the word 今 is pronounced using the kun'yomi reading「いま」(as are most single-kanji words, i think). the kanji 今 in words like 今月 (こんげつ) or 今週 (こんしゅう）uses an *on'yomi* reading of the kanji- 「こん」. (although in many words, 今 uses neither こん nor いま, like 今日・きょう, 今年・ことし, 今朝・けさ). pretty much all kanji work like this. i would definitely suggest looking into on'yomi vs. kun'yomi readings for kanji! there are some basic rules (with exceptions...) that will make reading kanji so much easier. (disclaimer: i am in no way an expert, i am repeating what my teachers have told me)
