  • Hi, I’m Bert Stephani and I’m in the middle of moving to a new house but I wanted to make this quick video about a new camera.
    A little over a week ago, I returned from a short trip to the land of the rising sun. And if you are a Fujifilm fan, you probably know by now that I wasn’t in Tokyo with the purpose of just drinking saké and eating sushi … although I did that too.
    I was invited to be part of the third and final X-summit of 2022. The big announcement this time was the camera that a lot of Fuji-fans have been waiting for: the X-T5
    I've been working with a prototype of this camera for a month or two now. Here are some of my experiences about the new camera.
    Rewatch the Fujifilm X-Summit: • X Summit Tokyo 2022/ F...
    My X-T5 project for Fujifilm: • X-T5: Bert Stephani/ F...

    Bert's the OG. All other photography-focused challenges stand on this guys' shoulders. I remember seeing your videos back in like 2008. I'm shooting with the X-T2 for 6 years now, and with the new sensor and all added features, I think it's time to upgrade to this new X-T5. The few disadvantages don't mean anything to me.
    With the new battery, there's no need anymore for a grip, other than making it easier to hold. But one of the advantages of a mirrorless is its smaller size, so why make it bigger again.
    Great review; great sample photos too. You convinced me!

    I think people kinda got spoiled with the X-H2 line and they seem to forget how amazing the X-T5 actually is. Just like you I prefer the X-Pro line and I can't wait to see what the next iteration will be but the X-T5 is a beast for most pro photographers and compact and light and discreet and it covers 99.9% of my needs. Kudos to Fujifilm and thanks for sharing your great images and honest opinion!

    You're a breath of fresh air among the youtube photography community. You show it's not necessary to shoot a $6000 medium format camera with a $5000 lens attached. The photographer is the brains of the process not how much one spends on gear.

    As someone who bought an X-T200 two years ago after shooting film for 4 years and last digital camera owned was like 10 years ago.. I didn't understand much and I was sad when I later found out the X-T200 doesn't have the magic of the different Fuji cameras because it doesn't have the X-Trans sensor... But I still love the camera and enjoy shooting with it so much. Coupled with Tamron 17-70 and a couple prime lenses, this is the most fun I had since I got into photography when I was like 12(15 years ago)..
    Now the X-T5 is going to be my first serious serious camera that I will get.
    Thank you FujiFilm for making photography so enjoyable and I can't wait to use the X-T5 and I believe it will be a camera that will last for years, maybe a decade even.

    5:35 I really love that shot
    I pre-ordered the X-T5 coming from an X-T2 which in my opinion is still a very capable camera, but the improvements of the X-T5 are hard to ignore. Especially the much improved autofocus (and subject recognition) and higher resolution appeal to me. IBIS is nice to have, but not really a requirement.

    Excellent review thank you for pointing out the pros and cons for the new and upcoming XT5. I have the XT3 and XPro3 and X100V and certainly keen to see where I can fit the new XT into my kit for future wedding / family events. I love the XPRO series but a little confusing to use both systems at events so makes sense to run two of the XT cameras together. I have never cared for battery grips as I carry spares on my pocket so the new upgrades are a welcome especially when partered up with the new 33 and 18mm 1.4 glass I recently added to my kit 😊

      @@bbasleigh6149 Well, it's not a lingering question at all. The new lenses came out before the 40MP sensor so they'd be ready for it, and the "old" 90mm f2 is still their sharpest lens. The 18 f1.4, 23 f1.4, 33 f1.4, 56 f1.2 WR and even the old 23/2, 35/2 and 50/2 and 50 f1.0 will be *more* than capable. I have two XT4s and you will definitely like the new double battery life, the IBIS and the AF advantages of the XT4 over the XT3, but the XT5 looks to be even better with tracking faces.

    I'm an XT shooter for 7 years, but I need a grip, so I'll be moving to the XH2s. I will hate the screen and miss the dials, but at least I can hold it with the big lenses. XT5 would be nice for landscape photography, but actually waiting to see if a smaller camera gets pixel shift multishot. Bring on the XE5!

    I use a mixed set of Fuji’s gear and like you my X-Ts are the money makers and practical rigs, but my X-Pros (and a sole X-E2s, which sucked me into the Fuji universe) are my passions. That said, I will be buying the ‘5’, though the lack of a BG is a huge negative in my opinion. The upgrades to the internals, 40mp, IBIS, etc...are just too tempting to pass up. I too hope to see these features in an upcoming X-Pro4, now that would ROCK!

