LU: Slow/Fast Trains on the District/Piccadilly Lines - Part 1

  • Prelude: • London Underground: Ol...
    Part II: • LU: Slow/Fast Trains o...
    This is the first part (after the prelude) of my film on the District and Piccadilly lines.
    Similarly to the previously published small series on the Metropolitan and Jubilee lines, the District and Piccadilly lines share their route between South Kensington and Acton Town. The District line provides slow (local) service, while the Piccadilly line runs fast (express).
    The route is particularly interesting, as the District line is part of the subsurface network, using larger trains than the Piccadilly line, which belongs to the deep tube network. Also, both lines still use quite old rolling stock. The Piccadilly line is operated with 1973 tube stock, and many of the District line trains are still formed of D78 stock; which, however, is gradually being replaced with shiny new S7 stock.
    In this film we are first looking at Barons Court and Hammersmith stations, both of which are served by both lines. In the second half we then focus on Ravenscourt Park and Stamford Brook, which are skipped by the Piccadilly line.
    Enjoy!
    Filmed on 19 October 2015.

    Barons Court is a great station for various reasons:
    1) Only stn on LT with those wide blue station signs over the benches.
    2) Best place westbound to transfer from District to Piccadilly. (Can't tell you how many people look at the map and lug all their bags up the steps at Earls Court.)
    3) Lovely walk to the Queens Tennis club. The tournament is the warm up for Wimbledon.

    I really like the clicks and hisses of the Piccadilly line trains, it really blows my mind that they are being replaced before the Bakerloo trains that have spent years taking a battering on the mainline section.

      The Piccadilly line is 46 miles long, the Bakerloo just 14. The Piccadilly line is also more frequent, both of these factors meaning the sets pick up way more miles, meaning they require more maintenance. The Piccadilly line also has much higher passenger numbers. This is why the 73 stock is being replaced first.

      Not to mention the picadilly is the airport line so it is what people coming into London might see first.

    nice video and the 1973 stock is 9 years younger in Design than a R32 C,J, & Z trains but 11 years younger in service than R32 or 5 years later than a R42 J train regarding the D78 stock MTA subway equivalents are R62 R62A R68 & R68A since these trains entered service between 1980 and 1989 alongside the D stock which entered service on the Underground from 1981-1984

    It's such a shame that the D stocks got withdrawn. You used to get a huge variety of stock on the Sub surface lines. Now it's just bland and boring. All they use is stupid S stock trains. Hardly any of the A, C or 1967 stock got saved. They all went to the dreaded Rotherham scrapyard instead. At least the deep level lines have a variety but soon it'll all be replaced by those awful NTFL. Why do national rail companies have a massive Fetish on standardizing the railways. Soon the so called "aventra" trains will replace everything so it not worth trains potting anymore because all you'll get is Damn aventras. A shame really.

      I disagree. I think the S stock has far more character than both C and D stock. There’s something very fascinating about standing on an old-style platform at Baker Street and suddenly seeing a modern train coming through.

    • @agent_605
      @agent_605 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They standardise because it's cheaper, there isn't any reason to have multiple different types of trains running on the same tracks. They cater for the travelling public, not enthusiasts

    Greetings from a US rail fan. What happened at 00:53? I wanted to believe that this would be a "timed transfer" between lines, but the train on the left shut its doors and pulled away. Do timed transfers occur on the Underground?

    • @Luftschlange
      @Luftschlange  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +David Thaler Trains run every 2-5 minutes, so there is no need for a timed transfer. In fact, if the Piccadilly line train would have waited, it would have probably delayed the trains behind it.

    • @someonesomewhere1240
      @someonesomewhere1240 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they've got fast enough frequencies that there'll be another train along in a minute or two anyway. Waiting would only mean that delays are more likely to snowball from one line to another.

    • @sonicboy678
      @sonicboy678 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest, I can only see timed transfers for any potential night service.

    • @grahampearson5670

      That section of the Piccadilly Line is express so none of them stop at Chiswick Park, Stamford Brook or Ravenscourt Park. During late morning, all afternoon and early evening Piccadilly Line trains also skip Turnham Green.

      +Liam Doyle depends where you are, most of the major stations have trains every 30 seconds. That is, all city stations and Strathfield, other than that, there are trains every 7.5 minutes on a lot of lines. Also another thing, Sydney doesn't need trains every 2 minutes to everywhere, because there aren't as many people compared to London. (9 or something million, compared to 4.5 million. That is half)

    • @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042
      @pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Liam Doyle yes, Sydney is more spread out, which in my opinion, is why a Metro system does not work here, the distances are too far, and the one they are building already goes out of the zone that most cities have them confined to.
