Morning, as a FEIN drone we wanted thank you for posting the video. It's rare that anyone that works in the manufacturing sector really knows what the inside of their products look like, so this has been a real education. You make some great points based on your investigations, some based on fact some based on hypotheses, but all valid opinions.
The sticker thing, we 100% agree with and will be re-feeding back into the manufacturing team. The tools are completed by hand in our factory in Germany so this should be an easy fix. As for the giveaway, this was unfortunate but we will stay clear in the future - it was one of those 'trying to helpful' but ended up being less helpful moments.

Hey AvE, The company I work for has 20 or so of these Fein machines and it falls to me to do the repairs. You were on the right track to remove the armature, use the heat and tap method. You use a heat gun to apply a little calorific excitation to that fine chunk of cast aluminium and then tap the case down against the vise jaws. The armature will pop right out. I believe they are installed that way to keep the vibration form tearing up that aluminium piece the armature bearing is mounted in.
Every time I pull up your videos and think "35 minutes, damn it". Then I try to skip around and miss something so I go back and it ends up taking me 45-50 minutes to get through it. You are a master of continual captivation my friend, keep up the great work!
AvE, the person in industry who "took you to task" was half right and you were as well. The PA (Polyamide or Nylon) is in fact "filled" with glass fiber, how ever the glass fiber is acting as the reinforcement and the polymer is the matrix, you're absolutely correct when saying "glass fiber reinforced" and should continue to do so. In industry, the term filler is commonly used to refer to a cheap substance, ie calcium carbonate, saw dust etc. that does not typicaly enhance physical properties.

Why does it only go to 6 instead of 11? Because 6 in German is Sechs. Which is super similar to the English word "sex". The German word for 11 is Elf. No one wants a tool that has a max speed of Elf.

I've been watching AvE videos for about a year now and I think this my favorite one.I don't know if I'm just drunk or what. But he's doing his usual bumblefucking in the garage but this one he has clips of his kid. She seems like a great kid and I get the impression he's a great dad. And then he goes right back to swearing and hitting things with a hammer. You're the best man, don't change a fuckin' thing. Wish there were more people like you.
I like this guy's narration. His reaction to shock and alarm are priceless. He's also a very astute and witty guy, which makes watching a 34+ minute video a breeze. I also needn't dismantle my Fein due to this guy's inquisitive nature.
I heard you comment on the clamping connectors they used to connect the power cord and I thought to share some connector design knowledge and explain why they made a perfect choice using the spring loaded clamping terminals.
Although you naturally would feel that screw terminals are a better choice because you can tighten them down really hard they are actually the worst connectors you could choose from. The absolute wire termination force on a wire connection is totally irrelevant. The problem with screw terminals is that they are not flexible. Over time and without exception screw terminal connections will eventually loosen up due to micro movements caused by temp cycles and vibration. Subsequently, the space formed between the wire and terminal will slowly fill up with oxides and this will result in an increasing connection resistance and eventually will cause connection failure.
Spring loaded terminals on the other hand are keeping a constant pressure on the contact area and, as a matter of speaking, are 'refreshing' the contact area continuously in harsh conditions. Spring loaded clamping connectors are even known for their ability to decrease contact resistance over time. A perfect connector choice for this application.
Springs do fail even in decent environments. I have seen 2 in about 100 on industrial equipment approximately 5 years old of this kind. Seasonal heating and cooling no real debris to speak of. One is was some kind of follower unseating allowing a wobbly connection, not a complete failure and the other was a broken spring. The connector in this one is better than the lifting type. I have seen many more broken lifting mechanisms probably because they have been installed any which way. Technicians just pulling back and forth with a tweaker before looking. Worse off is from broken plastic during prying. The plastic that is broken always seems to be the isolation between two terminals and sometimes signals start crossing.
Not really too bad when I go through and fasten a good 70 - 100 screw connections for the gremlins in a machine much more often.

I bought my Fein in the late 90's when their patent was still intact. It is still going strong, like the man says, it is only good for one or two jobs but for those jobs, there is nothing better. Actually there isn't anything at all other than a multi tool.

