I lived that time but what I wouldn't give to be able to leave the world today and return to back then. If they ever make time machines a thing, I'll go back to the 80s and never ever return. Notice there's little to no obese to morbidly obese people, the food tasted better and wasn't filled with the junk and chemicals it is today, and young people knew how to socialize not just with their own age but with adults and others around them. Nobody had their nose in a phone, it was a much happier time. We didn't have the depression rates, people could afford to shop at the mall and hang out even. Thank you for sharing this.
I feel like I could fit in perfectly here. The fashion the hair, the people, the personalities I love it. Not like today, everything sucks and technology is De-humanizing people. Even if teens today do go to the mall they are all walking around blindly looking down at there phones. But if you went into a mall today with the same camera they were using you'd probably still get attention. Like is that thing really working? Thats seriously taking a video? Wow it's so old looking, that must be ancient, seriously it's working? Yes it records onto a tape you put in a VCR. OMG a VCR my grampa had one of those! Seriously though I love this video and it is a great that it made it's way onto youtube.
RIP Hanover Mall! Demo'ed last February. I grew up going there in the 90s and remember when they remodeled towards the end of the decade. In the early 2000s, when we were teenagers, our parents would drop us off on Fridays and we would get Coolatas and wander around.
That sound of rushing water in the background was from the huge fountain pool they had there. I always begged my grandmother or mother to go see it. People threw quarters and pennies in there. Back in the days when it was about the human experience , now people just talk to machines .
Man this brings back memories! I didn’t grow up in the 80s (unfortunately) but I remember going to this mall as a kid before they tore it down. It was never this busy though!
This was part of MTV's "Museum of Unnatural History" mall tour! Very cool to see footage of people attending the actual event (outside of the official promo shots.)
Because fried foods were fried in lard or beef tallow (even McD's fries), we used real sugar instead of corn syrup too and I'm telling you the seed oils, corn syrup and other crap they're doing to our food today is killing us. Heck there's more fat to obese kids in grand school than there are fit and healthy sized ones.
Oh yeah it was mall rat city back in the 80s, the peak of the peak of mall culture (although 90s were still pretty packed and even 00s not that that bad). And these videos don't even show how close to how packed it could get. It was awesome.
Wow! Lol!! Does this take me back?? Wasn't a teen in the 80's..90s was my teen time..but I do so remember how big it use to be to go to the mall! I grew up in small town in western N.Y. my parents decided we were going to take a trip to the Erie mall I believe it was and I was allowed to bring a friend. That was a huge thing for us! We talked about it for weeks! Til this day we both remember it. Things were so different then. I feel bad for our youth...so disconnected. Much love to everyone!! Love one another more!!
The girls from 1988 talk with such a sweet shy nature, fast forward to 2018, and we have the fearless tell it like it is brigade instead. Today teenagers are only interested in internet status, phones glued to there hands, like flies to shit.
This mall is now bulldozed, they only kept Macy's, back then was Filines department store. The area will be a court of outside stores compared the Hingham Derby Street shops. This mall was a end of a Era where noone had smart phones, we went to the mall to gather, shop, meet new people on Friday nights! Times have changed indeed.
Not a single fat person to been seen. No internet,no mass use of cell phones, not social media. You had to go out and actually talk to people or call them on the phone.
Just edited the comments to fully reflect the location. It's Hanover Massachusetts, and as of 2020, the Hanover Mall no longer exists. It was demolished to make room for a new plaza and condominiums. Boo. :-(
+Pov Yi Lol flat irons were around in the 80s I remember my mom having one. Just nobody wanted straight hair. .poofy and crimped /teased hair was the style. I was 5 years old when this was filmed and even I had the horrible crimped hair. I use to sneak my moms flat iron in my room and straighten my hair at night lol that's the only reason I remember that they existed
MrBubblescookie We had to work with what God gave us back then. There was no such thing as flat irons & blow outs. No smoothing syrums either, just gel and mousse.
Alison H It’s was an area that was mostly populated by white’s. The interviewers aren’t picking certain people it’s just that other races for the most part didn’t live in those communities at the time.

Cool video, nice man. I just clicked your red button
Wicked awesome!
Those were the years when cassette player was the shit lol oh and Nintendo
Actually, the compact disc player was considered state-of-the-art in the late 1980s.
Pov Yi Game Boy came out not long after this vid. That was huge.
Nintendo is the sh!t right now.
keonna thats how girls did their hair in the 80s. it was the style.
And their armpits smell like onions
No cell phones, hot chicks...I miss this.
Think I saw Orange julious!
Was the mall of the 80ies for me, made quite a few girlfriend's there and hard to believe it's gone.
For those of us that don't live in "Hanover", what city/state is this in?? Nothing in the description.
Just edited the comments to fully reflect the location. It's Hanover Massachusetts, and as of 2020, the Hanover Mall no longer exists. It was demolished to make room for a new plaza and condominiums. Boo. :-(
@@LloydelPictures Thanks. It's sad to see what's happening to so many malls around the country.
@@jeffwalsh6015 I agree. Retail as we've known it for decades and decades is likely to disappear or utterly change. Strange times.
I wonder what shoestore girl is doing today
Who the heck is Mark Brinkman?
So we start with halloween then tune? What are the other tunes you play,? The last one that only lasted for a few seconds sounded so familiar!?
I think it was the St Elmo’s Fire theme song!
can you please post the video of Joe Depauw running over 4 cement pilons on Plain St with his car?
@gearybrendan
LOL! I promise that I will. It might take me a little while to get to it, but it will appear. :)
Aaah the 80s a lot of bad hair and oversized clothes.
MrBubblescookie it was before hair straightener was invented lol

lol why them girls hair look like that?? it's so big and fluffy!
We didn't have hair straightener back then
It was the look. Aquanet was responsible!! Lol
It was called mall hair.
@Keonna Rae Summer 1988 was the peak of Mall Hair.
We didn't have straighteners lol. I got bullied so much for my hair.
Wow everyone’s white?
Yes. Straight, too, it seems.
Alison H It’s was an area that was mostly populated by white’s. The interviewers aren’t picking certain people it’s just that other races for the most part didn’t live in those communities at the time.
It’s the Massachusetts south shore. We just don’t have a lot of blacks, and for the most part the “mall girl” was a typically white thing.
And friendly and getting along?
And no stealing, fighting, screaming or shootings... boy do I miss the 80ies...
Must have been a lot of inbreeding in that area. Very scary looking people.
Nope. It's called Boston.
