      I have a 38 Special, several 9mm's, a new 5.7mm and a pair of 1911s in 45ACP. And I just ordered a Magnum Research BFR in 45/70. Now which one do you think is more powerful.
      Also as far as your scientific test, well it definitely depends on just how high your bullet enters that container.

    Energy levels are similar, though the hotest 45 loads outperform the hottest 9mm loads in energy. The 45 shines with twice the projectile weight for greater momentum in penetration, it makes a bigger hole when projectiles fail to expand, and it makes a substantially larger permanent hole with expanding projectiles. Hole size is what contributes to stopping power…it’s about rapid blood loss when large internal organs are penetrated. .

      This is true. I'm more of a 45 Colt shooter, but to people who don't know, the versatility of 45 loads can vary wildly. They have some loads that even at 300 grains, rival the speeds of a +p 9mm at 115 grains. They actually generate similar pressure to 44mag when loaded that way. Really fun out of a Henry, but I probably wouldn't fire them out of any random handgun.

    Great video brother. I fall in the middle of this argument because with quality ammo 45 transfers more energy on meat targets but is it enough to sacrifice capacity? Prolly not

  • @SteveL1100
    @SteveL1100 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Both 9mm and .45 ACP are roughly equal in terms of energy foot pounds on paper, across most commonly available bullet styles. The difference between them lies in HOW they dump the energy they have into the target. Also what kind of target is being impacted. 9mm being slightly smaller in diameter, a bit faster in velocity, but half the mass of a .45 ACP (115 grains vs 230 grains) does a bit better against common barriers like wood, thin metals, and because of the hydrostatic displacement from having a few hundred more fps in velocity, is going to splash more water when fired into a liter bottle of soda. The .45 ACP otoh, makes a bigger hole (comparing FMJ) and plows through more SOFT tissue better than 9mm especially at longer distances. .45 ACP hardball is known to nearly penetrate two 15" gel blocks laid out end to end and, make more flex and wobble or jumping of the gelatin blocks from the table. Also being twice the mass as 9mm, the .45 ACP sheds velocity at lower RATE than 9mm. In short, .45 ACP is 90% as dangerous as 200 yards as it is from the muzzle in a non armored , soft tissue target.

      Garand Thumb makes great videos but he is not immune to being incorrect his test was quite flawed especially since Norma MHP .45 sucks while the 9mm is actually good the test would’ve been better with federal HST. Either way the .45 auto literally puts a bigger hole in you meaning you bleed out faster. The 9mm has more advantages mainly being price and similar size firearms in 9mm hold more ammo. But to say 9mm has comparable lethality to .45 is pure nonsense.

      @renegadephilosopher5996 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      That’s not true. People survive 45acp. Shot placement matters and a 45acp has less penetration and less kinetic energy over a longer distance. 9mm destroy a 45 in ballistics. 45 is a great subsonic round and will definitely get the job done, but we have to stop pretending that it is superior to the 9mm. It hasn’t been in a long time. That’s why most militaries have adopted the 9mm as a sidearm. It’s more effective, has more available to the market, cheaper ammo, more capacity, and better penetration. Stopping power is a myth. There is no reason to believe that a .45 does anything other than get to the target slower. I like .45acp. It’s a great round, but facts are facts.

    • @bmx7596
      @bmx7596 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      @@renegadephilosopher5996 Look up lucky gunner. Most of the 45 acp they tested penetrated above standards for terminal performance. Not only that, expansion(bigger hole) has a higher chance of touching vital structures. Ever hear gunshot victims talk about a bullet being a "half inch from my heart etc?" Yeah width matters, ALOT. Some of those 45acp were expanding to a full INCH. You do not see that with 9mm. The military adoption has more to do with being easier to shoot. A 10mm, 357 sig smokes a 9mm in every way, wanna take a guess as to why the military doesn't use it? Has nothing to do with performance.

    You'll notice that the reason there was less liquid dispersed is because the gravity of the 45acp force made the liquid stay closer to the target. Like when you drop a heavy rock into water and the liquid splashes up and then follows back down with gravity , this is similar from the force moving in that direction the liquid follows behind the bullet instead of dispersing away from it

      2.4mm isn't much of a difference. 9mm 115 grain at 1175 fps has more energy than 45acp. The 45 acp 230 grain going 800 fps has the same energy as a 32oz bottle of water going 70 mph in your car. I'd rather take more energy in a smaller, denser package, aka 9mm.

