Union Pacific stands a good chance of landing some good public relations for this move they made. And if they keep it going, then the public will believe it's Union Pacific's right to buy up which ever railroad it desires. And rightfully so. Because any railroad that respects its fans, stands a far better chance at success. It's all about transparency, which is what investors look for when they buy stocks and bonds.
The number of people making a special effort to see these steam locomotives shows how important they are to american history and culture and for that reason, as much as anything, makes it worthwhile preserving these magnificent machines.
Charge to see them and see just how little interest there is. These folks parked along the road, are all elderly and cheap as hell. Our memories make things seem better than they were. If you only knew how little the railroad magnates cared about the health and safety of their employees maybe you would not be so nastalgic for those days to return.

Okay, I was wrong. I've watched America and Americans from here, in Britain and there in America, most of my life and as far as Steam Locomotives were concerned, I thought they didn't care. I was wrong. If that many people can turn out - albeit on a nice day - to wait for any amount of time to see two of the greatest - certainly the largest - steam locomotives anywhere, in Wyoming, then perhaps they do care. That was amazing. Well done UP for even thinking it would be a good idea and huge congratulations to Ed Dickens and his team of hero's (I bet they won't get a medal from you know who) for working so hard to achieve the objective. # 4014 lives again.
There more love for steam than you might think. There's even a National Historic site in Scranton, PA, called Steamtown, that's dedicated to steam preservation. Down the road in Strasburg is the Strasburg Railroad, which operates an 0-6-0, a 2-6-0, a 2-8-0 and a 2-10-0 on excursion duty, but still pulls the occasional freight service into town from the mainline. Tennesse Valley Railroad Museum has a Mikado in operation (and maybe others?) There are quite a few other steamers in service out there, you'd be surprised!
Thanks for your great video work! I'm an 82 year old brit who has never forgotten my train spotting adventures growing up! The steam days in England were a great experience. But I have to say the American locomotive's are in my opinion; the ultimate in steam loco's. To see a Big Boy running again is truly awesome and we can only hope we get to see it (as you said) off it's leash! I would love to take a ride on that piece of train history. Can you imagine a trip across the country in a train pulled by one of these beauties? You might get a little dirty, but it would be worth it. My father was a railroad man for 40 plus years. When I was a small boy, we visited Waycross, GA, and saw steam locomotives all over the place. But nothing as big as these two engines. Keep them rollin'

I wonder how fast 844 is. Those TALL wheels have a lot of top end potential.... BigBoys wheels aren't near as tall. I've seen the narrow gage locomotives we used up here with worm-drive drive axles ( sidewinders).... They didn't go fast but could pull a lot for such a little locomotive..... But nothing on earth comes close to the BIGBOY......

So far with all the video I’ve watched, it appears that they’re babying 4014 for the breaking in period. It’s been working a little bit picking up from dead stops, then 844 takes over. All of the drive by’s , there’s very little stack noise out of Big Boy, while quite a bit coming out of 844.
The Big Boy is able to run about 80 mph on a flat track... I’d love to see him run with little or no support from diesels. If you really wanna see the beauty and work they were made for, let them do what they were built for.

Hopefully after the 150th celebration is all wrapped up they will really let 4014 do the kind of work she was designed to do at the speeds which she was designed to run. My father worked for UP. And as a teenager in the 70s I got to take a tour of 844. I got to go in the cab, talk to the engineer, and ask him questions and such. It was awesome! That was the birth of my love of steam. Was never so happy as when I heard that a big boy was gonna be restored and return to the rails! Thanks for sharing your awesome video, I loved it!
Im from New Zealand and been following the restoration on 4014 for a long time. It was a childhood dream when I discovered the 4000 series locomotives in books to see one of them running again. Well done UP😘
When this locomotive sat in Pomona (a LONG time ago), you could climb around the cab and basically walk all over the thing. I was transfixed as a young boy and wondered if I'd ever see it on the rails. Thanks for your great videos!
Kudos to UP for preserving a piece of history. When Big Boy was built, steam technology had evolved to its highest level. It was state of art for the time. These locomotives are almost a living thing. When not in use they are quiet and asleep... but when firing one up they slowly come to life. They start breathing, creaking, moaning, pass gas, they become alive! They have a temperament... need a little oil here..a little grease there. Dont have too much pressure here but more heat there. Dont rush up to speed...enjoy life a little...throttle up slowly and keep a good draft on the boiler. Union Pacific has inspired 3 generations of “new” train enthusiasts! Parents and kids and grandchildren who have never seen a breathing steam locomotive before are now mesmerized how a big piece of iron can be alive and working. May these locomotives be maintained and live on for even more generations of people. Thank you UP and the dedicated employees! Very impressive and job WELL DONE!

Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 is back on the rails, it´s a living legend! This should be the headline in every news on TV, Newspaper etc. in these days. I´m a German railfan of US Steamengines, I´m still 63 years old. I Iwant to it before I die!!

I was present at the install of 4023 in Omaha in the 70's. This is one massive piece of machinery. The amount of work to undertake the overhaul of this is immense. My heart is with the continued survival of these beautiful machines. Raw power at its finest.
This video lets me see them and hear them but I am so envious of you for being there to FEEL them! Thank you for sharing your day! And the weather was perfect! My mother was born in 1917 athe whole family galivanted all over the place on free passesnd her dad worked for Frisco RR up and down the line between Tupelo, MS and Memphis, TN.. when I was 8 years old in 1960 we took the Empire Builder and other declining passenger trains back to Tupelo from bellingham, WA to see relatives. I was utterly transfixed by the big diesels and all the magic GN had to share but my poor Mom was sad and distracted and frustrated on the whole trip because to her, rail travel w/o the big steam locos just didn't cut it. Until I reached my young adulthood, I never did figure out what was bugging her so much. Then, like a bolt of lightning the morning the Royal Hudson visited Bellingham on a promotional tour, I "got" it. It's like some sort of benevolent dragon comes into your life and you're never the same. There's just nothing like live steam!
I was a little pist off with the lack of National and local news coverage especially in the east about the Big Boy hitting the rails again. For a chance, good news ri report. History in the making as Union Pacific does it again in a really big way and the stupid media drops the ball. THANKS Union Pacific for bringing back one hell of a masterpiece and thanks for the rail fan community for keeping our love and passion alive, because if we waited on the media those who couldn't see her live would have been in the dark.
As a boy I walked around 4014 and touched its massive driver wheels as it sat on outside display, pigeons roosting on its steam lines. I almost cannot believe that I am seeing it underway today as it was years before I was born. It took $$$ and vision to get this "done". Thank you UP for reassuring us that when we put our minds and shoulders to it, Americans can do anything. The beauty of the 4014 (...and 844) as result(s) both speak for themselves.
Steam trains maybe old, but they are gorgeous engines. It never hurts to have just a few steam trains running. Having them running the rails too allows old and newer generations to experience the majestic locomotive. It makes them very special in their own way. We don't want to replace the diesels, we just want to see these beautiful giants of steam and steel running the rails alongside diesels and electrics.
There was a lot more daring and "what if we..." back then. Now everything is about risk assessment and stockholders. Can't move a grain of sand without signing 27 forms
hondafrk I wouldn't say smarter. Now a days we have the ability to design what people in the past could've only dreamed of. I think it's more a drive my generation lacks and a fear of risk the one before me has.
My first sight of a 4000 class engine was at Holliday Park, Cheyenne in 1965. I was 17 years old, and I knew nothing abt railroading then. To think that Big Boys had made their last run only 6 years before. I never thought I wd see on one the road. Many thanks to UP for this effort.

What an amazing sight! Here in UK steam locomotives have to be restored and maintained by private individuals and ammeter railway societies. Each locomotive has to be stripped down and boiler tested every ten years and It often takes years to get it back. It is amazing that over there, UP have invested in restoring your rail history. Excellent work UP.
I never really thought much about locomotives until I scrollsawed a picture of a historic one for a friend, got hooked. Being a mechanic of one form or another all through life you'd think the mechanical aspect of these beast would have grabbed me. No worries though, I'm hooked and getting ready to build a model of the "General" on my scrollsaw.

