Awesome tip for EZdrummer users! I came up with an alternate solution instead of routing using Reaper, that is using the "Render selected area of tracks to stem track" function. That way you just need to "solo" the drum tracks one by one and render them to mono or stereo as required.
It would depend on the sample. Comp is for dynamics that are too wide. I would assume stock samples are already eq'd and compressed otherwise people would complain that they're hard to work with. Eq is for specific sound management. Tight Q eq is for surgery, getting rid of offensive frequencies and wide q eq is for altering the overall color of your sound. You don't need to learn how to specifically mix ezdrums, just understand what the tools you have are for. Know what you want, and understand how to apply those tools to achieve your desired sound.
@@jessjohnreed7964 if I leave my vst drum tracks unprocessed, they never compete against the other instruments. they just sound thin (using steven slate drums 5). I do not tweak the drums like real drums, but I definitely put some compression on and some slight EQ moves on the snare and the kick. But yeah, depends on how you want it to sound.
Wow! I have often seen this but I´ve never been sure about if this gives me any benefit in production except of saving CPU usage, although I printed down my guitar and bass track for a long time since I watched your video about it. But man, it instantly gives me so much more control over the gain of the single tracks, especially the room and the overheads! Plus the constant peaking on the snare track is gone! I had to lower the output volume inside the drum vst all the time before. Great man!
I usually route to audio tracks rather than an aux track and just hit record and play the song through. If what you're showing me here, by routing to an aux and then simply "committing" them, you may have saved me 3-6 minutes (depending on the length of the track). Kudos!
this is great for live recording of edrums with ezd. Great suggestion. I get the other way if your creating midi tracks through ezd and then want to print for final. Thank you!!!!
O M F G.. I've been bouncing them multiple times into stereo tracks, then converting them to mono post.. Had to do it 2 times to get them all .. the panning trick is genius...
I’ve found this is now the best way to go and have been doing things like this for a while. I find if I don’t I get too tempted to change this drum or this cymbal out, instead of just working with what I’ve got as I would with a live production
Killer info!!! Thank you so much bro! I've been playing guitar forever and a day but I am new to studio one and EZ drummer 2. This stuff is beyond amazing!! Really appreciate videos like yours as I am looking to become a creator myself. Thank you again!!! Joe
Jesus, I've been using EZ drummer for years without realising that they are the weird combination of dual mono. Never realised the hard panning within EZ drummer would be such an easy solution!
I've done this recently with my first EZD3 experience. When I tried to "bounce to disk" with my individual drum outs assigned in my DAW (Digital Performer), the drums were absent in the mix. That's when I realized that I needed to record the individual tracks to channels. It solved the problem. I need to find the "commit" button in DP. Would save a bit of time. Gonna bookmark this video and keep up with your stuff. Thanks.
Love using EZDrummer 2 for productions. Saw a quick overview of how you mix the stems in another video but, would enjoy seeing a more in depth approach on what you consider too much EQ and Compression on EZ Drummer tracks.
Another thing you can do within Reaper for EZD is just press “multi out” and then assign what you need where for speed if you don’t have a set template
Trying to figure out how to do this on Mixcraft 9 Professional Studio... I have everything routed to individual "sub-tracks," and panned how i want them, but I can't seem to find how to print or render them to audio.
I work with EZDrummer almost the exact same way. Only difference is, I embrace that EZDrummer has already panned the toms for me and keep them on stereo tracks. For snare and kick, yes, always mono.
I use Superior Drummer 3, but aa you would imagine, the process is exactly the same via the mixer. The only caveat with SD, is that there are individual effects as inserts, you’ll want to make sure to remove them prior to Aux’ing out as they are pre-fader and they will output to ProTools (or your DAW), and prevent dry tracks. Also in SD3 mic bleed is customizable, and like effects it’s another consideration. Good video though!
Thank you very much for that tip about removing the individual effects. also you say in SD 3 the process is exactly the same as EZ drummer ? like explained in this video ? thanks so much. cheers.
I also use EZDrummer, however, I do it a little different! First I send the drums to their own output like you did, but I then export the EZDrummer stems to a folder and import them into my session at the same time (you can do this quite easily in Studio One). Then I have printed tracks of all the drums rendered in audio, ready to EQ or add FX. Also in Studio One, you can make any of the imported stereo tracks mono by clicking on the stereo/mono button.
Great video! I love they way your teach. Super clear and to the point. Annnnd you give the reason why you it this way. Audio tracks will come in handy when I record tracks at home to send to the guitarist for mixing later.
I primarily use Audition which has no midi support so I use guitar pro to write the MIDI drum track. Put it in the stand alone ezdrummer program and export each individual part as audio by going to the mixer and soloing each track and exporting as audio. It sounds convoluted but I've been doing it that way for so many years it feels natural for me.
