    Billy Joel never sells tickets for the front rows of his concerts. Instead he has people picked from the cheap seats and brings them up front. True fans.
    I read he got tired of seeing nothing but bored faces of rich people up front.

      @@bambiexplores This story carries credence, but as most stories, is not true in every case. When back home in America, especially the Jersey/New York area he will have more say. Most likely, as with most with most tales, this was a two or three time occurrence that got stretched into a full-blown rumor..
      Still it does say a lot about the kind of artist he is.

      @@greggkotzman2542 The song was released in 77, he divorced her in 82, and didn't marry Brinkley until 85.
      Apparently neither he, or his band, ever really liked the song in the first place... and he hasn't liked playing it live since he divorced his first wife. He also wrote 'She's Always A Woman" about her.

    • @kennethmalone4689
      @kennethmalone4689 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@1976PartyBoy I think that's a bit of projecting. While song lyrics are often left to the interpretation. I think Joel was fairly clear here. The singer in the video (Joel) is a “downtown man” which certainly implies the opposite, that he is a relatively-humble, working-class guy. The premise of their entire interaction seems to be that the uptown girl is actually looking for a downtown man. Essentislly, she wants to date someone from a lower, more street-based class than herself. And the insinuated reason for so is that she is tired men that are “high-class” .

    • @MamaMOB
      @MamaMOB 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@1976PartyBoy then what does uptown girl mean? If downtown a man means he’s willing to eat her out what does an uptown girl do? I mean men don’t have anything on the top half so I don’t know of any guys who want me to go uptown. It’s almost like you didn’t actually pay attention to the song and just picked out some words to make sexual for no reason.

    Billy Joel married the supermodel Christie Brinkley less than two years after this song was released, but he wasn't even dating her when he started writing the song - he was actually dating another supermodel: Elle McPherson. According to an interview with Howard Stern, Joel had originally titled the song "Uptown Girls" and it was conceived on an occasion when he was surrounded by Christie Brinkley, Whitney Houston and his then girlfriend Elle Macpherson.
    Billy Joel had TWO supermodels! 👍👏👏

      I got to see him last year in Portland, Oregon, and yeah, he's definitely still got his voice! When he played Piano Man at the end, everyone in the crowd was singing along too, and he and the band dropped out for the last chorus, so it was basically us singing to him "Sing us a song, you're the Piano Man, sing us a song tonight..." Such an awesome and frankly, meta experience. We were up in the extreme nose-bleed seats and it was still an amazing show to watch.

    The downtown man is the tougher, blue collar, man's man.
    He's more down to earth and doesn't try to impress.
    Harder around the edges than what she's been raised with.

You know how in a town or city Uptown is usually where the rich, high bred, hoity toity people live & Downtown is usually where the poor blue collar working people live? So he's a poor blue collar working man from downtown (Downtown man) in love with a rich girl from uptown (uptown girl).

    The Uptown Girl is super-model Christie Brinkley, who was featured on the cover of People magazine in a bathing suit at the age of 60. She still looks stunning. She & Billy Joel we’re married from 1985 until 1996. They had a daughter named Alexa Ray, named for Ray Charles. Many stadiums have retired numbers with his name on it in tribute to how many sold out shows that he performed there. He started in 1971 & is still touring today. To quote: He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time[3] as well as the sixth best-selling recording artist and the third best-selling solo artist in the United States,[4] with over 150 million records sold. He’s had some battles with depression, but is now happily married to his 4th wife and has 2 little girls with her. He is a National Treasure!

      He not they, Billy sang all of the parts himself for the recording and mixing, which is even more amazing in itself,

    A downtown man is a blue collar man. Think construction worker. Shit I just saw someone else said the same thing. They beat me to it

    It was the 80s, Billy, half shirts were in for guys. If I had had the abs for it I would’ve worn one too.

    Not to date myself, but this was the first non-kiddie song that I liked that my parents didn't expose me to first!
    Still love it!

    Lacking full response overall about the video. Amazed at all the reaction videos that do this. There's history behind this video and MTV. Yes there are influences of Greased Lightning. What I got from this was - whatever, next video . . .

    Basicly she was a rich girl and he wasn't rich=(downtown man) the woman in this video was super modle Christy brinkley. I believe they were married for a while when this vodeo came out ,it did have some similarities to grease. If you like musicals check grease out .
