Umm because the point should be that the game updates and improves upon the original, it's called the definitive edition for a reason and AOE2DE improved the original a lot.
I don't really like AOE3 myself but this review was horrible. "A game not as smart as it thinks it is" no examples. "Historical inaccuracies" no examples.
All the games in 2020 what IGN reviewed was 10/10 and it's already a meme just go and check cyberpunk most recent trailer comments. So I guess they had to do shitty review for this....

For example he says there are too many strategies and has to spend 100s of hrs to learn them. Wtf it's an rts game. me too. It was one of my favorite game growing up. Sunk alot of time in it, i know its not perfect but this guy really has to slip on a banana, hit his head and we all say our prayers. jk jk
So basically he's saying: "It's pretty but I'm an AOE2 fan so I don't like it." Well then... AOE2 is an awesome game. I like Castles, Rams, Scorpions, Onagers and a lot of the unique units but I would be more disappointed if AOE3 was just another AOE2. Point of a sequel is to try new things which is what AOE3 did back in the day. It's not perfect since AOE2 kind perfected the Age of Empires formula already.... Once you reach your peak, you can't go any higher really. The definitive edition rebalances some things, adds two new factions and fixes some of the grind of the Home City shipments. Also new textures and models since its a Remaster. Kind of all I really wanted from this DE really... If I just wanted AOE2 again....well, I already have it.... Some of us even have all three of them.
Actually its the devs who should be blamed for the failure of this game as they added one unwanted feature that is homecity levels. Just that one feature is most annoying in Aoe3 and have turned off most players. Have they removed it in first installment majority of Aoe2 players have defected to Aoe3 my now eagerly. Now, they have removed it Aoe2 players will be like patriotic towards their game. They will be like I am aoe2 player and I will not play that Aoe3 Game. I have seen this patriotic kind of feeling in Aoe2 players.

This is a brilliant game - I don't think this review gives it credit at all. Hating on the home city though, did you actually play the game at all? It's the most fundamental feature in the game as it's supposed to be the entire basis of your strategy to win the game. Anybody used to play this back in the OG days on 40 min treaty setting? That was epic.

Review seems way too narky, and trying to cut the game down for being flawed. Even going so far as to insult the story as a "stolen idea from the da vinci code". Ah yes, because any item of significance related to a secret society, must be stolen from the movie. That and then also saying the bloody card system is too complicated. It isn't complicated. You customize your deck to provide more units in the later ages the more XP you gain. Certain factions have certain specialized units that are better than others, or certain upgrades that other factions don't. Like, come on. I understand wanting to be critical, but not when the game literally has no issues outside of the janky movement.

"From the movie"? Yes, they made a movie based on the novel, but I believe the novel is more renowned. The book could have inspired the makers of Age of Empires III, but the movie wasn't out yet when Age of Empires III was released.
“It’s too difficult to figure out the strategy for each civilization so therefore game is bad” In all my time playing the original I’ve denoted that each civilization had multiple ways to play and all sorts of strategical plans may work, but yes it takes time to develop them. I genuinely don’t understand how not immediately understanding all of the strategies is a bad thing, if I could just look at a civilization and know how they play well all actual in-play strategy disappears because there is no unexpected variety.
The game does that well where AoE2’s skill ceiling was all about micromanagement. I honestly prefer macro knowledge to be more prevalent in online play. Seeing who can perform more like an AI is exhausting

You don't need a physics degree to build your deck around your civ. What most people don't realise is that 'Remastered' and 'DE' isn't supposed to be new it's supposed to be old with bugs removed with only little new content. How is it difficult to manage home city cards? you customise what you want to bring in. Also you mention language being changed? what about the British saying "commandoment"? almost like most nations don't speak their native tongue,
This is my favorite AOE. It's more fast paced, units are builded in groups so the battles are more engaging, and the graphics and physics of the buildings being destroyed amazed me in the past, as much as the music. I really never got into AOE 1 and 2 at the time (I mean, I played them a lot, but never really loved them), I even always preffered to play Stronghold 1 instead of these games, but AOE 3 was just so fun, beautiful, with great sound track, that this game made me appreciate this series a lot more. The review for some reason makes it sounds like it is a bad game just because it is different from AOE 1 and 2, and that's not true at all.
IGN: Gives the original Age of Empires 3 an 8.8 back in 2005. Also IGN: Gives the Definitive version, which reviewer claims is superior in every way, a 6.

Terrible quality review from IGN. Expected more than the reviewer poorly understanding the gameplay theory, and referring to it as "weird". Try playing it for more than 15 minutes. It's not a "funky, experimental" RTS.
A reviewer should always be nuetral to any game they are reviewing. Not a fawning fanbooy nor a hater. To make this review worse, the guy spends so much time disscussing historical inaccuracies and whatnot. Tell us about the gameplay, online experiences, bugs, feel, first hour and 11 hour experience differences. What the hell is this diatrabe about name changing and whatnot. Nobody cares.