    I’m really interested in this camera. My primary work is motion graphics, where I use my bmpcc6k for video and my Canon R5 for photos and some high res video. But as a hobby I really enjoy nature photography and do a lot of trail running. My R5 and pretty much all Canon RF weatherproof glass is just too heavy to carry on the trail while running and as nice as my iPhone 14 Pro is, it’s just not the same. I’m really drawn to how small and light this camera is and the x-line in general. I’ve never used Fujifilm cameras before. I’ve always had Canons. I’m just struggling to justify the cost, considering it’s not for work, and that it’s a whole new eco-system. This was a really great video and helps me feel it might be a worthwhile investment. If I can just find a way to carry it securely while running. :)

    Thanks! Nice review. My only real disappointment is that there isn't an optional vertical battery grip. I often need to use bigger lenses (including the amazing 8-16 mm for architectural work). The grip right through the XT range has provided balance and stability with big lenses. The XH-2 is not an option as I don't like the PASM system or ergonomics. Hoping for an XT-6 with the optional grip restored 🙏

    Great Video! (likes and subbed) but I'm more confused than ever lol.. I've been shooting an X-T2 since 2019, must have around 200,000 shots on it and will be getting a new camera when I go to the States in July (keeping the T2 as a back up/2nd camera).. If the X-T5 had a battery grip it would be a no brainer, I prefer the screen/dials, but I almost always use the grip with the 90mm, my most used lens. Decisions decisions

    • @bertstephani
      @bertstephani  ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally think they should have kept the grip option for the X-T5 although I never really use them. That said, if it's just for ergonomics, you might try one of those metal grips. I find they greatly improve stability with bigger lenses.

    • @JungleCatImages
      @JungleCatImages ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bertstephani Thanks for the suggestion. At this point I'm pretty convinced that I'll go for the X-H2s. I'm keeping the X-T2, so when I want dials and tilty screen I have the option, the T2 is still a very capable camera. I'm also keeping my X-E3 for when I want to stay small and inconspicuous. So right now my biggest need is for a work horse that can handle any type of professional situation that might arise, and it seems that the X-H2s is the best that Fuji has to offer.

    Great "review". I'm a Sony shooter, but I am so excited to see that Fuji has acknowledged that we are not all TH-camrs!! For a while now, the products being introduced by pretty much all camera companies seem to be designed for TH-camrs and video types. I had a hard time believing that the majority of new camera purchasers spend most of their time with the camera pointed at themselves and needed a front facing screen.! I just pre ordered a Sony A7RV, and one of the reasons is the new screen mechanism. Maybe the tide is turning and manufacturers are realizing that stills shooters are the majority of their clients.

    I’m really curious to see if they follow up with an X-S20 based on one of the new sensors(maybe in a year?) Otherwise Fuji’s current path seems to make a lot more sense in the “bringing in new users” vein, while still appeasing those of us who feel the nostalgic yearning to take photos with a fully manual chunk of metal… although they do tell you “while” you’re getting your exposure wrong, instead of having to wait a week to find out.

    I am thinking about replacing my Nikon D7000 with thenX-T5. I am a little worried about having no in-body flash, as it seems like a pain to have to attach a flash for quick one-off family / life photos. Does the lack of flash present any trouble for off-the-cuff indoor shots, or is the tech so good now, that a flash isn't always necessary?

    • @bertstephani
      @bertstephani  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't worry Jono. Technology has evolved a lot since the D7000. I never ever use flash for family/life photography. In fact I very very rarely use it for any reportage work. High ISO, IBIS and a fast prime let me shoot things that my eyes can hardly see. If you can stretch your budget to get a fast prime, you'll forget flash ever existed. The F1.4 primes are great but even with an F2 you'll go a long way. There are also some good 3rd party fast primes on the market.

      That's a difficult question. Generally I advise to buy the camera with a kit lens (18-55 or 16-80) because those lenses are pretty cheap if you buy them bundled with the camera. These lenses are versatile and give you the time to figure out what focal lengths you prefer etc. And an allround lens will always come in handy later on as well. Another option would be the Tamron superzoom that I reviewed a while ago. Pair a zoom with your favorite prime and there's not much you can't shoot. If I were you, I would probably go for the XF33mm F1.4 as my main lens and the 16-80 to do all the rest.

    I got one of the very first X-T1 bodies and bought another ('titanium') the day they were discontinued and used them as my primary work cameras (prefer X-E bodies for my 'fun/personal' work) until the X-PRO3 hit the shelves.
    I hadn't had a 'Flagship' body for a number of years so I got the Pro3. I shot work with it for a year, but as I am often called to shoot overhead off the LCD (Real Estate/Architecture is my mainstay these days), the inability to SEE the LCD when holding the camera over head was always an annoyance. I loved the camera in all other aspects even though I didn't use the Optical finder as I almost always have the XF10-24 on camera. As soon as the X-E4's came out, I sold the X-PRO3 and got an X-T3 for work (same good stuff INSIDE, but better ergonomics for what makes me money) and a few of the X-E4 bodies for fun and the occasional Events gig.
    I've never been happier in my 37 years of shooting for dollars.
    As I'm not at all interested in making video, the X-H series has never been of interest to me. I was somewhat disappointed that it looked like Fuji were going to take the X-T line to 'hybrid' focus with the X-T4. I'm very happy to see the X-T5 as a 'return to PHOTOGRAPHY.'
    I will almost certainly not get one until my X-T3 becomes less reliable than it is ...and as I still have my FIRST X-T1 (just covered with duct tape where the rubber kept falling off) and it works fine (though it's ugly)... it may be a while before the X-T3 isn't useful for work. While I don't have a pulling need for IBIS nor 40MP as you say, it doesn't HURT to have more sensor real estate to play with and eventually I'm sure an X-T5 will end up in my stable.