I did indeed, that is actually an impressive amount of work.
to gain access to the inner parts of the oscillating mechanism, first remove the tool change handle. Drive out the pin. on top you can now access a retaining clip. remove the clip and hammer out the shaft. this will give access to the inner workings.
It is called a MultiTool because it can take many different tools that fit the arbor to do either cutting, scraping, grinding, sanding and such like. My Fein MultiTool is my get out of jail tool for awkward jobs no other tool can do or get too! Great video and very interesting!
I worked at a car company, and one of my jobs was putting cert labels on. Even on a 30 - 80 thousand dollar car, they are put on by hand.

I just watched your video 'cause my housemate loves your language. I noted that since these tools use modified scotch yokes gearboxes, it sure looks from the schematic that the motor is simply press-fit into the gearbox with the idling yoke bearing held onto the motor's arbor with friction and a circlip. I see part #270 as the obvious motor arbor main bearing, 280 as the gearbox sealing parts, 300 as the yoke bearing, and 310 as the circlip. The whole motor arbor is simple press fit into the housing via the main bearing's friction on the motor arbor and the gearbox housing.

I bought this beauty today, actually a newer model without that pin for clamping the attachment and I gotta say it's was a love at the first sight. I don't know if they did any improvements on shock absorbing, but I can barely feel any vibrations in my hands at max rpms. It just carvs through anything like nothing.

About what you were saying at the start, I had the same issue with vibration when I tried one of these Fein ones. I ended up getting a Makita 18v version as it was said by a few people online to be the lowest vibration and noise compared to most others. The difference is pretty huge.
I only use it about once a month, but when it's needed i find it useful, great for cutting in tight corners.

My parents used to buy me clocks to take apart so I wouldn't ruin stuff at the house. This led to my first paid job where I worked 12 hours a day pumping gas at my dads shop. As a 12 year old working your entire summer vacation, you learn the value of the ten bucks you were paid for a full day elbow deep in solvent and covered in grease from sorting bolts. I loved it. I’m a general contractor and do mostly interior residential remodel. Lots of trim and detailed “retrofitting “. I have put enough hours on a Fein to file suit for hearing loss. And that’s my main complaint with them, the older ones like mine at least, are LOUD!
jessepitt I hate that tool. Spent 10 hours a day for a month cutting out caulk on expansion jts and pre cast jts. My hands would feel like they were still vibrating that night. And so loud. Blades were expensive as well. But did cut the caulk out quickly

Nice vageo, quite the enrichment of your english vocabulair. About this fein tool. They are durable, at a previous job a fein supercut was bought in 2000 and it ran over a decade every week day for a few hours sawing through carbonfibre reinforced epoxy composites. Only once or twice it needed repair, shortcircuit on the electronics by small conducting carbonfibres. Seen the lifespan i think that is a achievement. Anyway thanks for the video's and sharing!

Have you heard about the Global Village Construction Set? They're trying to create a whole array of open source designs, with the goal of being able to bootstrap the whole system. They still have a very long way to go, but they have some cool modular designs already, and it's all designed to be not only servicable by the owner, but actually made from raw materials.

Awesome, love your videos. I also like the metal tags, a couple of Fein tools I have lost the stickers and it can be a challenge to figure out the model. Never taken apart a Fein model that new, I suspect that you need to put a bearing puller on the screw used to hole the blades down, which should pull the drive shaft assembly out.

A couple years ago I submitted a proposal to design a modular, programmable, wirelessly-charged vibrator. That project never got off the ground, and a functionally similar (if superficially very different) product now shares its name. But it would have made for a fun teardown.

