When IU released her song 23, she thought the age of 23 is like a flower that someday would bloom. Now she s in her 30s and she said that “there’s no reason or no need for everyone to be a flower, wants to live as a dandelion seed fluttering splendidly in the sky”
Also from her other interview ,the song holssi (dandelion flower seeds) is not only about dreaming high, but also acknowledging our insignificance, knowing that not everyone would bloom into flowers and that’s okay. Even as a mere dandelion seed, we can still thrive and find our own victory

The more I listen the more I like it. I fell in love with her rap at the first sight (listen). Once I heard her singing an acoustic version of Eight and she was rapping Yoongi's part. I love her.

When IU sang a live Shinee cover song on her interview show awhile back she said she stayed up til dawn singing *thirty* background tracks for it. Just for a one-off song for a web show. The girl is dedicated.
I've noticed that hard work & dedication are commonalities amongst those who are great in any profession, no surprise that extends to her as well.

The video is shot in LA which is a key to what the song is about. There have been a lot of people in Korea particularly who have said that IU doesn't need to try and make it in the West, particularly in the US. But here she is about to launch her 1st world tour that includes at least 8 stops in the West. 2 in Europe and 6 in the US.
She is talking to all Korean fans.
She spreading herself like Dandylion spores on the wind.
She isn't going to settle on smooth ground (i.e. taking the easy way).
She says she is a single spore (a soloist).
On a different road.
Fly high to bloom. (To reach her full potential)

(Meaning could be the child in IU is still a little nervous or when shevwas younger the thought of doing what she is now doing was scary or that she is acknowledging those in Korea who worry about her) the worrying about her however extents to all her fans around the world.
At the end she allows the cartoonish IU go has the real IU gets ready to head out.

Thank you for the post. It gives a more in-depth perspective about IU's "Holssi" here. Makes a lot of sense to me.
Americans are so absurdly narcissistic lmao. No the song is not about "making it in america"/ "the US market" or nonsense like that.
It's about her own potential which is sky high and limitless. She isn't settling for anything and she'll keep going higher and higher to wherever it takes her. Would she like more western fans? I'm sure she would but come on, you people seriously need to curb that insane level of narcissism
Holssi - HOL means Dandylion SSI means seed or Spore.
Here is my take on this video. And realize that virtually everything in an IU MV means somthing relevant to the songs lyrics and the MV.
Upto now IU has taken a slow approach to her concert plans. Slowli adding countries and increasing the size of venues. She didn't start doing concerts until she was about 20 (Korean age). At first they were all in Korea. She did a few concerts in Japan but I they weren't partvof a concert tour. Thecshe added Hong Kong and slowly continued to add countries in Southeast Asia. She came tonthe US once as part of a Kpop convention in 2014 but was frustrated by the experience because her english was virtually none existence so it was vert difficult to talk with fans something she treasures. She said she would learn English before returning. Of course Covid delayed her plans. But she continued to increase the size of her concert venues. To the pointvthat she became the 1st Korean female to headline a concert at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul. With her 2022 Golden Hour concert where 90,000 tickets sold out in 30 minutes with nearly 500,000 people waiting in the queue.
The fact that this video it was shot in LA, I believe is a big key to what the song is about. This is the 1st time IU has made a video in the US & guess what she is coming to th\e West (Europe and the US) to hold concerts for the 1st time. Don't tell me there isn't a connection. And by filming here & using LA has a back drop and American dancers she is establishing a connection to her Western audience.
There have been a lot of people, in Korea particularly, who say & have been saying, that IU doesn't need to prove herself by going to the US or Europe.
It seems as if she is talking to directly to someone, and telling then her plans and to not worry about her, she has this.
The opening scene of the figure floating is IU as she is coming to LA. The disruption the we see her on the ground looking across at LA. She has used this type of device before. Specially in Above the Time and Blueming (the vibration shown in the cup of water and then the shaking in Blueming, those 2 videos along with You & I as Pt1 and. Strawberry Moon as the final part make up a trilogy +1 story concerning a decade) to show a disruption in the Time/Space/Dimension continuum.
Analyzing the Song from this perspective
Where I lay will be somewhere much higher (by higher she doesn't mean better but rather higher risk then before. And obvious reference to the West in General and the US in particular.)
She spreading herself like Dandylion spores on the wind. (Which are carried by the wind carelessly without regard for boundaries or borders.)
She isn't going to settle on smooth ground (i.e. she is going to land and try to take root on comfortable easy terrain).
She says she is a single spore (a soloist).
On a different road. (She is taking a different road then what female Korean soloist usually take.)
Fly high to bloom. (To reach her full potential)

I'll even say goodbye (this sounds too much like her lyric in Eight where she is angry that her friends who passed away by suicide and " who just come and go as they please without even saying good bye". But she is saying goodbye, possibly saying she isn't committing career suicide. )

Tweety bird reference is definitely important and significant. A profile picture I saw has Tweety dressed like IU. So this reference becomes a little clearer. IU is likening herself to Tweety. Always returning to the cage which isn't a prison but rather a safe and comfortable place. Whch I suspect includes in addition to Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong Singapore etc all the places she has regularly toured ever since she started touring outside of Korea in 2017. Could it be IU's way of saying that she is leaving the cage and it's safety and comfort to see how high she can fly. To which I say go Tweety go we are all with you.
By filming this in the US with American dancers and American neighborhood etc, she is establishing a connection with her western audience.
The ending credit scene where the IU HOLSSI kite/balloon is behind the powerless gives the image that it is still in a cage and safe.
It is also interesting that the child looking out at the other kids dancing with IU, and appears to be interested but also a little nervous appears to be of Asian descent. (Meaning could be the child in IU that is still a little nervous or when she was younger the thought of doing what she is now doing was scary or that she is acknowledging those in Korea who worry about her) the worrying about her however extents to all her fans around the world.
At the end she allows the cartoonish IU go as the real IU, who is no longer wearing the Dandylion outfit of the ballon/kite gets ready to head out on her different road.
The opening scene is shot on Myer St along side the LA river, Tweety is is sitting on top of EL PATO SALSA.

I love her music so much. She is one of my favorite solo artists. She is such a beauty ! I really adore her. She is THE BEST.

Holssi meaning is spore, so in this mv context is more precise the seeds of dandelion (dandelion's spores).
And you are 💯 right, this mv is filmed entirely in LA. The first time ever IU done an mv filming overseas.

Since you're curious about the chorus (Tarzan what they call it lol) section, you can watch the Holssi recording in IU's channel, you can see how she sang the chorus each layer.
the message is very clear in the lyrics. Follow your dreams. Be like a dandelion seed. Go where the wind takes you. Don't be rooted in a place you don't want to be. The visuals say to follow her advice. You see the trash bags in the start of the video. They turn into dancers and then they go flying. No matter how the world see you, you shouldn't get trapped by that. Fly where the wind takes you. Don't be what the world want you to be. Be what you need to be. It's not easy and there will be problems along the way, but in the end it will take you to something better. That is her message. Fly free like a dandelion seed in the wind. Holssi means dandelion seed in Korean :)
