My dad may have given me the best gift I've ever received for Christmas this year. I didn't ask for anything and he just gave me a cheap djembe and I gotta tell you I'm obsessed with its beauty. Buy yourself a djembe and practice a little and come back to this video and start jamming with these guys. I was smiling the whole damn time! Djembe's are pure fun! Get one.

I love these guys!!!! My Dad (who played with Babatunde Olatunji) & my brother played the drums while Nana and I danced 60 yrs ago. I still dance a little but I love playing the drums now. Thank you fellas for sharing and bringing back beautiful memories.
I see that a lot in African musicians, they smile while making beats. They seem to have a lot more fun than a lot of the western players, they are so serious.
Agreed to both of you. I feel Western music tends to be more composition heavy, while Eastern music tends to be more improvised. Neither are wrong. Just a different feeling. That said, people who make African music do seem to smile a lot. I like that. Music should be fun.
These guys are good. Very good, but believe me..... you will be spellbound if you hear some of the drumming all over West Africa... particularly Ghana/Nigeria .... direct spiritual contact with your ancient ancestors.

The polyrythms are like language, they have regional accents even. I own several drums and play, but as a hobby, I'm often asked to play, even though I consider myself very amateur. I think it's obvious why it's gaining popularity, your heart beats, drums are beat to rythm too. I was told, drumming is like walking. People who can't physically walk [includes me now] have the same body rythm too. If you don't have rythym in you body, you're dead. I could have played along with this some years ago, but can't now, doesn't mean it doesn't have the same vibe if you buy the 800w speaker and sit on it ... EVERYTHING IS A DRUM

Traditional Malinke rhythms with the Djembe player's own creativity and flavor. That's the beauty of the Djembe... play as you like as long as you sync with the base rhythm.
When I was 12 I got sent to an alternative school and every day my class would go to music room and have really long jam sessions with djembes and shakers and just about anything else we could find. We would even play in the courtyard when it was nice out and we played at graduations also. Good times!

African rhythms percolated all the way through from slave music, to calypso, to jazz, to rock, to funk, to hip hop. But if you asked a traditionally trained Indian musician who didn't have much exposure to other types of music, they probably wouldn't feel as familiar to that musician. Attributing this to collective consciousness misses a whole history of systematic appropriation.

That is awesome! I would actually hope for a long wait for my train or wait for another just to listen to these guys play for awhile! If this stuff doesn't make you feel something deep down in your soul then you are a robot. Drums are the first instruments ever created and goes to the very core of who we are. If you think about a concert when a drummer does a big drum solo you will understand what I mean. Everyone is always transfixed on that drummer and they'll start swaying or rocking back and forth, before you know it people are spinning in circles and other primal/tribal type movements. Its in all of us no matter your ethnicity, race or whatever because it goes back to a time when all people lived in the same way with very similar beliefs. I thank the old gods that some of the people in this world kept with those traditions and we can still experience the feelings from those long gone days when humans lived as we were intended. At one with the world and creatures around us.

Some people might not like this music because its "basic" but that's the exact reason why I like it. Getting back to the base/foundation/roots, this is how people connected with themselves, eachother, the universe and the rhythm of life.
@@ahfei6847 I agree I have a Djembe , she is named ' The Empress' . Many of the rhythms I play are very complicated . I can assure you that keeping up together in rhythm as these drummers are doing here is not easy.
I guess I didn't really use the best words, I meant basic as in the instrument design is more simple and traditional. Basic is basically modern slang developed to insult the traditional. I don't think it's basic, but traditional and simple in its own way. I get the part where complicated techniques are used to get the varying sounds on a simpler instrument design.
I've been to drum circles with many more people and Outdoors but in areas with good acoustics which were great but to hear just the three of them in the subway must be amazing

I consider my iPhone to be an invaluable gift and a true piece of art in itself. The net result of hundreds of millions of dollars and millions upon millions of man-hours to make. 15 years ago you couldn't of owner such a device for $1 billion.

First class , that's the african culture and spirit , rhythm is all around us , we just don't feel it anymore which is very sad , life = rhythm , music and not greed , hate and envy like these days , take a close look and you can see the joy in the drummers faces while doing what they love

Some people might not like this music because its "basic" but that's the exact reason why I like it. Getting back to the base/foundation/roots, this is how people connected with themselves, eachother, the universe and the rhythm of life.

@@ahfei6847 I agree I have a Djembe , she is named ' The Empress' . Many of the rhythms I play are very complicated . I can assure you that keeping up together in rhythm as these drummers are doing here is not easy.
No basic whatsoever. Been playing djembes and djun drums for more than a decade and developing good slap/tone separation is no joke.
I guess I didn't really use the best words, I meant basic as in the instrument design is more simple and traditional. Basic is basically modern slang developed to insult the traditional. I don't think it's basic, but traditional and simple in its own way. I get the part where complicated techniques are used to get the varying sounds on a simpler instrument design.

I've been to drum circles with many more people and Outdoors but in areas with good acoustics which were great but to hear just the three of them in the subway must be amazing

The original masters of the rhythm and boom played in the bush not in the booth ! These men are amazing . Some of the best shows ever seen on Earth are played in Paris subways for free.