The sight and sound of these magnificent locomotives is truly awesome and their survival to this day in fully working order is a credit to all concerned. That just so much time, effort and absolute dedication has been devoted to the realization of this event is really thought provoking, let alone contemplation the enormous sums of money involved. Ashamed to say that UK spectators of a run by Flying Scotsman did not behave in the impressively respectful and sensible way that the Citizens of Wyoming demonstrated here. Our timetable was seriously delayed by people trespassing on track. Excellent vid, loved the train robbery history to. Thank you so much for posting this.
We had people yelling at people who got close to the tracks. General rule is 25 feet away from the moving train. There were also safety patrol people from Union Pacific who kept driving by. Some who were too close got an earful
That's because US trains do not stop for people coming near the track. And our tracks aren't fenced in. Because of our heavier rolling stock and heavier engines, it's actually more of a hazard to stop for someone getting too near the track. So, any idiots out there become Darwin Awards. Easily. Also, it's nice not to have fences.
@@Ghostwalker2061 Some Steam Locos in the UK are permitted to, and do, run at 90mph. (e.g. Tornado) As you will imagine, they'll be in the next county before they get stopped at that speed. Thanks.
Cracking video and that is one serious piece of machinery that UP have preserved. There is a law of trespass in the UK regarding being in the rail corridor. The rail corridor is from fence to fence with the tracks in between. I often see videos where people are well inside the track corridor which means the drivers have nightmares seeing people close to the tracks. That said it’s easy to get unhindered shots of trains here by standing on platforms as trains flash by. Looking forward to seeing Flying Scotsman tonight heading towards Edinburgh from York.
This brings tears to my eyes seeing how people are lining the streets and rail crossings to get a glimpse of Big Boy .... I'm not American, but I feel patriotic in some way, it's like a part of history has been given back to the people ..... I envy y'all in the US seeing this 1st hand ....
almost impossible to think that these locomotives at one point was a some what common sight and no one really thought twice about see one now we have people from around the world lining up the rails just to see them
the big boy was never really a common sight, there were only 25 of them and they spent most of their time going over mountains. if you lived in cheyenne, ogden, laramie or or green river then they would have been a more common sight.
Best video yet of this magnificent machine and it's smaller cousin. What a time to be alive. Never thought I'd ever see this locomotive in such vivid colour and definition. And how about those close ups of all the reciprocating gear. Can also really see the articulation at work near the end too. Cheers for taking the trouble to bring this to the rest of us around the world. such an important machine from our past. And huge thanks to the team who restored it and of course big huge thanks to UP and their board for allocating the dollars to make this happen.

I was born in 1956, from Huntington Oregon, my grandfather started his career as a fireman for Union Pacific. As a very young child I remember him as a engineer in the yards of Huntington on and around steam locomotives! My stepfather was a conductor for Union Pacific and a real steam enthusiast! Taking to see steam tractors, cars! He loved steam locomotives. I was so lucky! In 1978 I started working for Union Pacific as a Carmen! Always loving steam I got to go up in cab of 8444 and look at it as a adult! Once when I was about out of high school my stepfather took me to Kimmer Wyoming to see a gas turbine driven locomotives! I was so fortunate to go on Union Pacific’s passenger trains and ride in dome cars, sleep in sleeper and eat in the dinner! I even got to ride on Z fright trains on the engine and older caboose with the cupola! Worked for Union Pacific for 37 years! What a wonderful life! I’m so luck
In Henry Ford Museum in Greenfield Village, (Dearborn Michigan) is a Big Boy. I have been fascinated with it since I first saw it as a child. With many pictures of it over the years and decades, myself wife and children standing in front of it. To see one in person is awesome. To see one in person traveling under its own power would be a dream come true!