This guy is just salty cause he doesn't have the drive to learn a civilization, which players who really want to play this game do. He's complaining of it being to hard or complicated but that's just causs he's not built for this game. Better find someone to review games like this with the passion needed, and who will understand why the civs are built in such ways and the cards as well.

Idk; I for one have always loved the “Black family” campaign story trilogy in AOE 3! Big fan of the characters too.. from Morgan Black and pirate Lizzie to Amelia Black on the early American frontier! I don’t mind the fantastical jaunt to the “Fountain of Youth”, and revisiting a much changed Fountain map in Ch.3 from the way it first appeared in Ch.1 was really neat... kind of representative of how old myths evolve and fade away as history progresses...
One of the best game ever. The colonial age was bitter in real life too after the gun powder. So play the game not cry for not knowing how it works. Learn it. The only best thing about aoe 3 was it's brutal campaigns

The part about “jerky” unit movement both in sea and land is true and it’s not addressed in this update but i still love this game and enjoy playing it. Some of negative thing in this review were nitpicking, like how story is unoriginal?! Or why economy and countering enemy army matter so much?! That’s just RTS 101!
Every game review has a bunch of people in the comments trashing it, but some of the frustration about this review really is very justified. The card system is simply not confusing. Really, it’s mostly units and resources, and then what age you can order them. It’s pretty obvious how it works and how to align it with a civilization’s general strengths. I was very very surprised when he said it would take hundreds of hours to understand it. That’s just plain false. If you don’t want it to be confusing, you can just set it to deliver you units and a fort, etc.
why is it when your praising it, it sounds like your mocking it?. realllyyyyyy. give it a break. AoE3 is different vs AoE1 and 2 but it has its perks. now this definitive edition improved it.
I can accept different experiences with this game, it's ok if you don't like it, it's ok if you love it. The problem is, if you already hate something, why even bother? Let somebody who already has experience with the franchise or just an actual RTS expert to analyze this game, is not that hard.

You know I was very worried about getting this game cause of people like u giving bad reviews of the game from steam to IGN “disliked” I have it and I’m happy to say that it’s a beautiful game takes me back from when I was a kid and I love it! Don’t let reviews keep you from getting what you want try it out first then decide !!
I would prefer a veteran aoe 3 player (not a part of the development team) to post a review. Someone who has some idea on what parameters to rate the DE on. This is a complex RTS game which can't be appreciated by some on the fly review. This is not to say that the game currently isn't riddled with bugs (which will hopefully be fixed as developers work on them).
He says it in the review, but for some native american factions they had the wrong names, models looked wrong and they spoke the wrong language. Not only insensitive, also historically inaccurate.

He barely mentions the new Incan and Swedish civilisations; complaims about the 'awful colors choices'; and barely mentions the upgrades in multiplayer accessibility and matchmaking. He sounds like the guy who reviewed AOE 2 DE, complaining that you can't rotate the camera, wtf
"A story rewrite to remove some insensitive content". Colonial history and wars to establish governmental civilisations at the expense of hunter gatherer tribes is supposed to be sensitive content, suppressing knowledge of a brutal past can doom people to repeat it.
Even if they give me the old games, AOE2 and AOE3, with updated graphics and sound, I will still take it. That's how much I love this game. Thank you for the creators and developers for their effort to bring this game up to date to match the current display devices and audio devices.

Worst review ever about AOE3. The guy is definitively not an AOE3 player. The cards are awesome, not confusing at all. It is true that you need to study the cards, but you can understand it in a few hours (not hundreds).

I like both AOE 2 AND AOE 3. They different games and the home city mechanics were fun I liked it. I hate that AOE 3 DE is such a buggy mess though.

IGN has been a blatant joke for at least a decade now.
I think my 12 years old cousin can do a better "review" than this dude.
This is my favorite AOE. It's more fast paced, units are builded in groups so the battles are more engaging, and the graphics and physics of the buildings being destroyed amazed me in the past, as much as the music. I really never got into AOE 1 and 2 at the time (I mean, I played them a lot, but never really loved them), I even always preffered to play Stronghold 1 instead of these games, but AOE 3 was just so fun, beautiful, with great sound track, that this game made me appreciate this series a lot more. The review for some reason makes it sounds like it is a bad game just because it is different from AOE 1 and 2, and that's not true at all.
IGN: Gives the original Age of Empires 3 an 8.8 back in 2005.
Also IGN: Gives the Definitive version, which reviewer claims is superior in every way, a 6.
This review is less than Okay, horrible.

IGN has really been going down in quality over the years for their reviews. This guy sounds like hes just reading a boring script and going through the motions

AoE3 is my favourite of the whole series, and will stay that way.
Terrible quality review from IGN. Expected more than the reviewer poorly understanding the gameplay theory, and referring to it as "weird". Try playing it for more than 15 minutes. It's not a "funky, experimental" RTS.