I've been using ez drummer for years. Metal Machine is my favorite expansion for sure. The Ludwig Supraphonic is sampled incredibly well. Never thought to print the tracks though. Might have to give it a try. Thanks Bobby!
thanks for the information great video i always render the ezdrummer tracks is a great way to work that way you can see the wave form like real drums thanks
Awesome video. One thing though with ezdrummer you don't have to hard pan the kick track just make your mono aux track and select either the plugin 2L or 2R. This will play both kick drums on a single mono track.
Almost. In fact, I do render soloing each of piece of drums that needed , so I work the "wavs" in the mix. EZdrummer is great, SD is more natural thou. In EZ, I used to choose the minimal processing option (natural mix or something like that), turn any effects off and so on. Your idea of creating a Template is good, I probably will add it to my workflow. Thx
I totally get why you'd want the audio tracks. But I am so new to this, I just can follow along. I am using ezdrummer3, which appears to do the midi output channels differently. Each channel is 1/2 or 3/4 or 5/6....etc. I'm using studio one 5, I've managed to get the individual tracks on my mixer, but I get lost when it comes to trying to get them on my actual timeline. Please please would you do an updated version of this video, and really dumb it down to words of one syllable for idiots like me. Love your work Cheers
Great technique!,….I use LUNA, and by rendering, bouncing those dialed-in tracks, I never have to worry about some parameter changing that will affect my final mix. And, if I don’t like the render, I can go back, tweak it in MIDI, and then re-render. Excellent work around. Thank you.

this is super helpful, I've been wondering how to do this in the past, i would split the midi files into their own tracks but it was kind of a pain in the ass this is def a better approach! i will have to watch this video 4000 times until i completely get it Thanx Bobby! another great video
In Cubase I can press F11 set EZ drummer as a rack and then output individually through the rack. Is this what you were describing later in the video because that was slightly confusing. That way all the tracks get created for you and then you can do all the panning etc you described. Do other DAWs not have this feature?
Thanks for this video which is helping me step by step to reach the sound I'm looking for... I wonder, since I'm also using EZBass : should I print those parts as well ?
Hi. That was a great video!! What is your opinion on simulating some mic bleeding in each channel? not for metal but for more "acoustic soft sounding" type of approach. IDK maybe by adding some OH bleed in the Snare Top or Kick bleed in the Snare Bottom, adding some mili seconds to the bleed signal. Have you tryed?? Does it not help at all?
What I don't understand is this: When you route the tracks from EZ D to the auxiliary channels you created, is the fader change the same or did you change it later? I use Studio One and when I assign the outputs the faders are at zero, but in your case they are modified. Same thing for audio. when you render/Commit/Bounce are you exporting the already adjusted levels? in that case I should find the audio track faders at zero but with the levels previously adjusted before exporting, but even in this case I see your audio track faders modified and adjusted. This makes a difference to me. the levels of the various channels during export/commit/bounce. Thanx Bob. You are great
Lol was expecting to see some new info, for the first time I actually feel smart because I already knew this. Believe me, I'm no pro, hence why I am on here in the first place but routing seems kinda obvious to me... like one of the first things I learned about, much before trying to tackle eq and compression and mix balance... damn you mix balance. There just isn't enough space for all the things!
Yup of course on EZD2 you need to export the tracks out if you want to manipulate them further and is 1 of the main reasons I use Superior Drummer 3. Plus the midi learn and midi mapping blows on EZD2 but excellent on SD3. There is not much to do with either of them since they are processed yo begin with as opposed to stuff like Ugritone drums which I hate.
oh shit been waiting for this one!!! edit: well, I already knew how to do all of that (but just learned recently) ... but I haven't been printing (had no idea that it varied like that). That's cool! I'm curious as to how you actually go about applying eq, comp, & verb to these virtual kits... ESPECIALLY compression (since it already has a compression track itself, but I don't really find that it is enough most of the time). Do you tend to hit each drum track with its own compression, hit it in a bus all at once, or both? EQ makes sense to do it on a per drum basis, but compression, I just don't know. I've tried both and am not sure what I like better. As usual, thanks for your wisdom, Bobby!
Hi! Firstly, thanks for all the great content!! Secondly, the Metal Machine original mix preset sounds far better here than out of the box. Particularly the snare. What tweaks did you make internally, and did you do any processing externally on the demo that falls around the 1:30 mark? If so, what? Thirdly, if the demo here is not processed externally, could you share your modified original mix preset? Thanks, and keep up the great work!!!
Question, I do the near exact same thing except I don’t pan the drum track in EZ Drummer, I typically leave the kick and snare centered as they are, but I route them out in different channels. Kick channel one, snare channel two. Is this the same thing? Or will panning them hard right or left before routing them out give me a different result?