      To each their own. I think both options (and also the X-Pro3 screen) have their upsides and downsides, depending on the situation and your preferences. I get along well with any screen to be honest. But I may choose a camera based on the screen at times for a specific job. Not that another screen doesn't work but when you have the luxury to choose ...

    A cameralike this one, so small as the X-T5, without a battery grip? Fuji is losing sales with that decision. How can I use a 400, 600 mm lens on it?

      For long lenses the X-H2 would indeed be the better option now.

    For me the lack of an articulating screen is the deal breaker for me. So bummed... I thought I found my new camera. I just ALSO shoot myself playing music and I need that screen.
    Well that, and I keep reading reviews that the AF keeps missing eye focus and instead choosing the lashes.

    • @bertstephani
      @bertstephani  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In that case, the X-H2 might be the better choice (or the X-T4 which is still a great camera). Didn't experience any focus issues with the eye focus.

      How can you be bummed just because Fujifilm released one of three cameras with a standard tilt screen? The two top of the line, flagship cameras have a flippy screen. I was hoping that one of them would have the tilt screen, but no... they both had to be flippy screens. I was about to switch to Sony because their newest a7V has a screen that does both but then Fujifilm released the XT-5 and they put the tilt screen back on for photographers who don't shoot video.

    I fail to see anything special about the X-T5. I would never switch to Fuji anyway. Good cameras, sure, but nothing special that I can perceive. All camera systems are good these days. I'd rather spend money on photo workshops, books and travel.

    While the marketing people at fuji obviously thought that The XT-5 was going to be to the 1970's SLR what the X-Pro is to the Leica m/Rangefinder in terms of an 'imagined purist experience of shooting'...!!!! The intentional omission of a battery grip option massively devalues the XT line as a truly professional body and platform, especially for the use of heavier glass and video options and the ability to make the body a much more stable shooting platform on demand....not to mention if one actually needs more battery life...!!! and immediately made me think of it's being downgraded to something resembling the X-E? or XT-?? line of enthusiasts cameras by simple loss of functionality let alone the disregarding the ever changing needs of a professional photographer which really seemed quite an affront to both XT Users and the XT line it's self which had always previously offered professional features to professionals in a slightly smaller extremely flexible more easily handled package with a battery grip if needed for both functionality and greater stability....!!!!! Of course it seems that the designers and marketing people also thought that by removing functionality with a small nod to a purist aesthetic or design philosophy might bring some greater sense of exclusivity to the brand like the flip down screen on the X-Pro 3 or the Leica without a Screen or the Chocolate Teapot incapable of holding hot liquids....!!!! Which are all fine if you can afford 5 other £2000 plus cameras which can do all of the things you need them to do..... However it would appear that the Disappearance of the XT-?? line of enthusiasts cameras might suggest that instead of gaining greater market share by offering a professional solution in 2 form factors of differing sizes, in order to protect the XH line sales much like two other well known manufacturers they appear to be saying that anything other than an XH GFX or X-Pro, or in the case of the two aforementioned companies a 1Dx or a D5 isn't a Professional camera...... and £2000 and more for a camera which has been intentionally limited in essential functionality to protect sales of the XH line, or a to be slightly larger more fully specified X-T50 replacement and denigrating the standing of the XT line of cameras not to mention moving away from fuji's almost unique USP of a compact easy to handle flexible and truly professional platform is a fairly bitter and a fairly expensive pill to swallow when by this one simple thing by just including support for a battery grip option they could have chosen not to and continued developing and celebrating everything that is uniquely amazing about the XT line.....!!!!! So Hopefully as fuji have always been very good at listening in the past they might choose to redress this omission in the design brief and intended market segment of the XT5s or XT6......!!!!!! Which I'm Sure as by simply putting on the battery grip or taking it off could perform both roles in terms of aesthetics function and form equally well and therefore could only get them Greater market Share.....not smaller market share by upsetting their usually extremely loyal customers who have come to think of Fujifilm as a company which both listens and cares about fulfilling their needs both as loyal customers and photographers....!!!!!! So Please Fuji Please could you listen and reconsider this one simple thing for the benefit of everyone.....and not to say for the benefit of future sales of the XT line to people and professional photographers for whom its flexibility feature set and unique form factor it uniquely fills their needs.....!!!!!

      The vast majority of photographers are not professional. I’m bored witless by the comparatively few professionals that whine endlessly that camera manufacturers have missed a feature considered essential to them. Frankly as an amateur this camera looks amazing.

      I find it very important to be transparent and genuine. So the only scripts I read, are the ones I wrote. One of the reasons why I like to work with Fujifilm is that they respect that. Nobody has ever even suggested what I should or shouldn't say. In fact they've told me that they appreciate it that I never shy away from criticism.