A reviewer should always be nuetral to any game they are reviewing. Not a fawning fanbooy nor a hater. To make this review worse, the guy spends so much time disscussing historical inaccuracies and whatnot. Tell us about the gameplay, online experiences, bugs, feel, first hour and 11 hour experience differences. What the hell is this diatrabe about name changing and whatnot. Nobody cares.

The cards are not confusing wtf
This guy is just salty cause he doesn't have the drive to learn a civilization, which players who really want to play this game do. He's complaining of it being to hard or complicated but that's just causs he's not built for this game. Better find someone to review games like this with the passion needed, and who will understand why the civs are built in such ways and the cards as well.

Idk; I for one have always loved the “Black family” campaign story trilogy in AOE 3! Big fan of the characters too.. from Morgan Black and pirate Lizzie to Amelia Black on the early American frontier! I don’t mind the fantastical jaunt to the “Fountain of Youth”, and revisiting a much changed Fountain map in Ch.3 from the way it first appeared in Ch.1 was really neat... kind of representative of how old myths evolve and fade away as history progresses...
One of the best game ever. The colonial age was bitter in real life too after the gun powder. So play the game not cry for not knowing how it works. Learn it. The only best thing about aoe 3 was it's brutal campaigns

I loved this original game
The part about “jerky” unit movement both in sea and land is true and it’s not addressed in this update but i still love this game and enjoy playing it. Some of negative thing in this review were nitpicking, like how story is unoriginal?! Or why economy and countering enemy army matter so much?! That’s just RTS 101!

Every game review has a bunch of people in the comments trashing it, but some of the frustration about this review really is very justified. The card system is simply not confusing. Really, it’s mostly units and resources, and then what age you can order them. It’s pretty obvious how it works and how to align it with a civilization’s general strengths. I was very very surprised when he said it would take hundreds of hours to understand it. That’s just plain false. If you don’t want it to be confusing, you can just set it to deliver you units and a fort, etc.

why is it when your praising it, it sounds like your mocking it?. realllyyyyyy. give it a break. AoE3 is different vs AoE1 and 2 but it has its perks. now this definitive edition improved it.
I can accept different experiences with this game, it's ok if you don't like it, it's ok if you love it.
The problem is, if you already hate something, why even bother? Let somebody who already has experience with the franchise or just an actual RTS expert to analyze this game, is not that hard.

Ok, I have to say that when I usually saw people criticizing IGN reviews because of their poor and often inconsistent opinions I thought it was and exaggeration but this review proved me wrong ... I dont care this was by far the best game of the series. Hugely underrated by diehard AoE2 players.
You know I was very worried about getting this game cause of people like u giving bad reviews of the game from steam to IGN “disliked” I have it and I’m happy to say that it’s a beautiful game takes me back from when I was a kid and I love it! Don’t let reviews keep you from getting what you want try it out first then decide !!
I would prefer a veteran aoe 3 player (not a part of the development team) to post a review. Someone who has some idea on what parameters to rate the DE on. This is a complex RTS game which can't be appreciated by some on the fly review. This is not to say that the game currently isn't riddled with bugs (which will hopefully be fixed as developers work on them).
Anyone want to tell me what the original "insensitive content" was?
He says it in the review, but for some native american factions they had the wrong names, models looked wrong and they spoke the wrong language. Not only insensitive, also historically inaccurate.
@@reJECT0 Not only that, but a lot of people complained about English settlers doing Native American dances. I mean, it's just a function of the game, but I can see how that would be rather poorly received.

Its basically in early access Steam reviews, which are the only ones that matter, has it at mixed due to performance and bugs.
Bro, that's why reviews shorter than ~20 min shouldn't even exist... He barely mentions the new Incan and Swedish civilisations; complaims about the 'awful colors choices'; and barely mentions the upgrades in multiplayer accessibility and matchmaking. He sounds like the guy who reviewed AOE 2 DE, complaining that you can't rotate the camera, wtf
It's my favorite AOE game, with Mythology a close 2nd. But he's absolutely correct about the most interesting and least clear home card elements.

Colonial history and wars to establish governmental civilisations at the expense of hunter gatherer tribes is supposed to be sensitive content, suppressing knowledge of a brutal past can doom people to repeat it.
Just describing things as 'weird'? In a final verdict this might make a little sense. But it's never explained.

Even if they give me the old games, AOE2 and AOE3, with updated graphics and sound, I will still take it. That's how much I love this game. Thank you for the creators and developers for their effort to bring this game up to date to match the current display devices and audio devices.

Worst review ever about AOE3. The guy is definitively not an AOE3 player. The cards are awesome, not confusing at all. It is true that you need to study the cards, but you can understand it in a few hours (not hundreds).