      @@Radvous2.4mm is a pretty big difference when we’re talking about a hole in you’re body! Also what kind of pure nonsense are we talking here a modern .45 230 grain round will move at 900 fps from a full size gun just like a 115 grain 9mm will get that 1175 fps from a full size gun…. The .45 auto would only get such pathetic speeds from a 3.5 inch barrel using very anemic target ammo… What’s with 9mm guys always comparing 9mm in the most favorable situations to the most anemic .45 auto! Not to mention we’re acting like 185 or 200 grain does not exist in .45 which will go faster and deliver more energy. Just an absolutely ridiculous comment you decided to type up. I carry a 9mm for its advantages over .45 mainly being price and greater capacity in similarly sized weapons. But to act like 9mm will have the lethality of a .45 is absolutely ridiculous

    Look up "Taylor KO Factor". According to Taylor's math, the 9mm NATO round is a 7.2 KO. The .45 ACP is 12.6 KO. For reference, the 10mm is a little over 13.

    45 has more energy, but it's super weird to stretch out to a distance. 50 yards you're aiming well above the target lobbing em in there. I'd rather have 9mm where I can hit out to 100 without just guessing at my point of aim. It's got enough energy to stop whatever threat might come my way.

    • @bdub0983
      @bdub0983 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Scupplin right, but realistically you have no idea what distance you might have to engage from. Remember the Elijah Dicken? 40 yards, 10 shots 8 hits with a Glock 19. Stopped a mass shooter. So sometimes you might have to engage at those ranges. If you're out walking through the mall, you don't have another gun to get back to. Your concealed carry is what you've got. Use it and stop the guy or run, your call.
      Really I prefer 9 because the energy difference isn't that great, 9 expands better usually (speed equals expansion) and it allows for far more capacity. But also, I can make hits reliably out to 50 if I had to.

    45acp is slower than 9mm and will dump more energy, but pistol velocity generally doesn’t get too high so at that point it’s about putting holes in your target not the size of the hole. Rifles that have a higher velocity is where you get better ballistics so projectile size and grain will play a factor, not so much with handguns which is why 9mm is the logical choice for EDC

    For layman's purposes, and to not sound like a meatrider, heres my two cents. 9mm is usually a more concealable platform, with more portability, capacity, and accuracy, less bullet drop at distance (though why on earth a human should need to use 9mm for anything other than threats or meals between 5-25 yards away, after 25 yards gets to where the threat isnt really a threat unless they are actovely peppering you with bullets. .45 is an iffy caliber for me because i dont understand personally whats the point of having a little more power, way less ammo, a heavier platform which will wear you down faster, and you inevitably may not be able to find plentiful ammo because so many gods caliber people bought most of it first, or they wasted all their ammo practicing to get good with a bullet thats gonna drop nearly 3 inches before it hits 25 yards, vs a bullet that drops the same after 100 yards or greater. All in all, i dont wanna get shot by either, or any bullet. But i trust 9mm over 45 every day of the year

    There really isnt a " power difference " in 9mm and 45 acp in standard pressure loads.
    Now that changes a little bit when you get a good 45 +p load.. then a good 45+p will usually edge out all but the most powerful of +p+ 9mm loads.
    The 45 gained its reputation from the old loads. Where 9mm vs 45 was almost always standard pressure full metal jacket. The 45 shined here because, well, its a .45" vs a 3.5"
    (Ish) bullet.
    9mm closed this gap with higher pressures, and modern expanding bullet design.. but make no mistake, a 45acp is a bettwr anti personell round than 9mm assuming it performs correct
    45acp hst gets 14 or 15 " of penetration with damn near 3/4" of expansion. Vs the same round in 9mm gets similar penetration but 1/2" expansion.

In close quarters. .45 acp is the dominant round it hold more mass with more stopping power. At further ranged targets. When we don't use our pistols anymore. The 5.56x45 is a more accurate, flatter shooting projectile. Rather than is more massive competitor round 7.62x39. At mid-long range accurate rounds down range are crucial. That's why we like. 45 for side arms and 5.56 for longer range.

    This is so hard to compare. Sometimes a 9mm will penetrate more, but a 45 will go through tough items easier, like thin metal. A 45 dumps more energy into the target. A 9mm gives you more capacity and better recoil which leads to better shot placement. The smaller guns like the p365 is a plus as well. The 45 is much better up close and the 9mm is better when you go past 100 yards. If you want the best of both worlds, get a 10mm or a 45 super.
