.e. the base pursuits of eating, sleeping and mating). Intrinsic to dharma is the division of the adult male population into the four classes of society and the inherent role of girls and women in society, as fully elucidated in latter chapters of this Holy Scripture.

      I am currently on pause in my MS program at a too US university for very similar reasons. I would not associate “spirituality” with my reasons however-I would just say that I came to the realization that students are not graded on knowledge, ability, or effort-they are graded on how well they do what they’re told. In retrospect this makes perfect sense, because they are expected to work in corporate institutions, which of course value workers who excel at successfully completing sometimes complex tasks without questioning the value of that work on society as a whole.
      Good students and employees are expected not to ask “why?” but to ask “how high?” when the professor or the boss tells them to jump.

    the idea that consciousness exists at the smallest, most fundamental, reduced level of physics is quite an assumption. It is just as likely to be an emergent property only visible at the systems level, i.e. a property the comes from the connections between parts of the brain. For instance, you wouldn't say Microsoft Word truly 'exists' at the level of a computer's hardware, since it appears the same whether on a mac or pc, but that it emerges from computer code as a higher level, abstract idea.

    • @evetsnitram8866
      @evetsnitram8866 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting analogy. Microsoft Word is really a computer program. Programs or apps are a manipulation of computer assembly language, even the operating system is an elaborate program. Anyway, without programs a computer is sort of in suspended animation awaiting instruction. Its said that consciousness brings everything into being including us. I find it interesting that we are microscopic specs on another microscopic spec called Earth and we are actually aware of where we are and some contemplate it in scientific detail.

    i find it quite amazing that scientist who are studying consciousness have come to the conclusion that the mind is a powerful tool and has a major effect on reality around us just as the spiritual world has always known. scientist have no where else to go when they realize that human observation has an effect on experiments. you have people sitting next to machines that average at 0, but when you put a human next to it and tell them to use their mind to change the outcome, it has a a huge impact on that outcome. with no human next to it it will average out indefinitley, the graphs dont lie. human consciousness is powerful. science teahces us that reality as we see it is just an illusion. were in fact finding out that our senses have mislead us. upon closer inspection we realize that reality isnt what we thought it was, and its so much more amazing than we could have ever thought.

    Understanding quantum physics is Understanding ONESELF, i.e., PURE or ABSOLUTE CONSCIOUSNESS. This understanding cannot come from research into the physical (phenomenal) world. It is more an internal journey. One has to turn inwards. It involves a great deal of saadhana (practice).
    Here is one sample Mantra from Kenopanishad (II:3): "यस्यामतं तस्य मतं मतं यस्य न वेद सः। अविज्ञातं विजानतां विज्ञातमविजानताम्॥ (yasyaamatam tasya matam, matam yasya na veda sah; avijnaatam vijaanataam, vijnaatamavijaanataam). "It is known to him to whom It is unknown; he, to whom It is known, does not know It. It is unknown to those who know, and known to those who know not." That is why Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle is also known as the EQUATION OF MAYA.

Have you discovered something on your own away from learned stuff? using your senses to feed the brain that configurates the information and projects it to your conscious realization? like a new point of view of your own, without any interference and interaction of influenced material? why do a white man think white, a black man think black, a brown man think brown, and so on?

It is not wise to assume we are an intelligent species before we reach that goal. Someday when we realize that we live on a perfect planet, we will then realize that we are still in the early stages of evolution. The main tool in reaching enlightenment is in the phrase "Do no harm" It helps you realize that our genetic reflexes are driven by a survival of the fittest mechanism. If creativity is important to you, try stepping out evolution by doing no harm to anything for a day.

      No need to introduce magic in this basic biological ability.

