      Brendan O'Neill is consistently wrong.
      His career strategy is to latch onto controversy and throw some platitude-shaped bones at the most rabid dog in the room.

    14:20 - why does this affect not only Israel but western civilization?
    Because the response to Oct 7th has shown how deeply people in "the West" need and crave identity, so much so that they are willing make Jihadist propaganda a big part of it.
    But why?
    I see people protesting and as an Israeli I ask myself, why are they not being more critical? can they not see they are spewing male-honor and chauvinistic rhetoric, never mind AS? do they not care they are ignorant?
    One explanation to this willful ignorance is that the conflict is very complicated and its history at least a century old, so that's a barrier for some.
    And of course, ignorance is not missing on the pro-Israel side, but it's far less predominant imho.
    To me these were not a sufficient answer to explain the scale of this cognitive dissonance, so I asked myself what my psychologist taught me many years ago - she suggested I ask what is the psychological profit (of staying ignorant)?
    And then it occurred to me, it's an identity ritual.
    People form their identity by saying and believing "Israel is evil" and by going to Jihadist rallies, an identity pilgrimage of sort, identity is their profit!
    Much has been written about the crisis of meaning and identity in the west, from Nietzsche and Kirkegaard to Douglas Murray, and it occurs to me these new rituals are how the new religion worships.
    That woke-ism or some elements of progressivism are a form of new religion is also, of course, nothing new, but seeing the protests and rhetoric in this light really made a lot of sense to me, religions have rituals and myths and here a new rituals and mythology are being created in front of our eyes.
    For one, it explains the cognitive dissonance very well, people stay ignorant because they fear (or know deep down) that if they let critical thinking in the ritual will no longer work, they will not get the identity high they're used to. So, they let in only the information they want, and I believe this is largely unconscious.
    So, to answer the question (that I was not asked):
    It's important to western civilization because the response to Oct 7th shows that people crave and want identity and the West's failure to provide rituals and mythology to fulfill this need is causing people to desperately look for it elsewhere, anywhere, even in dangerous suicidal places like Jihadist propaganda.

      How do you square the absolute blatant violations of the 4th Geneva Convention for many years that Israel as a signatory and ratifier party must abide by, and various other parts of customary international law with this is any way being about "western civilization" and not Israel?

    • @AvnerSenderowicz
      @AvnerSenderowicz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@FlyingVolvo By people believing what they want to - a-priory - and thus not thinking critically.
      Let's take undisputed numbers:
      45K dead in Gaza - this by Hamas' own estimate
      16K of these are combatants according to US estimate (Israel estimate 20K)
      that's 3 civilians to every 1 combatant - in one of the most densely populated areas of the world and with terrorists who actively and by own admission hide behind and under civilians.
      Even if we say US estimate is wrong, we can assume only 10K are Hamas combatants just to make a worse-case scenario for ourselves to remove any doubt, that's 4.5 to 1
      Now of course, every civilian death is a tragedy, in particular of children, but can you see that something doesn't add up?
      Even by Hamas own numbers and taking worst case estimates.
      A more honest calculation not accepting Hamas for their word and factoring in a few thousand dead from natural causes over the course over a year - would bring us closer to 2:1 - but it's good to take the worst case and show how even that is not consistent with Israel targeting civilians.
      And we can observe the civilian deaths in this conflict are actually remarkably low - in fact, considering the location and conditions in which this war takes place, it indicates the exact opposite.
      So, we have all these so-called reports on one side - which are opinions or analysis of people saying Israel is doing X and Y (infringing on Geneva conventions, targeting civilians, genocide, etc) - but the numbers contradict this, and numbers are from Hamas itself.
      The cognitive dissonance is not wanting to see this and ask the questions that will come after - because it will ruin the nice feeling of being a moral person every time someone rages about Israel (aka the identify ritual).
      Very similar to how most people don't like to hear that separating trash into color coded trash bin doesn't really help save the environment.

