when the notes sound like that, Whiney is singing most times in what is called over drive mode or edge mode. A great number of singers sing only in neutral or curbing mode. Whitney sings in 4 modes. Neutral, curbing overdrive and edge....It is the way she is using her formants and her resonance structures. That is what sets her apart. I laugh when they compare some singers to her. She had tools they never learnt how to use...Her voice was not a very big voice but it was trained to death and she understood exactly what she had to do to change the gears.. The singers compared to her do not have this
The difference between Whitney and most singers is that the principle of Whitney’s training was rooted in edge and overdrive(though the terminology wasn’t around back then, the fact still remains). Seeing as she is a well developed product of the black church, it’s fitting that our roots sank deep into her style of singing. Most singers are not trained in this area so if it doesn’t come naturally to them, it can definitely hurt their voices.
😂And just let you know there were two more whitney requests I did a while ago that were blocked so sorry if you've been waiting but sometimes its out of my control
Love this medley. I was blessed to have seen Whitney live twice. 1st 80,000 people 2nd 5,000 people venue. That voice bounced both times. He level of control and ability to get that power out of that small frame was just stunning to see. Life changing for me at a young age.
This performance meant a lot to her because she got booed at the Soul Train Awards by our own people and they said she sang to white, so she had to give them what they wanted and this is why she is saying how do you like me now.
This is after the boos she got at soul train for her pop records, so this was a win for her , this album was an RNB album not pop on purpose! Then after his it was back to her Queen of pop reign with the bodyguard!
The guy in the beginning was Paul Schaffer, he was the musical director for The David Letterman Show. He also produces music, one was a compilation of different singers--where he featured a 16 year old singer who would turn out to be the greatest vocalist of all time--Whitney Houston. Go listen to it, it’s a song called Eternal Love…she sounded so amazing even at 16. The songs she sung in the beginning Lover Man/My Man are classics from none other than Ms Billie Holliday. When I tell you that there wasn’t anything Whitney could sing…and I will say it again and again…during her prime Whitney’s voice had no weaknesses. At the end when she says “How You Like Me Now!!” she’s referring to the incident where she was boo’d at the Soul Train Awards years before when she was a performer, that was one of the most disrespectful things she had faced. The resonance was huge because it was Whitney Houston…plus this wasn’t a very huge place where they were performing. And with Whitney when she’s full out belting there’s nowhere for her voice to go but resonate all around. But you should take a listen to Whitney at 16 singing Eternal Love…it’s an audio only, there’s also an audio of her singing it live during her first concert tour that pretty amazing as well but when you hear her at 15/16 you can hear and understand how phenomenal she would become. Edit to add: Here’s the link to that song th-cam.com/video/UDwyRr-tNok/w-d-xo.html Edit to clarify: the person that was standing there was Paul Schaffer. The compilation that Whitney was featured in was done by Paul Jabari. Don’t want to give out misinformation.
First off thank you for all this info I love learning about the history of the music industry. I'm super interested to hear whitney this young so ill be reacting to that for sure 👍
😪 unfortunately I'm the odd one out, most israelis don't know what rnb is and they only know whitney for example by name or just IWALY...hopefully soul and rnb becomes pop globally again thats the only way to reach the Israeli crowd. And thank you I'm sure your musical taste is great as well if you like mine 😉
Israeli artists that are big are either generic pop acts like noa kirel/anna zak or more traditional sounding artists like Eyal Golan/sarit hadad. As far as global artists I'm not really sure who's the biggest honestly I'm a little detached from the culture over here cause its so far removed from what I like and my own very specific musical taste, but sometimes ill hear a Israeli song and go "oh wow that sounds like my thing" on my recent Playlist video I play one example of an Israeli song like that