    • @mike-0451

      @@nickolasgaspar9660 I don’t think that’s what he’s saying. “magic” is not a violation of science so much as it is a violation of we know, which is to say that magic is simply something we can’t explain.
      I don’t think what you call “magic” is even possible to imagine. A man pulling a rabbit out of a hat is not a violation of the laws of the universe. You understand that you *shouldn’t* be able to pull a rabbit out of a hat, but there is still a rabbit, and there is still a hat. If he were to pull a E̷͔̩̳̱̦̣̟͋͝l̴͎̯̳̞̤̟̮͘ͅd̶͔͖̫̥̥̖͐̊͒̐̄̉͗͆̉ŗ̵̛̠̜͙̟̻̥̮͊̋̽̌̈́͆͑ï̴̢̢̞̫̠͜͜͠͠t̵͎̔̈́͌̋͒c̸̡̢̨̝̣̹̬̞̮̫͛h̷̨̫̆́̀͗̅ ̵̩̈́́̑́͊̈̔̊͜͠ȁ̸̡̻̻̙̯̤̼͈̠̆̌͛b̶̻͇̣̱̮̼̔̑͊̃͛͒͌̍̑̕ͅó̸̪͎̲̖m̷̹̞̞̜̺̻̜̑̋̽̈́́ĩ̵̛͉̫͇̱͍̣̍̀̎ń̷͉̈́a̵̤̖̲̗͉̝͑͗͘t̴̨͚̱̝̱̝̻̜̠̄͆̕͠ǐ̶̘̹̑̔̔̈́͗͋̈́̒͝ò̷̡̹̙̲͈̜͎̩̋̚ǹ̴̝͇̙͍͙̠̤̰̊̑̑̀͊ ̷̎͋̅͋͜
      Then that would certainly be magic, because such a thing literally is not decribable. You couldn’t even give it a name except “unknown”. There is no pedestal or foundation you can look back to to understand it.
      But what we actually call “magic” occurs within the laws of the universe. For example, reversing gravity may not be what we expect, but we are still simply dealing with gravity, and now it is simply reversed. Knowing this, you can simply assume that everything will now fall upwards. See, the structure of reality is the same.
      Now, assuming that there is nothing beyond the chemical reactions is to forsake even calling consciousness a “biological ability”. “Ability” itself is an abstract concept. Where does the equation to describe the meaning of “ability” exist?
      It doesn’t make any logical sense to deny the transcendent itself. You may disagree on religion, but the transcendent doesn’t just go away because you don’t believe it. In the same way, you may make a semantic argument that air is not material. In the same way that you define consciousness as a “biological ability”, I may say that air is simply an illusion of the primate brain that requires a consistent mold to fit its own pattern into, therefore, everything that we think we know does not actually exist (or some nonsense like that, could’ve worded it better but this is TH-cam) however, throw this man off a cliff and let him feel the air against his face, and then he will say “you were right”.

      -" “magic” is not a violation of science so much as it is a violation of we know, which is to say that magic is simply something we can’t explain. "
      -Sure, its only a violation of reason or epistemically dishonest.
      "Magic did it"(magical entity/substance as a causal agent) is a intellectually lazy way to pretend we understand the ontology of a phenomenon.
      So as you said , making up magical substances doesn't really explain anything. "Consciousness" in this presentation frame is nothing more than what Phlogiston or Miasma or Orgone energy were for our epistemology....made up artifacts that conveniently happen to "channel" the properties displayed by the observable phenomenon.
      So this magical approach ( attributing the properties of process/phenomenon to invisible enties/substances) is in direct conflict with the current scientific paradigm which states that Advances properties( chemical, molecular, biological etc) are the emergent properties of complex structures of matter....NOT fundamental properties in addition to matter.
      -"I don’t think what you call “magic” is even possible to imagine. A man pulling a rabbit out of a hat is not a violation of the laws of the universe. You understand that you shouldn’t be able to pull a rabbit out of a hat, but there is still a rabbit, and there is still a hat.
      -I think I explained extensively the "magic" in the QM perspective on consciousness. QM deals with fundamental elements of matter and their kinetic properties.
      IN order to observe more advanced properties(as I said above) you will need to look in larger structures of matter(molecules, biological systems etc).
      -"Now, assuming that there is nothing beyond the chemical reactions is to forsake even calling consciousness a “biological ability”.
      -I am not sure you understand the current establish scientific paradigm(product of the last 2000years) or the science behind Mind properties and brain states.
      I don't have to "assume" anything (or nothing) beyond the observable mechanisms of the brain. First of all ...its not my burden. I am not the one making claims about an invisible ontology.
      Second....and most importantly, in science we don't assume nothing about an invisible ontology, but we offer descriptions on observable causal mechanisms.
      What we do is establish Strong Correlations between a phenomenon and a Necessary and Sufficient Causal Mechanism.
      -"“Ability” itself is an abstract concept. Where does the equation to describe the meaning of “ability” exist? ""
      -Sure....how is this comment is relevant to the unscientific speculation of this lecture?
      -"It doesn’t make any logical sense to deny the transcendent itself."
      -Actually, there is a Logical rule called Null Hypothesis that specifically demands the rejection of all existential claims until evidence can falsify our initial rejection! The Null Hypothesis is how we identify a Default Position and keeps us from holding many conflicting positions OR using special pleading to justify our bias toward a specific one!
      Again, the burden is on the side making the extraordinary claim.I just reject unfounded claims. By rejecting a claim, that doesn't mean that I believe the claim is wrong. ("I don't accept X "DOESN'T mean " I think X i s wrong").
      -"You may disagree on religion, but the transcendent doesn’t just go away because you don’t believe it"
      -Again what we believe or not is irrelevant to its actual state. We don't even know if it is even possible! We don't have a way to evaluate it, so the only thing we can do is look at the evidence and see whether they provide any justification to believe in it.
      There is no evidence, so the belief in the transcendent is irrational (not wrong). You are just promoting an irrational belief and a bigger mystery as answer to a smaller one (mind properties).
      -"In the same way, you may make a semantic argument that air is not material."
      -That would be ignorant. Air is really low density matter.
      -"In the same way that you define consciousness as a “biological ability”,"
      -Its not my definition. Science defines all phenomena as "abilities" that matter has to produce advanced properties as the complexity of structures of matter rises. The same is true for hardness, liquidity, wetness,digestion, mitosis, combustion....why should we make up a magical substance for consciousness when we have can directly observe a necessary and sufficient mechanism?
      -" I may say that air is simply an illusion of the primate brain that requires a consistent mold to fit its own pattern into, "
      -good luck making something useful with that vague statement. At least our scientific understanding provides us with an accurate description of what we observe , testable predictions and technical applications!
      -"everything that we think we know does not actually exist (or some nonsense like that, could’ve worded it better but this is TH-cam) however, throw this man off a cliff and let him feel the air against his face, and then he will say “you were right”."
      -that sentence doesn't really make any sense. All that we know is through our interactions with what "exists"...and we can use a fan and use technical apparatus to analyze the particles that are pushed by its blades.....
      What is your point???

