I love this rating system! Great for learning about the conditions as a “might ride in winter” viewer and I can also see this as great education for the city to understand what the needs are in the winter for riders!
Loved this video! As a first timer cycling in the winter, 100% agree that getting out of my neighbourhood is the toughest part of my commute. Packed ice until I hit the river path. I’m so grateful that my work commute connects to the river path. No studded tires as of now, and no falls so far so I’m definitely looking forward to trying out studded tires!
@ tested them out on Saturday during the snow storm so they didn’t really make a difference! 🤣 haven’t had a chance to really test them out just yet, but looking forward to it soon!
i commute all year from mardaloop to the chinook mall. i use the sidewalks, hoping people have shoveled the day of the snow fall and not after tons of people have walked on it turning the snow into ice. i havent put a studded front tire yet but i think i should since front tire slide outs have led to falls on the road and sidewalks. i would rate my route green all the way in the summer, it changes to blue most of the way and black diamond along macloed trail if there is ice.
Love watching this & seeing how you handle this stuff. It'd be fun to do some winter riding examples on other bikes too ( ie. If you ever wanted to borrow our UA once the studs are on it to show what it's like - I'd be game to collab! haha. Let's get more families on bikes! ).
Thanks as always Sean - more winter biking videos please. Would love to see some winter maintenance and gear tips!
Yep, lots more winter riding content coming!

Hows the riding going now that you've got some studded tires installed?

Great video! Love the ski hill analogy. Something many Calgarians are able to relate to.
Glad you enjoyed the comparison.

Lovely video , thank you
My Winter bike kit tip is for every 10F degrees below 50F add another breathable layer and assume an extra 10F colder when its windy.
Watching this in front of a fireplace in North Carolina decided not to ride bc it was 31 degrees this morning. I feel really bad. lol I’m a coward.
Close to freezing and rain is THE WORST weather - way worse than colder and snow for sure.
