Note the minimal wrist action at finish…..and fingers loose on leading hand during recoveryi. Interesting re the minimal straight arm time at catch? Thanks to Chuter for amazing cine bequeathed for us 60’s amateurs!
Yes he push’s down but rolls the handles rather than grips them and twisting. This is rare and few scullers managed this at this time but it was definitely the way to go
Super strong upper body to take that strain over the first part of the stroke. May struggle with today's equipment as alot stiffer sculls not as forgiving. But no wonder I got nowhere near him when I raced
Certainly "non-standard", and it would not fly today, where there is so much more refinement by video-assisted coaching to get the maximum from the legs. .... but You have to register how strong and how super-efficient his lower back movement is to appreciate what he was doing to be one of the best scullers in the world in his best years. Amazing hands movement/ blade work. Inspirational.

Two fundamental mistakes: taking the catch with bent arms and lifting the upper body at the catch.

Agree however plenty of so called scullers and TH-cam rowers still use this to their detriment
