I don't know why but do you think Adam may really believe that S is his Eden and it's not just an act anymore? Cuz all of he's speeches and effects around him, and that while begin in the zone, he still could explain to Langa everything that it was? Like all of S changes around him while we see his perspective in the end. I think this guy might be insane.
@@GabeKis-fz8tn let's start with the fact that there was no zone to begin with. And there was a troublemaker and vindictive child Cherry, who constantly lies to the main characters and uses them. Notice that he talks about the zone without having any idea about it. Since he himself has never skated without accurate calculations. In fact, "zone" is a nice euphemism for Adam's insanity and Langa's similar lunacy. But all of this only becomes apparent in the independent translation of blogger Kudouusagi. Which was not restricted by the censorship imposed because the original work raises the problem of troubled teens, whom adults mostly don't care about. They have no friends, they have no moral support and no acceptable role models. They are at risk and periodically attempt suicide under the pressure of the real cruel world. Therefore, in desperation, they grab onto the first person who shows concern. It's no coincidence that a lot of staff interviews, including director Utsumi's, emphasize that the main characters are just children.
32:11 that dream sequence made me think Reki has a PTSD and that he's subconsciously on the lookout to protect Langa from psychos like Adam. Thats why he got so mad at him. In japanise version he said "Do you know how much I-" I think he wanted to say more then trusted you. He may wanted to say I care about you, but he stopped himself cuz he knows how this would sound. Skate is fun for them, but should not be taken to extreme. He had his first flashback about his friend, when he heard that everyone who fight Adam ended up injured and quits Skateboarding. I don't think Reki's friend fell or got hit by a car. I think this happened at S. Plus there was this scene where Reki got beat up by a skating gang he was associated with. And I wonder how? Was it just for drama? I don't think so. And during the eliminations at S, there was a gang that tried to beat up Langa. I don't know why but I think Reki's friend got beat up by a skating gang that Reki was in, and that's why they don't talk anymore. Even if that guy wanted to come back to S, he couldn't cuz he's paralysed. Reki now wants another friend to skate with, but he's past demons catch up to him soon after he meets Langa. That's my theory and I wish season 2 would explain more.
Reki has PTSD because his friend crashed in front of him. In his dream, Reki, who fears for Langa, transfers his negative experience to him. The friend is not paralyzed, but just badly injured because he and Reki were doing very dangerous tricks on skateboards. And the first thing Reki's mom asked when she saw Langa, "He's not getting you into trouble, right?" The fight with the gang in episode 10 was instigated by Reki himself because he felt guilty about Langa and wanted to punish himself. After being dumped by that friend, Reki tried to fill the void of his loss by joining this gang, but these guys couldn't replace the friend he had known for five years. In episode 7, Reki tried to say, "Do you have any idea how scared I was for you back in the first race with Adam?"
Hello! I am Asian and you are very spot-on and eloquent in explaining the inner and outer faces we adopt. My friends and I were saying that "S" provided them a space to have a "drag persona" where they can escape. But I find it interesting that in "S" Reki is the one who is himself because skating IS his identity. Reki is my favorite character but I like everyone, even Adam in the sense of characterization and your theory that Adam is out of practice and uses intimidation was eye-opening! :) I also think that Joe could be a parental figure (at least for Reki) but it's really Shadow who is the real caretaker. I do like that they visited him in hospital. I was so surprised how moved I was by this anime that I keep recommending it to everyone I know.
Love this video. This was also a show I put on expecting something pretty base-level fun and took me by surprise with the raw emotion from the characters. And I 100% agree about the curtains being blue for a reason. I think one of the most interesting parts of media is interpretation, sometimes weather or not it was intended. Looking forward to part 2!
I loved you analysis so much. Yes, Adam needs all the therapy in the world. Holy heck- having shadow as the main caretaker of the group it's very on point. Man, I need to rewatch Sk8
I love this analysis! Honestly, Sk8 means so much to me because by the time I watched it I was also in the process of grieving. It was very healing for me to see the different ways characters cope with whatever problems, anxieties and fears they have. Still, this analysis sure feels like a revelation! 💕In the end, I think Sk8 is not only a very fun show with amazing characters and interactions, but it's also a uplifting anime about the importance of processing loss, finding closer in meaningful bonds and fill a little bit of the emptiness in your heart with fun, new things. So I loved seeing Langa go from watching the days pass by to engaging with life and regaining his motivation and passion again! Also, I really really love SK8 for conveying the message that is ok to "distract" yourself from the pain 🤔 I noticed that after Langa told Reki his dad had passed away, Reki just said "I'm sorry" and they moved on from the subject. And it's not conveyed as "Langa is running away from his pain" and more in a "Langa is doing this to withstand his pain". Many times alienation things are seen in a bad light, but not in this anime. It's a much valid and important way to cope with sadness if said alienation brings happiness into your life and makes it actively better 💞 Langa's mother herself knows that and it warms my heart!
