- the 1977 New York Yankees against the backdrop of New York City. Yankee superstar Reggie Jackson (Daniel Sunjata) and manager Billy Martin (John Turturro) are locked in a perpetual state of warfare. Jackson was a perfect foil for the scrappy Martin, a popular former Yankee player and reminder of the less complicated past of the team and the city. While owner George Steinbrenner (Oliver Platt) was a autocratic boss, he was also intent on keeping his promise to delivering a World Series title. The show also features subplots concerning the NYPD's pursuit of the Son of Sam serial killer that summer and the devastating blackout and resultant widespread looting in July, all while the city suffered through financial bankruptcy and massive municipal layoffs. Another subplot focused on the 1977 New York City Mayoral race featuring incumbent mayor Abraham Beame, former Congresswoman Bella Abzug, future Governor Mario Cuomo, and Congressman Ed Koch, the eventual winner.
there are 4 spots with dead audio where 4 Ramones songs had to be removed to prevent the video from being blocked worldwide.
Would it be possible to put subtitles there where the sound is down?
there isn't much dialogue and what there is isn't very significant. you're really not missing much.

The fight with Brett & Nettles was classic......no one got thrown out or fined etc.....baseball was great.
I don't care how much this series disparages Billy Martin, I will always have Billy as my favorite manager.
it fairly portrayed Martin. Showed his brilliant managing, as well as his flaws. Certainly did not portray Steinbrenner favorably but was accurate. Same with Jackson and his arrogance

Always worth repeating what George Will said in Ken Burns' great Baseball documentary: millions of people each year pay to attend baseball games--not one of them goes to see an owner....
George Will is a communist who doesn't know anything about baseball.
@@DaveDaShrubber Dave, George Will is 81 and has been a Cubs fan since he was a kid; along with numerous essays and articles, he wrote a fine book about baseball called Men at Work: the Craft of Baseball; and has been featured prominently in Ken Burns Baseball documentaries. To say he. knows a lot about baseball would be quite an understatement.

Gura was a Yankee in '75-'76. Martin considered Gura to be gutless, so Gura got traded to Kansas City for Fran Healy. Gura went on to win 117 games for the Royals, and Healy, well, he was a good friend to Reggie.
I love it when John Turturro plays Billy Martin and I love it when he argues with the umpire just like Billy Martin. I also love it when John says: _"Shalom!"_ at 15:28. I say _"Shalom!"_ too.
I forgot that Herzog also managed the Royals. But as we all know, he made himself famous managing the other Missouri team
It should be pointed out that Reggie's numbers versus Splittorff career wise weren't that bad. He had hit about .265 in his career against him till that point and had even homered off him in 77. The problem was Reggie wasn't swinging well in the series, he was a lefty-hitter and Blair was righty, he was a far inferior outfielder to Blair, especially on artificial turf (Blair was probably the best defensive outfielder in the majors), but most important of all were Blair's numbers versus Splittorff. He had a career batting average of about .420 against him up till that point. Billy made the right move.

Great quality despite the dead spots, which is not the fault of the one posting-indeed it shows sophistication and ingenuity to get past “Big Content Controller.” One of my all time favorite baseball movies- with great editing, interspersing taped footage of the actual games with the drama in the dugout.

Gullett did make it back for the WS, almost pitched a CG in Game 1 of the series, then he got shelled in Game 5, and after July of 1978 he never pitched again. He could have been a HOF but arm problems derailed him.

I'm a guy who wishes pitchers nowadays could go deeper into games like they used to, but I will admit the flip side to that could be Billy Martin. Guy just seemed to run pitchers into the ground, from Gullett and Catfish with the Yankees to the likes of Rick Langford and Mike Norris in Oakland.

Fran Healey is the closest thing to an adult on the Yankees.
As far as sports TV movies/series go, Turturro was much better here as Billy Martin than he was as Cosell in MNM, he never captured Howard's "essence," tho not an easy thing to do, admittedly.

It happened
I never heard that, but I remember a fight between Nettles and Jackson at a restaurant after they beat Oakland in the playoffs in 1981. Those teams had so many characters.

And Blair wasn't subbed in for Reggie until the top of the 9th, with the Yankees ahead 6-2.

The pressure was really on old Reggie, big star not hitting at all in the playoffs is a dark hole right between the eyes, I’ve seen it, like being on stage in front of thousands of people and forget the words of the song.

you'll have to research the NY paper's archives. i know the times has an online archive. the News and the Post might be behind a paywall somewhere. even if he said it to other reporters, the Times might have articles from the time that reference those quotes.

Time stamp kind of post. President Carter had just recently gone into hospice. I am old enough to barely remember his last years in office. He wasn’t my favorite President in what I’ve learned about his economic policy. But I do believe he was a genuine good person and watching the clips of him looking at the blight- and what he did after office with habitats for humanity- hits me right in the feels.