    Any concepts or ideas about Synesthesia actually being a basic level of perceiving in Samadhi ?

    • @LawsonEnglish
      @LawsonEnglish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the exact opposite:
      Samadhi is the process where perception of internal (mental/emotional) and external (sensory) objects reduces or completely ceases, even as the brain remains alert. The most common form is samadhi is simply the process called TM, while the final stage is simply the [occasional] endpoint of TM:
      *Samadhi with an object of attention takes the form of gross mental activity, then subtle mental activity, bliss and the state of amness.*
      -Yoga Sutras I.17
      Should the process complete itself, than all mental activity [apparently] ceases:
      *The other state, samadhi without object of attention, follows the repeated experience of cessation, though latent impressions [samskaras] remain.*
      THe process of TM is one of increasing inhibition of the thalamic activity that allows the brain to be aware of anything at all, even though the brain remains in an alert mode. Should that inhibition become full, not only does awareness cease, but as a side-effect, another part of the thalamus that helps regulate autonomic functioning also abruptly changes in its activity, so that heart rate and respiration also abruptly go lower. Some people even appear to stop breathing during the awareness-cessation state, and then equally abruptly, all such autonomic functions return to normal meditation levels at the same time that awareness-of activity in the thalamus resumes. This apparent breath suspension guided the earliest research on the state as it is impossible to miss (legend holds that the first lab tech who was present for such a state panicked and actually climbed on top of the meditator, attempting to perform CPR - their reaction when the meditator calmly opened their eyes and demanding to know what the lab tech thought he was doing, apparently almost resulted in another form of autonomic disruption in the lab tech, though he survived):

He is president of the Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in Fairfield, Iowa, and honorary chair of its board of trustees. The university was established in 1973 by the TM movement's founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, to deliver a "consciousness-based education".
    Hagelin graduated in physics in 1981, and began post-doctoral research at the CERN for less than a year, then at the SLAC. He vanished in 1983 in the midst of personal problems and reappeared a year later as physics professor at the Maharishi University of Management (MUM), then became its president. Hagelin believes that his extended version of unified field theory is identified with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's "𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨", 𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 "𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙".

Sadly there is not one and I sometimes think these guys are part of the problem because a lot of TMers think they know the truth just cause Maharishi told them. If you want agreement you need to interface with with the rest of the world, not go off in your own direction and claim special knowledge, especially about something like a definition. So interesting how "attached" some are to their ideas given the idea of "non-attachment"... LOL

And we have no clue of how the brain gives rise to conscious experience (synonyms: first-person experience, subjective experience, phenomenal experience). It seems that we can perfectly describe the brain from the third-person point of view, so have a complete physical and functional account for the brain and still gain no insight on what is called the "hard problem of consciousness", namely explaining conscious experience. Why everything is not just "in the dark" instead (sort of speak) ?