Best lighting occurs at 14:52 and 20:17. The rest of the time the engines are in shadow. Incredibly challenging to get correct lighting on moving objects like these. Thank you for posting this wonderful video.

Kudos must go out to Ed Dickens and the whole steam shop team for a job well done and to UP's management for supporting this restoration and the tour that is planned. Joakim Larrson unfortunately the black smoke will not return. Back then these Big Boys ran on coal. What you see now is just the steam from diesel fire. This is to preserve them and to keep them from exploding. Yes it would be nice.
@@40calDeathPunch It's for four reasons really. It produces far less soot and other pollutants, it requires less work (no ash pan or smokebox to clear, no wear from unburned coal particles going through the boiler tubes - though that's kind of a double edged sword, because those cinders kept the tubes clear of residue), and it's much easier to refuel (they're not picky about what they burn though I believe UP uses heavy fuel oil like would be used in a home furnace). It's also way less fuel used per mile - something like 10-20 gallons per mile for a large loco as opposed to a ton of coal per 10-20 miles (depending on coal grade).
Tough choice- which engine to pan on the runbys. THANK YOU for bucking the apparent trend and staying with the locomotives on the runbys! Loved watching Big Boy articulate across the switches in the last shot too. GREAT VIDEO. And thanks for publishing this for those of us who couldn't be there.
I like the scene near the end, where the diesel is pushing the locomotives around the curve. You can see the 4014's articulation, which is pretty interesting. Also cool how they make steam come out of it, so you can imagine what it used to look like when it pulled trains by itself.

My father worked for UP. And as a teenager in the 70s I got to take a tour of 844. I got to go in the cab, talk to the engineer, and ask him questions and such. It was awesome! That was the birth of my love of steam. Was never so happy as when I heard that a big boy was gonna be restored and return to the rails!

When this locomotive sat in Pomona (a LONG time ago), you could climb around the cab and basically walk all over the thing. I was transfixed as a young boy and wondered if I'd ever see it on the rails. Thanks for your great videos!

Kudos to UP for preserving a piece of history. When Big Boy was built, steam technology had evolved to its highest level. It was state of art for the time. These locomotives are almost a living thing. When not in use they are quiet and asleep... but when firing one up they slowly come to life. They start breathing, creaking, moaning, pass gas, they become alive! They have a temperament... need a little oil here..a little grease there. Dont have too much pressure here but more heat there. Dont rush up to speed...enjoy life a little...throttle up slowly and keep a good draft on the boiler. Union Pacific has inspired 3 generations of “new” train enthusiasts! Parents and kids and grandchildren who have never seen a breathing steam locomotive before are now mesmerized how a big piece of iron can be alive and working. May these locomotives be maintained and live on for even more generations of people. Thank you UP and the dedicated employees! Very impressive and job WELL DONE!

Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 is back on the rails, it´s a living legend! This should be the headline in every news on TV, Newspaper etc. in these days. I´m a German railfan of US Steamengines, I´m still 63 years old. I Iwant to it before I die!!

I was present at the install of 4023 in Omaha in the 70's. This is one massive piece of machinery. The amount of work to undertake the overhaul of this is immense. My heart is with the continued survival of these beautiful machines. Raw power at its finest.

My mother was born in 1917 athe whole family galivanted all over the place on free passesnd her dad worked for Frisco RR up and down the line between Tupelo, MS and Memphis, TN.. when I was 8 years old in 1960 we took the Empire Builder and other declining passenger trains back to Tupelo from bellingham, WA to see relatives. I was utterly transfixed by the big diesels and all the magic GN had to share but my poor Mom was sad and distracted and frustrated on the whole trip because to her, rail travel w/o the big steam locos just didn't cut it. Until I reached my young adulthood, I never did figure out what was bugging her so much. Then, like a bolt of lightning the morning the Royal Hudson visited Bellingham on a promotional tour, I "got" it. It's like some sort of benevolent dragon comes into your life and you're never the same. There's just nothing like live steam!
Thanks to all involved in restoring Big Boy. We love you all. What a grand sight to behold. Best wishes from all of us here in New Zealand.