Ok I finally found this video I watched a week ago about routing ez through pro tools. So you say you can have like your mono kick and mono snare ran both in output 2 panned one left and one right and then as individual tracks. Even if they are hard panned in ez they still bleed into the opposite tracks. Why not just make them individual outputs? Also I just tried to commit the kick just to try one out. It doesn't work like that. It needs a visual clip.
¡Serious and very important cuestión for you my friend! Mixing the Midi Battery inside of VST (EZDrummer, Superior Drummer. Addictive Drums) or mixing it outside in the DAW's Tracks.... Now a days, taking in count the improvement of modern VST versions (EZDrummer 3 Superior Drummer 3, Addictive Drums 2) ¿Is it necessary separating tracks in the DAW or mix it in the VST itself? Thanks. I appreciate you opinion.
Gerneral question about ezdrummer that I never completely understood: Ezdrummer is based on having kit presets, which from my understanding should be heavily relying on bus processing, most imporatantely bus compression (It's possible to switch different elements of the kit with other elements, so the drums themselfs should be already processed at the drum level before you switch them). Given that, if I like the sound of a preset that I created, does it make sense to export it? Will it sound the same with multi-out or will I lose all the bus compression and fx that was defined by the preset I started with?
I do export my tracks into auxiliary on Reaper but always in stereo. I wonder how to do it properly in mono as you said. It still seems tricky to me to do it on Reaper. KIller videos and tutorials Bobby!! Keep it up!!
I’ve personally never been a very big fan of EZDrummer, the Mjölnir from Solemn Tones has been my go-to for the last 3 or so years, and I would be absolutely lost without it. Still a helpful tutorial nonetheless.
Hey Bobby, can you explain why you hard pan two drums into one track, and then center them again in the daw? For example, what is the point of having both kick and snare on one track in stead of two? Cheers
Both kick and snare are being sent out through EZdrummer output 2. The thing to remember is that EZdrummer's outputs are stereo. A stereo output is actually just 2 mono outputs combined and hard panned. The kicks are panned left (output 2-L) and the snare is panned right (output 2-R). My aux tracks are all mono. I assign my kick aux in to receive Ezdrummer's output 2-L. I assign my my snare aux in to receive EZdrunner's 2-R. I prefer to do all of my EZdrummer mixing (panning/level/EQ/compression) within my DAW for more control and this is the only way to export the individual drums from EZdrummer.
Thanks for this! Why do my kits change and pans go back to center every time I press play? And so when I render my kick and snare are still on the same track together.
Ok, good video, but, what about if we just solo a piece on mixer and render the channel? Of course it gonna take much longer, but you'll have a great range control.
You can do that, but you have to remember that the multi-samples the plugin pulls from will be different every time you bounce a separate track down. This might mean that the printed room, overheads and close mics might be using different hits because they weren't bounced simultaneously.
@@FrightboxRecording Actually printed room, close mics and overhead won't change if you solo one piece. It stills like all pieaces are playing. Try it then come back here. I was wondering if your way maybe preserve the volume balance better. Regards from Brazil!
@@xangai87 The individual outputs and sounds don't change, it's the samples that the plugin pulls from that will be different since it's technically pulling from them at different times. When they're all playing at once, all of the samples are being pulled at the same time so they're the same source sounds. It has to do with multisampling and how it randomizes the samples to sound more natural.
I'm unsure about the hard panning you mentioned - such as the kick for example. When I do this from EZ Drummer into logic pro x it just sounds like the kick is coming out of the 1 speaker. Have I missed something ?
That's so cool ! Thanks a lot for it. I'm using Logic pro so i will need to try it next time ill do some "mixing". Can You also tell us how are you mixing EZ drummer, once exported? I mean, would be great to know how are You treatin' the tracks to sound even better than out of the box? Great job, keep it up ! All the best from Ireland :-)
Hi Bobby!! Amazing, tutorial, thanks a million! I’ve been doing very similar as you taught, but I have one question, if you have time to answer: I always find the Amb channel, which is a stereo one, with a lot of kick bleeding (more than I wanted). And apparently there isn’t option to tweak and reduce it in EZD. It somehow doesn’t sound good, because my kick is solid in the center and the stereo kick bleed of the Amb channel bounces too much on the sides. I can’t lower the volume, because It would lack a lot of the amazing snare character this channel provides. So I eq it to the bones to reduce the frequencies below 100hz and use Ozone Imager to narrow those same 100hz and below. This is how I try to fix it, but still, there’s a lot of the kick click left on the sides. I wonder if you already had the same problem and how you worked it around. Thank you very much!!!