      The scientific community just isn't ready to come to grips with our minds yet. You even have people like Daniel Dennett that completely deny there is such a thing - he claims it's all an illusion. I can't help noticing, though, he doesn't say what it is that's experiencing that illusion.

    • @LawsonEnglish
      @LawsonEnglish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, but that's because there is no measurable evidence that he is right.
      The internal appreciation f reality that emerges is just what hagelin describes, however, so even though it is merely a brain state, it is still a very *interesting* brain state
      [As part of the studies on enlightenment and samadhi via TM](www.reddit.com/r/transcendental/comments/7djr03/a_bunch_of_research_on_tm_pure_consciousness_and/), researchers found 17 subjects (average meditation, etc experience 18,000 hours) who were reporting at least having a pure sense-of-self continuously for at least a year, and asked them to "describe yourself" ([see table 3 of psychological correlates study](sci-hub.do/10.1016/j.concog.2004.03.001)), and these were some of the responses:
      * _We ordinarily think my self as this age; this color of hair; these hobbies . . . my experience is that my Self is a lot larger than that. It's immeasurably vast. . . on a physical level. It is not just restricted to this physical environment_
      * _It's the ‘‘I am-ness.’’ It's my Being. There's just a channel underneath that's just underlying everything. It's my essence there and it just doesn't stop where I stop. . . by ‘‘I,’’ I mean this 5 ft. 2 person that moves around here and there_
      * _I look out and see this beautiful divine Intelligence. . . you could say in the sky, in the tree, but really being expressed through these things. . . and these are my Self_
      * _I experience myself as being without edges or content. . . beyond the universe. . . all-pervading, and being absolutely thrilled, absolutely delighted with every motion that my body makes. With everything that my eyes see, my ears hear, my nose smells. There's a delight in the sense that I am able to penetrate that. My consciousness, my intelligence pervades everything I see, feel and think_
      * _When I say ’’I’’ that's the Self. There's a quality that is so pervasive about the Self that I'm quite sure that the ‘‘I’’ is the same ‘‘I’’ as everyone else's ‘‘I.’’ Not in terms of what follows right after. I am tall, I am short, I am fat, I am this, I am that. But the ‘‘I’’ part. The ‘‘I am’’ part is the same ‘‘I am’’ for you and me_
      .:
      Tradition holds that when that state fully matures, one is able to directly decide what reality is, and so siddhis, such as perfected levitation, are manifest.
      However, unless and until one can "sit in the air" simply be deciding to do that, you are correct that no-one will take the more controversial claims about the state seriously.

      @@KipIngram...he means your brain is akin to an advanced carbon based computer, with network loops that cause us to have the "illusion" of consciousness. It makes more sense than mysticism. Just because we can't completely understand it scientifically doesn't mean it's magic in the supernatural sense. Humans are very bad at judging complex systems using common sense. Just because you don't believe it doesn't mean it isn't a perfectly logical theory.

    so this would mean that our consciousness exists in a timeless place that never ends, the release of DMT on death would force the consciousness to go into "the fourth" dimension, it actually makes sense having taken LSD and experienced timelessness and an affinity with everything in the universe and beyond, im going to try these techniques and hopefully find that amazing place once again.

    27:35 - Wait. I imagine it would be possible to express quantum mechanics without using complex numbers - you'd just use a pair of real numbers in a suitable way. I'm guessing complex numbers just "work in a way" that makes the expression simpler and cleaner (i.e., some things you'd have to manually specify without them becomes "automatic.")

    • @LawsonEnglish
      @LawsonEnglish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The rules of arithmetic of these pairs would simply be identical to that for complex numbers.
      That's actually how it is implemented in computer languages that have a complex number data type.
      E.G., in Squeak Smalltalk, the "*" symbol for the class Complex is:
      * anObject
      "Answer the result of multiplying the receiver by aNumber."
      | a b c d newReal newImaginary |
      anObject isComplex
      ifTrue:
      [a := self real.
      b := self imaginary.
      c := anObject real.
      d := anObject imaginary.
      newReal := (a * c) - (b * d).
      newImaginary := (a * d) + (b * c).
      ^ Complex real: newReal imaginary: newImaginary]
      ifFalse:
      [^ anObject adaptToComplex: self andSend: #*]