I was a little pist off with the lack of National and local news coverage especially in the east about the Big Boy hitting the rails again. For a chance, good news ri report. History in the making as Union Pacific does it again in a really big way and the stupid media drops the ball. THANKS Union Pacific for bringing back one hell of a masterpiece and thanks for the rail fan community for keeping our love and passion alive, because if we waited on the media those who couldn't see her live would have been in the dark.

As a boy I walked around 4014 and touched its massive driver wheels as it sat on outside display, pigeons roosting on its steam lines. I almost cannot believe that I am seeing it underway today as it was years before I was born. It took $$$ and vision to get this "done". Thank you UP for reassuring us that when we put our minds and shoulders to it, Americans can do anything. The beauty of the 4014 (...and 844) as result(s) both speak for themselves.

Steam trains maybe old, but they are gorgeous engines. It never hurts to have just a few steam trains running. Having them running the rails too allows old and newer generations to experience the majestic locomotive. It makes them very special in their own way. We don't want to replace the diesels, we just want to see these beautiful giants of steam and steel running the rails alongside diesels and electrics.
I tip my hat to those who maintain and manage these marvelous mechanical monsters, slide rule engineering at its finest.

hondafrk I wouldn't say smarter. Now a days we have the ability to design what people in the past could've only dreamed of. I think it's more a drive my generation lacks and a fear of risk the one before me has.
My first sight of a 4000 class engine was at Holliday Park, Cheyenne in 1965. I was 17 years old, and I knew nothing abt railroading then. To think that Big Boys had made their last run only 6 years before. I never thought I wd see on one the road. Many thanks to UP for this effort.

What an amazing sight! Here in UK steam locomotives have to be restored and maintained by private individuals and ammeter railway societies. Each locomotive has to be stripped down and boiler tested every ten years and It often takes years to get it back. It is amazing that over there, UP have invested in restoring your rail history. Excellent work UP.

I never really thought much about locomotives until I scrollsawed a picture of a historic one for a friend, got hooked. Being a mechanic of one form or another all through life you'd think the mechanical aspect of these beast would have grabbed me. No worries though, I'm hooked and getting ready to build a model of the "General" on my scrollsaw.

The sight and sound of these magnificent locomotives is truly awesome and their survival to this day in fully working order is a credit to all concerned. That just so much time, effort and absolute dedication has been devoted to the realization of this event is really thought provoking, let alone contemplation the enormous sums of money involved. Ashamed to say that UK spectators of a run by Flying Scotsman did not behave in the impressively respectful and sensible way that the Citizens of Wyoming demonstrated here. Our timetable was seriously delayed by people trespassing on track.

We had people yelling at people who got close to the tracks. General rule is 25 feet away from the moving train. There were also safety patrol people from Union Pacific who kept driving by. Some who were too close got an earful
That's because US trains do not stop for people coming near the track. And our tracks aren't fenced in. Because of our heavier rolling stock and heavier engines, it's actually more of a hazard to stop for someone getting too near the track. So, any idiots out there become Darwin Awards. Easily. Also, it's nice not to have fences.
@@Ghostwalker2061 Some Steam Locos in the UK are permitted to, and do, run at 90mph. (e.g. Tornado) As you will imagine, they'll be in the next county before they get stopped at that speed. Thanks.

Cracking video and that is one serious piece of machinery that UP have preserved. There is a law of trespass in the UK regarding being in the rail corridor. The rail corridor is from fence to fence with the tracks in between. I often see videos where people are well inside the track corridor which means the drivers have nightmares seeing people close to the tracks. That said it’s easy to get unhindered shots of trains here by standing on platforms as trains flash by. Looking forward to seeing Flying Scotsman tonight heading towards Edinburgh from York.
This brings tears to my eyes seeing how people are lining the streets and rail crossings to get a glimpse of Big Boy .... I'm not American, but I feel patriotic in some way, it's like a part of history has been given back to the people ..... I envy y'all in the US seeing this 1st hand ....
almost impossible to think that these locomotives at one point was a some what common sight and no one really thought twice about see one now we have people from around the world lining up the rails just to see them
the big boy was never really a common sight, there were only 25 of them and they spent most of their time going over mountains. if you lived in cheyenne, ogden, laramie or or green river then they would have been a more common sight.

