Nice shout out to the Disney platformers, there are so many! Aladdin on Genesis, Tarzan on PS1, you could make a whole separate list of these. *cough hint cough*
Great list! Although they are more on the 'Metroidvania' side of things, I would like to recommend the Guacamelee! games, The Messenger and ICEY. All three are amazing 2D platformers!
"Freedom Planet" definitely deserves a spot on such a list because of it being based heavily around the 16-bit style Sonic games, especially before "Sonic Mania" was even released, and it also happens to be my most favorite indie game title of all time due to its colorful graphics, tight responsive gameplay, amazing soundtrack, and cast of characters that are both appealing and cute.
A fantastic list of great games. I'd throw in the (seemingly) underappreciated Teslagrad and Iconoclasts. Both are fun to play through and perfectly mix puzzling with platforming.
Great list, I would rank them differently though I also changed the entrance from 3 series and replaced rocket knight because I never played it 1 - Ori and the Blind Forest 2 - Rayman Origins* 3 - Braid 4 - Celeste 5 - Limbo 6 - Rogue Legends 7 - Sonic Mania* 8 - Super Meat Boy 9 - Spelunky 10 - Aladdin* (Genesis)
Ori and the blind forest is fantastic. Best platformer I have ever played and one of the best games as well. Will of the wisps is also good, but blind forest is the better out of the two.
I'm surprised Will Of The Wisps wasn't on here, but some other great games are Tropical Freeze,Donkey Kong Country 2,and Mega Man Zero 3 Zero 3 is one of the best action platformers I ever played I would put it above even Mega Man X.
Okay... 'limbo' but no 'inside'... thats a bit of a disappointment. Sure, limbo is a very good game, but inside... is the best these story driven sidescrollers can be... The rest of the list is great keep up the good work!
most modern platformers are not fun at all imo they're just obsessed with being difficult just to be difficult and always present themselves so pretentiously. Just give me a DK Country or Mario World. cuphead and meat boy and etc, I just don't see the appeal
Sorry but Sonic 3 & Knuckles was wayyyyy better than Sonic 2 in just about every way. Not saying Sonic 2 is bad at all though but Sonic 3 even on its own was so great at the time
It turns out that mountains have tons of berries of different varieties. If you are looking to compare a mountain with a video game think open world x 1000.
@@LookItsMrT Among intellectuals yes maybe, but what can one expect from today's youth. Not willing to be boomer but they hardly know anything besides of the top trending games, almost all of which are multiplayer. So yeah it's a problem many of them dont even give a f%=k about games like these
Are you guys friends with Simon anymore? I ask because you always use his face whenever you make a "... or such-and-such if you wanna get such-and-such about it" joke. I don't even know if he's still at What Culture, I was just curious.

Lion king on genesis/snes also. One of my favorites
Will of the Wisps was my goty 2020 and probably my favourite metroidvania of all time.
I live on Vancouver Island, and I had no idea we had a "Mt. Celeste"!
Speaking of the spiky blue hedgehog, Every Sonic Game Ranked from Worst to Best would be a great video to watch.
Would it?
Great list! Although they are more on the 'Metroidvania' side of things, I would like to recommend the Guacamelee! games, The Messenger and ICEY. All three are amazing 2D platformers!
ICEY is more of a 2D hack and slash
How can you do a list like this and not include Shovel Knight!?!?
Seriously wish Tarzan and Hercules were included in that Disney classics game collection released the last couple years. Such fond memories!
Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is fantastic.
This times one beelion
Certainly is. Loved the overworld and the brilliant soundtrack as well. 👍👍
I'm starting to see a trend
"cat bunny thing"
Finally, a good description of what carbuncle from final fantasy is
No dust: an elysian trail I see. I'd highly recommend that game. Near perfect
Ori is THE ONE! I'd advise anyone to play them.
AL GORES RHYTHMS
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best of the classic Sonic series.
I recently discovered "the adventure of little Ralph", a brutal 2d platform game only released in Japan for the PS1. Worth looking into.
Okay the “if you wanna get American about this “ bit made me spit my drink out 😂 he didn’t even try and say it and warped it too funny 😂 good one ☝️
Great list, I would rank them differently though
I also changed the entrance from 3 series and replaced rocket knight because I never played it
1 - Ori and the Blind Forest
2 - Rayman Origins*
3 - Braid
4 - Celeste
5 - Limbo
6 - Rogue Legends
7 - Sonic Mania*
8 - Super Meat Boy
9 - Spelunky
10 - Aladdin* (Genesis)
I've never played Castle of Illusion but we had World of Illusion and I used to play that all the time.
