Easy to forget that Motown was still considered a small company back then, even when it was pumping out all those classics. Gordy's company was a family-owned company, an independent, not affiliated with any of the big record companies like RCA, Atlantic, etc. It is truly mind-boggling that this "small" company was beating the big guys when it came to their hit ratio. Just goes to show you, if you give the public something that really connects with them on a gut level, and do it with quality, you can beat anybody any time.

The music speaks for itself, that's why. Berry Gordy himself thought the mixing and mastering at motown was lacking in those days compared to other records that came out on other companies around the same time, and in sone cases by ear he probably was right, but their records sold like hot cakes, why? The music (songs, arrangements and production) itself they was putting out was that good back then.

Ah, those studio musicians of Motown...James Jamerson, the father of the bass line played like a lead guitar..a genius. He was the sound of the driving beat of those songs that resembled the sounds heard in the auto plant where Berry Gordy once worked, was pure Motown with that drivinv beat and with those amazing soaring horns it was impossible not to listen to it. Papa Benny Benjamin, maestro of the drums...all of the greats are there. When they started using the Detroit Symphony the square looking white guys, over 55 in suits were kind of amazed to be invited to play on their tracks.these snobs who never heard a rock n' roll record they liked. Once they started with the Motown stable of singers they all got to enjoy it, and each other.