I'm one of those persons who has deep seated fear of "the dancing pixies" and almost none existent knowledge of schematics, but from watching your "V-joes" with all your attention to detail and patience in explaining the basics of how motors, AC/DC fundamentals, hydraulics, etc i am learning things that i've always wanted to lean. The one thing that i wanted to for awhile now contribute monetarily but the site that you use only excepts a donation on a monthly basis and I would prefer to donate a lump sum from time to time. Now I want an AvE commentary/rant to a EEVBlog teardown.
Spring clamping cable terminals are industrial standarad... actually screw terminals are mostly prohibited for mains voltage.Screw terminal has high clamping force, but for how long? A day? Then everything settle, mostly cables because of deformation and all clamping force is gone, completly gone and cable is holding only because of local deformation from screw. At other hand the spring clamp maintains most of its clamping force for decades and also presence of force pushing on the cable prevents forming of thick oxidation layer on cable / contact!
Jakub Bendzala Spring clamp terminal strips are the norm for control voltages in industry. You don't find spring clamping in the USA at the 208VAC+ level.
Man, I wish I could give you a gazillion likes for the commentary about the modern machinery being a bunch of over-complicated crap. I got a fair amount of machinery and have pretty much pulled the electronics where possible and went old school. Way less problems trouble shooting and fixing things later.
AvE, regarding the spring loaded connectors and the comments below abute the aussies requiring them on vibrating equipment. when i wuz working locomotives decades ago, the only thing i found that wouldn't loosen up after a few months of violent shaking that those things do was a spring loaded connector when used with ferrels. the ones i happened to be using were the wago ones that required a little screwdriver of something jammed into it to release the spring. they usually heald so well the wire would break and leave the ferrel behind in the clamp. after using those for a few years i am totally sold on them and use the like whenever i can now. just to be clear i am not talking abute the ones where you stab in the wire, those fail under any real current. the spring or lever release connectors are where its at, so far i have yet to see a failure with them.

On the other side, I would say a screw terminal may be prone to unscrew after long exposure to vibrations, while a strong spring loaded terminal will always have the spring pressure.
Also, under thermal cycling, the screw can stretch and lose clamping force while the spring tension is constant albeit lower than the screw starts out.
Agreed. Personally, I've had many screw terminals fail on me. The way it happens is usually that the screw shears off the wire, or the wire fails when being twisted. Granted, tinning the tips helps, but it's definitely not an infallible system.

Monkeh Screwing it in does create a depression, if that's what you mean, but I stand by it being more reliable in my experience for screw terminals.
msylvain59 Government sites in Australia that I have worked on (I won't specify which) require spring cage terminals wherever possible, because of precisely that reason. Vibration etc will not affect the quality of the connection.

I love my multimaster. Used the dewalt, milwaukee, dremel and other forgotten cheap named brands. This thing whoops ass. Blades are strong and it's hilarious when someone who isn't familiar with star lock tries to use it then I show them how easy blades come off and usually I get an awe inspiring "dang..." Get one if you use them often. Buy once cry once for sure

I can confirmed that we can not buy the computer programs needed to properly diagnose our equipment which costs close to $500k for a single USED combine! There are ppl who have illegal copies of those programs, however when the dealer is an hour drive away, and in the middle of harvest when everyone within a 300 km radius needs the service tech to come hook up his computer aswell, and only to tell you its a stupid $10 sensor (not actually $10...) it costs you more in drive time then the actual service call itself!
Company I worked for had ONE, so it was switched from crew to crew depending on who was in the greatest need. Needless to say, it was used to hell and back quickly but still outlasted a great many other name brand tools. When it started acting up it was one of the few tools so handy, that I attempted to fix it in field. The tension on the push pin clamps is fine for the application. The vibration actually made the wire itself fail. Due to the clamping method used it was hands down the fastest in field fix ever. Great tool.

I own this tool. Here is a tip. Fein also makes the best blades. Try the "long life" variety. Don't waste your money buying another brand.

Hi AvE, Love the videos. I actually pulled one of those out of a dumpster from a repair center and the oscillating mechanism was busted. So when you say it will likely be the switch or cord that fail, I found this tool where the oscillation mechanism was busted... just interesting. I'll see if I still have the thing so I can cut it open and see how it was assembled. Cause it stumped me too.

I was able to tour the Fein factory some 30 years ago, and their workmanship and attention to detail was impressive even then.