Best video yet of this magnificent machine and it's smaller cousin. What a time to be alive. Never thought I'd ever see this locomotive in such vivid colour and definition. And how about those close ups of all the reciprocating gear. Can also really see the articulation at work near the end too. Cheers for taking the trouble to bring this to the rest of us around the world. such an important machine from our past. And huge thanks to the team who restored it and of course big huge thanks to UP and their board for allocating the dollars to make this happen.

I was born in 1956, from Huntington Oregon, my grandfather started his career as a fireman for Union Pacific. As a very young child I remember him as a engineer in the yards of Huntington on and around steam locomotives!
My stepfather was a conductor for Union Pacific and a real steam enthusiast!
Taking to see steam tractors, cars! He loved steam locomotives. I was so lucky!
In 1978 I started working for Union Pacific as a Carmen!
Always loving steam I got to go up in cab of 8444 and look at it as a adult!
Once when I was about out of high school my stepfather took me to Kimmer Wyoming to see a gas turbine driven locomotives!
I was so fortunate to go on Union Pacific’s passenger trains and ride in dome cars, sleep in sleeper and eat in the dinner!
I even got to ride on Z fright trains on the engine and older caboose with the cupola!
Worked for Union Pacific for 37 years!

In Henry Ford Museum in Greenfield Village, (Dearborn Michigan) is a Big Boy. I have been fascinated with it since I first saw it as a child. With many pictures of it over the years and decades, myself wife and children standing in front of it. To see one in person is awesome. To see one in person traveling under its own power would be a dream come true!

Best lighting occurs at 14:52 and 20:17. The rest of the time the engines are in shadow. Incredibly challenging to get correct lighting on moving objects like these. Thank you for posting this wonderful video.
Yes it was terrible lighting almost the entire route with the sun in the wrong positions almost everywhere you go. It was a tough one to film.
@@travelingtom923 These vehicles are so hard to capture. Take any long shot you like, minimize it and surround it with pictures that indicate relative scale. Such as, a child standing next to a wheel.

Thank you Travelling Tom for shooting and posting this very memorable event. I happened to be in Medicine Bow to see it there. This is my favorite of all the 4014 videos posted on youtube. Kudos must go out to Ed Dickens and the whole steam shop team for a job well done and to UP's management for supporting this restoration and the tour that is planned. Makes me proud to live in Wyoming and America.

Joakim Larrson unfortunately the black smoke will not return. Back then these Big Boys ran on coal. What you see now is just the steam from diesel fire. This is to preserve them and to keep them from exploding. Yes it would be nice.
@@40calDeathPunch It's for four reasons really. It produces far less soot and other pollutants, it requires less work (no ash pan or smokebox to clear, no wear from unburned coal particles going through the boiler tubes - though that's kind of a double edged sword, because those cinders kept the tubes clear of residue), and it's much easier to refuel (they're not picky about what they burn though I believe UP uses heavy fuel oil like would be used in a home furnace). It's also way less fuel used per mile - something like 10-20 gallons per mile for a large loco as opposed to a ton of coal per 10-20 miles (depending on coal grade).

I like the scene near the end, where the diesel is pushing the locomotives around the curve. You can see the 4014's articulation, which is pretty interesting. Also cool how they make steam come out of it, so you can imagine what it used to look like when it pulled trains by itself.

I love the fact you documented how huge of a crowd it attracted. Like one of the other comments says, it shows how important keeping our railroad history preserved is... but on the other hand I find it funny in a way. Whatever the case, these are all great shots, considering the number of people around. You captured the perfect amount of people and train, basically.