    • @FlyingVolvo
      @FlyingVolvo 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AvnerSenderowicz The 4th Geneva Convention has nothing to do with numbers of X amount of people having been killed. It's got far more to do with for example the legal obligations that Israel has as a occupying power like not allowing population transfers or annexation of territory.

    • @AvnerSenderowicz
      @AvnerSenderowicz 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FlyingVolvo Yes, my mistake, I am sorry.
      The short answer is that this a legitimate criticism of Israel.
      Of course, there are answers to this criticism - like the fact that the conventions envision that wars end, however the war in this region are never ending, creating a situation where Israel cannot give the disputed areas to Palestinian state, not for lack of trying mind you, nor can it completely take over and annex 2m, largely hostile, Palestinians. This would be national suicide.
      But yeah, things are complicated, and Israel is certainly not without faults, that's totally valid criticism - assuming this is what you mean.
      But if someone goes on to suggest this makes it OK to commit terror against Israel and Israeli civilians - that would be the cognitive dissonance I was talking about.

    This is a completely Trumpy podcast. They constantly bend over backwards excusing that guy's terrible behavior and having guests like this idiot who thinks Trump is an irreverent breath of fresh air. The worst part is rather than acknowledging their stance, they take the gutless spineless position and say "I'm not voting" etc. That attitude is, in my view, the lowest of all.

    I’m sorry, I love the program, and I Probably will agree on his stand on Jihad and Israel, but the amount of garbage coming if his mouth about Biden and Kamala… don’t do that if you don’t know what you are talking about. It’s all speculation that coming from his own biases… if that the way he is on the show, how can we trust his book?

       I love this show because of Noam. He is very articulate on Israel & question of Antisemitism, I will probably forever watch him. Yet, I do think it's odd that Noam sees through the mutual legitimization game of today's protofascist influencer class so easily yet in his show their catchphrases like "wokeism", conspiracy-aligned tropes like a scheming "elite" & the obsessive overemphasis of the trans-issue are bandied about and taken as writ constantly by him and the friends he invites..

    • @joge2468
      @joge2468 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@timidtom “Wokeism” is simply a place-holder for “post-modernist, post-colonialist, Marxism-adjacent ideology,” which is pretty unwieldy. I’m with you on the whole “elites” thing, given that massive numbers of kids who attend what are essentially open-enrollment universities have embraced this ideology.
      I’m likewise obsessed with the trans-issue. I would argue for being obsessed with it because it represents the movement of wokeism out of the academic/theoretical realm into the physical realm. Bad ideas can be tolerated. Bad actions cannot. Children are being mutilated, their fertility and ability to experience orgasm stolen from them. It’s a bridge way too far.

    The Left didn't say it's good to judge people by their skin color. The Left said to not ignore skin color because there's a social reality difference based on skin color and when we ignore this we don't understand how society operates unfairly based on skin color. It's like being told to not stop making a big deal about being Jewish, while the world is antisemitic and Jews are extremely vulnerable right now.

      But I think in the dumbing down process of mass dissemination it's turned into something like the 1619 project, i.e. making one's racial identity indelible - something akin to original sin; once guilty, always guilty. Similarly: once maligned; always maligned. Frankly, something that worries me is how popular Palestinian talking points/tactics are with certain lefty African American groups. I can imagine some homegrown militia groups starting based on the same basic principle of perpetual revenge.

    • @AbstractLaw
      @AbstractLaw 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it's more like those of us who are white benefit from what happened historically. It's not our fault that history played out this way but we have certain advantages as a result. It's nothing to feel guilty or ashamed of, just to be mindful and try to make things more fair. Unfortunately the conversations around this haven't had the right amount of time and space for people to truly listen to one another. And it's difficult to hear when filled with so much reactivity from everyone.
      I think many Black activists have identified with the Palestinians, equating their experience in South Africa and the U.S. to what Palestinians experience. Unfortunately again there's not enough space for dialogue and understanding. Everyone just wants to fight and join the war rather than build peace.
