    Chad, if you leave that piece in front of the radiator that engine will overheat there is no air circulation for the radiator

    I think you should consider one large gull wing door (as opposed to two smaller doors for a few reasons.
    1) This will make accessing and showing the interior far easier!
    2) This will facilitate work on the engine and allow rapid egress in case of a fire!
    3) One door frame can be much more rigidly framed allowing the use of modern door actuators such as those used to open back doors of SUVs and vans.
    Cool project.

    Hi Chad, Jolene, & Doug, I like the sliding doghouse idea. If you put some insulation on the inside of the skin it would keep the heat down in the truck. I am curious like everyone else, how you plan to get air flow to the radiator. The only way that I see it happening is making a scoop that brings it up from under the truck in front of the radiator and an electric cooling fan would help too. I will just have to wait and see! Doug is really coming along as an assistant he is doing more and moreas time goes by. Jolene you are doing great work as always and you always have such good closeups that one almost forgets that you are there climbing around doing whatever you have to do to get the shot. You guys make quite the team!

    You should make the door and the engine compartment the same opening. That would currently make it 3 panels which would be too wide. But if you can make it 2 sections wide it would give you a wonderful sized door to get in, get the motor out and to get the dog box in/out as well.

      maybe they could build some kind of an air duct underneath the floor behind the driver seat to push cool air into the engine bay but I don't know how that would affect the road handling of the thing and if they plan to sheet the underside of it to reduce drag as much as possible and protect it from rust dust and moisture a bit as well

    • @steves2241
      @steves2241 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disagree, in normal cases you would be right, but the cab will be in front of the engine, not behind it, so I do not think fumes will be a problem. No amount of cooling fans will cool that engine if there is not enough open area for it to get the outside air it needs. As a builder and long time mechanic of more than 52 years I'm telling you that this is NOT going to work, but it doesn't make any difference, it will never see the road long enough to get it hot anyway.

    You have no airflow for cooling Chad, you need to build a airflow tunnel from the grill to the rad then down after the dog house over the trans as doing a flat end on the dog house will course back pressure fouling air flow, it needs to be a smooth transition of air all the way through. Loving it so far

  • @hvac42long1
    @hvac42long1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was under the impression bead rolling is primarily to add rigidity to the metal. Sure it looks good but without it the metal would sound like a drum kit going down the road. All the bends in the materials of a car add strength. Some shape adds beauty but more importantly provide strength to structure. We add cross breaks in air ducting for rigidity. Without it, every time the fan comes on the duct would expand and make banging noise. Then the same when the fan turns off, the duct collapses and makes noise. Anything over 6 inches with 30 gauge sheet metal needs cross break or bead bends for rigidity (strength). It is true these bead rolls being only around the edges will not add as much strength as it would offer with additional bead rolling in the center section of the panel. Several sections of bead rolling in each panel would also look better aside from adding considerably more rigidity or strength.

    Build the Dog House as 2 pieces. A left half and a rIght half, sheet both. Have tabs on the bottom edge of each piece that plug into slots in the floor. Put the passenger side piece in, put the driver side piece in place, and have clamps on the top that locks the top closed. No need to slide, just remove both halves to give greater access to the interior.

    Instead of welding your sheet metal to outer frame, mount it to the square stock and put 2 snap buckles on bottom of each side and 2 snap buckles at top. The 2 on top will hold the 2 sides together while the 2 on each side of bottom will keep it in place. Basically there will be 2 separate pieces of square stock at top that sheet metal will be welded to and will buckle to one another when closed and it comes off with the firewall which will eliminate having to have that piece of square you cut off put back on. It would eliminate having to put wheels on it to and the frame can be welded in place. I hope you understand what I'm writing. Just a thought

    Hey Chad why not make a radiator tunnel tapering up from behind the top of the seat back area to the front of the dog house. Remove the front sheet from the front fixed frame of the dog house giving ample air space to the radiator. This boxes in the floor pan over the axle and brake servo, something that needs to be done anyway. Metal sheet could then be used to box in the gap behind the seats from tunnel to cab floor making a solid metal fire wall keeping safety to a max. As long as you can force enough air over the engine it will flow out and away from the engine just as it would with any dog house cover fitted in utility vehicles. Two decent electric fans could do this easy. A little flap door could be fitted beside the brake servo too to gain access for master cylinder/ servo repairs when needed. That's probably the way id go. Great so see real artistry from you and your queen. Keep it up and keep moving forward. Peace.

HVAC flexible or steel fab ductwork is a possibility in and out the doghouse. Some cars had deflectors on the bottom to push air up through the radiator. Having your door and doorway built would be a really good thing to do now so in the future things would help in future parts of the build. It would be in your best interest to make it wide enough to make it bg enough just in case you need to have the dog house so it could come out in case you need to make it easier to work on the engine. It's always easier to plan ahead instead of leaving it to chance. Of course it's up to you ...... !!!! The door and door way need to be figured out sooner than later though.. Mr heffy l apologize to offend you.l read allot of titles given to chad.He has skills to get out of predicaments he gets himself into he really amazes me how he does this however I think of a coach builder as someone who is proficient in using English wheels,sprinklers and stretchers. I don't think he even has beanbag and mallet. Don't get me wrong he is very talented I think coach builder's have different kind of skills. If you want to go to a dictionary you are completely right . Again if I offended you I apologize

    Hey listen make it in two pieces bottom with the rollers then the top ( hood) bolt it or latch it you will need to be able to get it out if need be I know it’s more metal but it’s important

    You could bolt the center beam on and run two piano hinges on either side of the center beam that hinge down and latch at the bottom like model T hood but rounded. Then you would be able to disassemble the whole dog house and take it out of your back hatch if needed

    You need too ditch the fan clutch and only use large radiator cooling fans. You can’t use them both. A large ram air roof intake and a exhaust vent to the rear may help. You also need a transmission cooler with s electric fan.👌

    Chad / Hinge down the center of the dog house like the old hoods and hinge the passenger side so the unit folds away from the engine and you will need better air flow for the radiator, unit will overheat in stop and go traffic

    Van engine covers are air tight. How will a cover that rolls on skate wheels be air tight and prevent fumes from entering???
