+weekendroady Genesis and sport games when hand in hand. Also usually had the best version of sport games that came out on other consuls. Like the NHL series.
No one really talks about this game, but there's a lot to like, even if EA's series was better. Look at these big, human-proportioned sprites, the big detailed net, the jersey-grab during fights, etc. It feels a bit less smooth than EA's games, and way too many shots are just going into the opposing defensemen's shins. The way I used to score goals was basically to make a double-move and drive straight into the net. I had a full undefeated season as the New Jersey Devils, and #4 Scott Stevens scored the vast majority of my goals.
I recently picked up an old Genesis system. This game is fun, but it’s pretty hard to score. Almost never with a one timer, and most goals come from a player like Messier crashing the net after the first shot. Also the B button shot is more effective than slap shots or one timers. Having said that the AI will often give three goals on three consecutive shots to the computer player. But it is still a fun nostalgic experience.
Kind of amazing we had so many options for sports games back in the day. I think the Genesis had 5-6 diff. hockey franchises going at once...
