Interesting. When I moved to Nashville in '82, I ended up working for a guy who had bought the rights to manufacture plate reverbs that were designed by Gene Lawson (of Lawson Microphones). We wound our own transducers and they were screwed to the plate. Our pickups were piezo, but they were about 5/8" by 1/8"; I can't remember how we mounted them. The plate was about 3'x7'. Our damper was made from square aluminum and we used fiberglass ceiling tiles as the damping material. It was attached with a piano hinge on the bottom and the top had a knob that screwed down so you could move it to adjust the amount of reverb. I know we had those plate reverbs in studios in Nashville, Dallas, and Miami.

I guess, but for dummies like me that want the "real thing", this is a great solution! I've been on this for over a year, trying to find a method that actually seemed realistic.

The more I learn about the origins of many classic effects, the more I’m interested in either tracking down the vintage or making my own! The difference from plugins is a subtle one, but it seems to me with the physical units you can get a more organic, unpredictable result!

Before the video starts I had a dream last night about using a gong as a plate reverb, I have a nickel small plate I built in the early 2000s but I found a huge 40 inch Gong cymbal at a pawn shop in Kingsport Tn that has just been sitting on the shelf for 2 years. So I came to youtube to see if anyone had tried this, well because its the internet someone did. so with some springs to hold it in place and a dampener I now have an idea!! THANKS!

_Very_ cool! I'd say this particular plate reverb is better suited for the synths, Rhodes, vocals and similar instruments more so than drums but it did sound good on the snare. Still very, very cool.

ok really cool idea. Strangely enough I have everything to do this project as i have been messing about with DML speaker mini guitar amp..basically a small guitar amp that has a rectangle of foam as a speaker...actually works, but extremely underwhelming unless you like no bass frequencies at all lol. just wondering about the daw side of things with the plate reverb..geussing could use an insert on the back of my audio interface with a splitter (TRS on one end going into insert on interface and on the other end of that cable the split ends would be 2 x TS unbalanced..Tip going into the amp and Sleeve coming out of the piezo) then use an insert plugin vst in the daw to compensate for latency?? I would wire a mono jack plug to the piezo.

Put the signal on cymbal one, which rubs against cymbal 2, which rubs against cymbal 3, which is recorded. Would be interesting to see what happens with more mass and less mass when changing out the sympathetic cymbal(s) in the middle... (I'm pretty sure this would sound like crap (if anything at all), but who knows.)