Hey, Bobby. Can you give me a tip on this one, mate, I can't find a workaround and Im stuck. It's about compressing a bass guitar. So, when the bass plays in the lower register, A0 (note) for example , the compressor is working just fine, the bass is sitting perfect in the mix, but when the bass starts to play higher octaves, notes, they sound much, much louder and are all over the mix. It's like BOOM! I tried different compressors - Waves CLA-76, CLA-3A, CLA-2, C1, tried different settings - attack and release time, but the problem still remains. I can address this problem with an EQ to kill harmonics, or velocities changes, but I don't believe this is the solution. What about if you go Live, play on a concert and this problem occures? How do you address this problem, mate? Thanks for the anwers. Maybe you could do a video about good bass compression and address this particular problem? Would be great!
Just wondering if there is a difference in panning after you commit to wave. Like in the video you panned a few things and then committed to the wave form. Also my ez drummer has compression. I didn't see that on your version. Wondering if you use that.
When I render/commmit the aux tracks down to audio tracks, the audio tracks are stereo files. Strange considering my aux tracks are mono and are routed as you demonstrate. Any way to overcome this?
So do you just adjust your drum levels within the plugin before rendering? Also, I don't understand FX busses. How would I set up a reverb bus in Reaper and would the sends be pre-fader?

i be happy if ezdrummer would ever show up in a daw
You gotta get a 3rd party VST for it to show up in your virtual instrument

It would depend on the sample.
Comp is for dynamics that are too wide. I would assume stock samples are already eq'd and compressed otherwise people would complain that they're hard to work with.

Thank you . This is awesome information...
My pleasure, Bruce!
¡Serious and very important cuestión for you my friend! Mixing the Midi Battery inside of VST (EZDrummer, Superior Drummer. Addictive Drums) or mixing it outside in the DAW's Tracks....
Now a days, taking in count the improvement of modern VST versions (EZDrummer 3 Superior Drummer 3, Addictive Drums 2)
¿Is it necessary separating tracks in the DAW or mix it in the VST itself?
Hey Boby, that would be awesome if you did it again, but this time using SD 3 and Reaper. We will be very grateful. By the way, you're great.
Awesome video 🙏 🙏
I do export my tracks into auxiliary on Reaper but always in stereo. I wonder how to do it properly in mono as you said. It still seems tricky to me to do it on Reaper. KIller videos and tutorials Bobby!! Keep it up!!
I’ve personally never been a very big fan of EZDrummer, the Mjölnir from Solemn Tones has been my go-to for the last 3 or so years, and I would be absolutely lost without it. Still a helpful tutorial nonetheless.
I guess I will have to figure out how to route but thank you for this video, it was def informative!
EZdrummer has separate outputs that you can route to individual tracks in your DAW for mixing.
@@FrightboxRecording yep just found that out yesterday…you still do the aux channels though?
@@FrightboxRecording Ah right, so the DAW sees the "stereo" track as two separate tracks then?
@@EvilBlakey Yes, a stereo source is always just two mono sources. Stereos, Daw's, audio equipment...same deal for all things audio.
@@FrightboxRecording Thanks a lot :)
So if I render the kick track as a mono with panning at center it's the same thing? And with overheads? It's a stereo source
Thanks for this! Why do my kits change and pans go back to center every time I press play? And so when I render my kick and snare are still on the same track together.
Great video! Thank you for the awesome information. This is super helpful!
Great info !
Wonderful video Bobby! Thank you
This was amazing! Would LOVE a metal drum mixing tutorial if you can?!!!
All the best from Ireland :-)
thanks super useful! greetings from argentina!
I use EZdrummer 2 for snare and kick and Addictive drums for hihat, toms and cymbals
Thanks for this, but any idea how to select the L or R channel in Ableton? I can only select the stereo pair.
Very informative, thank you!
Thank you
Thanks!
Great tip! It's even simple in Reaper
I don't use EZDrummer, but just curious if hard panning inside EZdrummer jacks up the stereo image of the elements in the OH and Room tracks?
Using Kvlt Drums in Reaper and doing exactly the same 🤘
thats a very handy trick. i prefer mixing real drums so to get ez drummer to do that is really useful\
Nice man ! If I made a list of all the things I wanted you to explain it would be as perfect as the latest videos. Really nice !
When I render/commmit the aux tracks down to audio tracks, the audio tracks are stereo files. Strange considering my aux tracks are mono and are routed as you demonstrate. Any way to overcome this?
This is very helpful since I use superior drummer on pro tools
So do you just adjust your drum levels within the plugin before rendering? Also, I don't understand FX busses. How would I set up a reverb bus in Reaper and would the sends be pre-fader?
What's the name of the song in the intro? I couldn't find it on the link in the description
Hi !!! I can hear midi drumtracks when I set multiple outputs in EZ mixer. Where is a problem?
