To Scott’s question, Gemrate is actually working on creating a universal pop report. I talked to this in a video a few weeks ago. Seems very cool and can’t wait to see it
“Junk slabs” have more value than junk wax. I like junk slabs. I buy them for below grading value of my favorite players . It’s better than collecting raw cards.
BGS 10 and of course the black label is still king, but even the BGS 9.5 prices are still around the same price as the SGC 9.5. Beckett is no way lower then CGC/CSG(and even SGC), so I am not sure what the person @3:14 is talking about.
Thanks for answering my question, Chris. Hopefully the hobby will be fine; in a healthy spot in 5 years, what that looks like; we will see but yeah. Thanks again.
As a dealer I 100 % agree with what you said about selling cards in front of the dealer. Take it outside. Dealers do pay to set up at shows. One of my pet peeves.
I love cards. They have been my life for the last 2 1/2 years. It's something my Mom, uncles, brother, cousins, and I did when we were kids. Lost my mom 3 years ago. I shut down my business 2 years ago, after 14 years of not having spare time or being left alone I am loving having a hobby again. I started giving two guys a ride to work every week, they are throwing me 80 bucks, then I pitch in 20. That's 400 bucks a month I plan on using on cards. I plan on buying a card a month. I like the investing part. I started a year ago and have about 20 awesome cards. Most are low pop high grade or pop 1. When people see my collection I want to be the only one to have it.
Another great Q+A! Your answer about attendee deals happening at shows was your first answer to ever surprise me. I thought you would be fine with it if they did the deal away from the dealers.
As a store owner from 1989 to 2007, there have been bad apples, sure, but nothing compared to today. The Internet has been a game changer in people commiting fraud and it's far more prevelant (especially in autographs) today and there is no fear whatsover of any punishment.
Dig these Q+A vids. Super edifying. Also, that’s awesome that sorting cards feels like a meditation for you. That’s how you know you’re in the right place. I remember hearing Charles Bukowski say that he’d pay to be able to write. That was obviously his meditation :)
I’m in FB group baseball cards of the 1960s and 1970s, just collectors with cards, no buying or selling allowed. Some good info on vintage and some do trades.
REALLY ENJOYED YOUR ANSWER TO THE POWERBALL QUESTION. LOVE YOUR VIDS AND THE WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE FOR SPORT COLLECTING IN GENERAL. 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
When it comes to graded ticket stubs for significant games, now that everything is ticketless, would you think that would increase the older values or make the new generation not care as much as they've never held a ticket? For example, I was at Framber's no-no for the Astros a couple months ago but other than a screenshot of my seat geek, I have nothing to remember it with.
Thanks for doing the Q&As, Chris! I liked your answer on bad apples/actors being around any industry and not just in recent times. I like the question on buying from roaming sellers at card shows. I haven't done that, but have bought cards within minutes of a dealer buying them from a "traveling" seller and still getting a nice price with the table dealer getting a small percentage.
Chris, would you classify yourself as a more conservative investor/dealer? When you hold a card for too long and it goes down by 35-40% . How do you deal with it Or when you sell a card and than it goes up 35-40%? Is it as easy as saying, "Just don't look back:? Can these losses be a tax write-off?
Although I think the current situation of over producing cards is similar to the junk wax era, I believe the education level of most card buyers is SO much higher these days. Even kids who start collecting now would very quickly find out about getting cards graded, pop counts, completed sales etc. I think the hobby is in a much more stable place than it was in the late 90’s. I don’t blame anyone/myself for what happened at the end of the junk wax era. We had no experience with dealing with that situation and most of us were kids! I just think it’s a lot less likely to happen again like that.
I find the price difference in PSA 9 and 10 rather confusing. Especially when the pop count between the two grades, is not 5 or 10 X. Yes, I definitely think as a buyer, the 9 grade makes sense and, for fraction of the price too.
I bought many vintage sets complete. I have then gone through the process of upgrading. For example, I have a 58 Topps set that has a fair to VG Mantle and Maris. I later upgraded those cards to PSA 6 (as well as many of the other stars in the set). Raw commons were upgraded to be at least EX. When it comes to liquidating, is it better to sell with the slabbed upgrades as a complete set, or would it be better to sell the set its lower grade version and sell the upgraded singles separately?
I have a question for you, Chris. Have you ever considered hiring help to sell, package, and list your cards? At what point does it make sense financially to have an employee do that? Im sure trust, cost, etc are factors, but I wonder if you could gain productivity in doing the enjoyable parts of your business more.
Chris how can I contact you? I found a mid seventies price guide from a dealer and what they were charging and selling. Baseball, basketball, hockey, tobacco cards, Topps, Bowman’s, might make for an interesting video. This was mine and completely forgot about it. Your channel is by far my favorite and thought you might be interested.

Re Bad Apples . When I was a kid I would buy 1989 Donruss packs from my local card shop . I could never pull a Griffey Jr . Turns out the owner was searching the packs and re-sealing them . What a POS .
@@bmoreinvestor5900 Not nearly as much as I been taking after your momma, chump. But look, this for hobby. Not your crippled politics. Wanna bet that our host might agree?

Great segment as always! You are the hobby's best example of knowledge and honesty.
Thanks for taking my question. The BGS fall seems sudden but I guessed I’ve been missing it happen until now.

9:45 I’ve been only buying vintage for 7 years. So far, it feels better. And I don’t generate any 5000 count junk wax filled furniture either.😂
Thanks for all the great info, Chris! I love your videos and really look forward to them. Keep up the good work!
The 1974 set has A LOT of variations-if your friend is doing a master set, make sure he researches well!

Good information and always entertaining. Great seeing you at the Chantilly show.
Chris, have you done a video on your best (most profitable) & worst (lost most,$) card sale/ transactions?

I used to have employees manage a lot of that for me (from 2015-2018 or so). I might do that again.
Swear I saw you in Annapolis today. Hope you had fun if it was you.
I was there! Had a nice outing with the fam.
One thing I haven’t heard you talk about is buying unopened boxes/packs. Have you come across collections with unopened hobby boxes?
Yeah although not often with any valuable ones. I essentially never open boxes/packs myself.

Is it still possible to add questions for part2?
I've already finished part 2 but I will do another Q&A in a month or so

Great Video as always you should now update the mantle baby with an 8yr old holding one of those Cal Ripken Orange minor league rookie card. 😎

I had a similar experience with 1987 Donruss!
TAG is superior to PSA. Can't wait til the masses figure that out. PSA kinda sucks if we're being honest. Way too subjective and inconsistent.