Thank you so much for the video. I started watching sk8 for beautiful men but man, from ep 6 to ep 12, it took me on an emotional journey I wasn't ready for. I'm not ashamed to say I cried with Reki because how relatable his story is. Your take on Langa, Reki n Cherry are so spot on and 100% agree with you on Shadow. Please make part 2 🙏
Such an amazing freaking video! Ah, I absolutely love this anime (: and your analysis is so interesting. I had a similar experience with SK8 in the way that it also surprised me with Feelings when I first watched it. I admittedly have a soft spot for stories about friendship that when it came out it was captivating to see a study in how these bonds bend and break. So that was my main lens for thinking about SK8. I genuinely hadn't thought of grief as an overarching theme, since I was doggedly focused on the neighbouring topic of friendship, but watching this video has definitely recoloured a lot of the conclusions I'd made about the show. You exposit your ideas so clearly and with such obvious care that it really makes my day to watch your videos, just by giving me an excuse to think more about media and art. I'm sincerely happy to have found your channel, have a good day :)
I watched sk8 for the first time last week and am looking up stuff about it. Loved this video so much and all your thoughts about grief. Those quick cuts whenever you emphasize these guys need to go to therapy…. Yeah they do 😂
Ah, I loved this video! Readily awaiting part 2. I love seeing other people analyze the media they love. I was thinking of analyzing Sk8 myself on my Tumblr.
God I love this video & I love this show. So glad to see I’m not the only one who watched Sk8 during the pandemic & got unexpectedly emotionally shattered haha. Your analysis of Cherry & Joe are so spot on but especially Cherry. I found him to be such a surprisingly interesting character
i love this anime so so so, SO much! i'm on my what third rewatch?? anyway, love the vid! i love the way you analyze each character, and i can't wait for part 2 whenever it comes out!
Love your analysis! SK8 is one of my favorite shows, mostly because of it's balance of chillness and depth, comedy and heart-breaking drama. Probably on the same lvl as Angel Beats once hit me. And because of the way it shows friends relationship no other sport anime has ever done. It's easy for people to be friends and admire each other while working toward the same goal and being equally skilled (or actually have a chance to become equals), but it's a completely different story when the two main leads have such a difference in their skills/talent. The way it states the brutal truth that there is, in fact, a limit to one's capabilities (thing no other shounen sport anime has ever addressed to, again; it's always "you can make it if you try hard enough"). The way it deals with grief, anger and envy, and comes down to show the true meaning of a simple "it's not worth it if it isn't fun" is just beautiful. Really glad to find someone who gives SK8 all credits it deserves. Please please please give us Part 2 🙏
I like that the main character is not a chosen one but a good guy that want's to beat the villan regarthless. Maybe it's kinda sad that he's screentime was shortened for Langa's but it has its purpouse. Also Im glad that they presented this paralell between them and Joe and Cherrry. They also have diffrent skills, Joe is slower but stronger, and Cherry is more technical while skateboarding. Im glad that the conclusion thet was presented was "they dont have to be equally as good, but they boath are vallid. They want to skate together and thats all that matters. But Adam didn't like it. And here is something abouth Adam. He looked for suppoused equal. He's Eve. But all of this candidate's are vulnerable to his intimidation, Reki, Miya, Langa. But Langa was the only one who was not affraid. If fact he was better then him in practicallity. The only one who comes closets to begin his equal. Is Snake (Tadashi) Thats why he didnt want him to take part in the competition.

Sorry, but your analysis doesn't hold up to any scrutiny and I wouldn't pay my two cents for it. How nice that there are independent interpreters in the world who share their invaluable information about the show without too much hype. The director and screenwriter have created a complex and deep story about several people under masks, which you interpret by passing off your headcanons as real facts. Like your claim that Reki and company went to Miyakojima during Golden Week. I'm sorry, I don't believe you love this show.
I love this analysis!!! I cant wait for part 2!!! Your voice and how you clearly say your thoughts and collect them together in a clear matter is very elegant!!! Cant wait to see how much more “deep” you get with this anime!!! 🤍
"I can't wait for this man to go to therapy and realize he's just like his father" THATS FOUL 😂😂
I don't know why but do you think Adam may really believe that S is his Eden and it's not just an act anymore?
