Development cycle for the Atari 2600:
    1. Let's make this music work.
    2. Shit, we're out of memory.

Heh heh. Probably not far from the truth! TBH, though, it's amazing they were able to program anything with any sophistication at all on that thing, considering the hardware specs: No video memory to speak of (The programmer was responsible for telling the system what to write to the screen, on a line by line basis), and only 128 bytes (yes, BYTES) of RAM.

i played the C64-version back in the erly 90s and this music was all this years stuck in my head in a deep deep corner of my brain - now it's released again into my consciousness

That's part of the comparing process. How can You compare every aspect from graphics to sound without including little nuances like death animations & the sounds associated with it. I feel that I would be doing the whole spirit of these comparisons a great dis service by not including the death scenes. Who agrees with me here ?? thumbs me up. :)

I was blown away with the Sharp x68000 version. Kudos for the 2600 to reproduce the sound like that. I was shocked the ColecoVision port looked and sounded better overall to the MSX version. It should have been the other way around. Maybe the ColecoVision version came out after the MSX? To me the MSX version's attempt to reproduce missed the mark. The Atari 800 version feels like it was partially the hardware limitations but maybe they needed better coders. ColecoVision ruled this one!

Mr. Do's Castle is a really forgotten gem. Robotron 2084 gets all the glory for onscreen madness but if you weren't careful in this game, things could get out of hand in no time. Great, great game from Universal. Played the arcade, c64 and Colecovision versions.

I used to play this on Colecovision a lot. About 20 years ago a flea market had a cabaret version for sale. I wanted to buy it so bad.

Good one here. Even though it was not widely ported, it was still put on some of the more notable consoles & computers of the time.

Also to its credit it looked like the 2600 version implemented skull traps, which didn't seem to be the case from what we saw of the MSX version. Although we didn't see that feature of the game play demonstrated (along with the keys.)

As usual, the 2600 version was so graphically challenged that it was nearly unplayable... but WOW, that musical reproduction may have been the best I've heard on that system.

I have the 5200 version myself. It's nearly impossible to play with that awful joystick. Eventually I plan on getting the Colecovision version, if I can find a copy that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

+pollyisagoodbird That, unfortunately, is a struggle. I paid a little over $100 for mine in 2006. At least it was complete at that price.

Some Atari 800/XL emulators default to PAL. The Atari 800 version in the video seem to be playing slow. It should play at the same speed as the 5200 version in NTSC.

That Sharp x68000 seems to have some excellent capabilities, as is evident in many of these comparisons. It's too bad they were never available in the United States. They seem to be on par with or surpassing the SNES and Genesis/Megadrive of the time. Were they just too expensive? Poor selection of games? Some other problem?

The C64 version is the only 8 bit in the video that doesn't use the monochrome atari 2600 sprites, All look very poor compared.

The ironic thing is that besides hardware, programmers ability with hardware made the world of difference. The best version besides the arcade version was the Sharp, but you are comparing a 68000 based machine that was much more powerful than Mr Do's 1981/82 arcade hardware. I played the 8 bit Atari version back in the day and find the Colecovision version a bit better, but remember, the Colecovision was 3 year newer hardware with a 4mhz Z80 cpu. The Atari computer 1.79 MHz 6502, and the C64 literally a 1mhz 6510. The poor Atari uses a literally castrated cpu with 1/8 kB if system ram...I am impressed it can make sounds really.

you're right young man! making a weighted comparison, the 8 bit atari version is much better programmed than the X68000 version. It was times when cleverness and creativity were often able to overcome the power of more advanced and powerful hardware !!

You're right, Mr. SEA. You might find the video series on the Atari 2600 hardware interesting. th-cam.com/video/O8AaXEq1Qok/w-d-xo.html There are several parts. There is also a nicely cut-down edited version somewhere on TH-cam.

Speaking as a proud 2600 owner, its version of this game was really terrible! I didn't even know a port for this game existed, probably because I never touched my 2600 again after getting my ColecoVision. And wow, the ColecoVision version looks better than Commodore64!

Commodore is the best of course, the only thing that x68000 has over the others is the colors. The commodore's music is obviously superior even over the arcade.

The x68000 version either uses emulation, or the the programmers converted the actual Z80 source code to 68K code. The x68k includes all the arcade bugs and its few tricks.