Also Rocket Knight Adventures is soo good
The co-op in WoI was fun
@@IdleRain so much helping each other up ledges and accidentally hitting each other with magic lol
Very good list!
Reminds me that as a kid I used to love a really often forgotten series called James Pond ... good times
I can't believe that Ori ended up outside Top 3! The bash mechanics alone is just incredible and the person who created it should get a reward.
💯💯💯and don't forget that sequel too.
Ori and the blind forest is fantastic. Best platformer I have ever played and one of the best games as well. Will of the wisps is also good, but blind forest is the better out of the two.
Still waiting on Braid remaster 😞
I've just played Rocket Knight Adventure 2 this morning… then I watch your video with the first game in it ! Nice synchronization !
Love the list! Im surprised Hollow Knight didnt make it
The Simon impression kills me every time🤣
Whoa Sonic 2 got first place. Superb! Can't beat a bit of Hill Top Zone. I bought The Sega Mega Drive Collection on ps4 just to play Hill Top Zone!!
Best video game channel on the whole of the interwebs!
What game is this again? 0:20
I think you mean fez a lovely puzzle platformer (or mario64😅)
@@imaginarymadness5238 it was fez
Valiant Hearts & Degree of seperation needs a big shout out, also Volgar & Shantae
WHERE WAS SPINCH!?!? SPINCH is the BEST 2D platformer. It's proof you've never heard of it and NEED to play SPINCH!!!
Thx man. I was searching for a platform game
One day someone somewhere will mention Duke Nukem 1 & 2. Surprised no Shovel Knight too.
I'm surprised Will Of The Wisps wasn't on here, but some other great games are Tropical Freeze,Donkey Kong Country 2,and Mega Man Zero 3 Zero 3 is one of the best action platformers I ever played I would put it above even Mega Man X.
weirdly this vid didn't gimme a featured image when i shared it elsewhere. odd.
I was expecting Hollow knight to be near the top, perhaps even #1. To not even be on the list at all blows my mind 🤯
"10 great 2D platformers that aren't Mario"?
Preposterous! Off to gulag now!
you forgot the best of them all: the messenger
Dead Cells? Shovel Knight? Hollow Knight?
You should do 3d too. Thanks for this one though
Shovel knight?
Loved Castle of Illusion
Silhouette Mirage and Mischief Makers would like a few words with you
No Shovel Knight or DKC? 😂
No Guacamelee?!?!?..... this saddens me
Sonic Mania > Sonic 2
Sonic 3 & Knuckles > Sonic 2
Kirby 64 is one of the best platformers there is
Of the 2d variety
Great list, but no Donkey Kong country?
erm, no because of the rules at the start of the video
So no Donkey Kong Country
If you don't count DK, Yoshi, or Kirby it's basically "10 great 2d platforms that aren't Nintendo"
Okay... 'limbo' but no 'inside'... thats a bit of a disappointment. Sure, limbo is a very good game, but inside... is the best these story driven sidescrollers can be... The rest of the list is great keep up the good work!
"Sometimes, though, that third D is just one D too many."
True, ask my ex girlfriend!
what about chip n dale of ducktales on the nes those where good platformes
You guys have a good taste for 2d Games.
Mission one or another, but nevermind.
Cool Selection.
Ori is just THE Spirit of the Forest, in my opinion.
hollow Knight, little Nightmares?????
I'm probably one D too many ... 😩
most modern platformers are not fun at all imo they're just obsessed with being difficult just to be difficult and always present themselves so pretentiously. Just give me a DK Country or Mario World. cuphead and meat boy and etc, I just don't see the appeal
NO SUPERFROG?!
DISAPPOINTED!!!!
No hollow knight? Wtf?
Sorry but Sonic 3 & Knuckles was wayyyyy better than Sonic 2 in just about every way. Not saying Sonic 2 is bad at all though but Sonic 3 even on its own was so great at the time
No little big planet???
3:31 What's a Mega Drive? 😎🦅🇺🇸
It turns out that mountains have tons of berries of different varieties. If you are looking to compare a mountain with a video game think open world x 1000.
Mario not MERIO
Sonic probably, enough said
Unpopular opinion sonic 2 not that great sorry everyone
👽
BTW Ori is a spirit
Who's the odd looking bald fellow you're referencing in recent videos? I've never seen him before in my life, but I don't think I can trust him...🙃🤣
Sorry but how did you make a video on 2D platformers and not mention N++? Often regarded as the best platformer
Coz barely someone knows it :-/
@@wirti94 Alot of people know it bro

Please stop the "...if you want to get technical about it" gag. It's not funny
all the lists show the same games dude is boring
katana zero and axiom verge are sleepers
