    The thing is that the part that says "with online personality" is optional. It could be a case where you only see an actor as his most famous role or an IRL friendship where you don't yet understand your friend aside from the traits they show on the surface.

    • @somedudewatchintv5297
      @somedudewatchintv5297 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I agree with the actor example, but if you are in an actual relationship with someone it isn't parasocial.

    • @mosesjoe3763
      @mosesjoe3763 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      "Public Personality" is for a more broader general term.
      While "Online, TV, Media, etc. Personality" are a little more specific fields.

      @aarvlo 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      the term "parasocial" is specifically about one sided relationships with mass media performers and creators, it was invented in the time of the radio and the early television to describe the relationship between the listener and news/show hosts but obviously it can include streamers, politicians, actors, singers, etc. Originally it was a technical psychological term to describe the relationship but the term was adopted in the mainstream and it's been associated with more extreme examples bordering in delusion and stalking

    I know basically nothing about that game, so correct me if I'm grossly off here.
    But I find it creepy that the MC gets together with the "hero" figure of that moment just because she felt indebted to him. Sounds like grade A trauma bonding. That's usually not a strong foundation for a healthy relationship.
    And quite honestly, with no context it sounds like potential stalker behavior as well. "If I come in at the right time to save her from this creep, she will _have_ to love me!!!"

      It's been a while since I watched the game, but I'm pretty sure this is a bad ending. I think the twist is that the stalker, ex-boyfriend, and police officer were all in on it.

    Wait, so is there no Japanese word for this concept, just the English loan-word? I know that it's a fairly new idea (at least in terms of general usage), but I would think Japan would have a native word for it.

    • @firstnamelastname8439

      They could probably string something together, but just borrowing from English seems to be more fashionable in recent decades.

    • @DinnerForkTongue

    I kind of felt IRyS reaction tbh, I didn't really understand the definition either until more recently. It seemed like, a few years ago, you couldn't post any positive interaction between a VTuber and chat without someone wagging their finger at you going "no no no parasocial relationships are bad!" I thought to myself, nah that can't be it, but I had no idea what it could actually mean.

    • @DelphinSquared

      I always felt like parasocial already existed in the entertainment industry, and Online personalities are just an extension of that.

    • @comradeofthebalance3147
      @comradeofthebalance3147 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      No it has always been here. Think super fans of the 60s and 70s. With streaming, it has become much more defined. ‘positive interaction’ already means you assume you are personally having an exchange rather than consuming, years ago the word simp was that description as they were always more likely to donate. It can be bad in subtle ways such as someone who barely interacts with anyone has their messages read by the streamer and getting a response. This incorrectly alleviates the need for social interactions and allowing themselves to not need to talk irl as much. This research is still a child but we are getting there

      @@comradeofthebalance3147 I've never thought about that before, when you mentioned how this kind of connection could alleviate the need for social interactions. If you got any DOIs to drop here, I'd love to read more about it.

    • @Raidanzoup
      @Raidanzoup หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@comradeofthebalance3147 I feel like old shows and movies from before the 2000s had zealous fans talking to posters of their favorite artists in their rooms, but these days people can be furiously typing into the chat of a livestream lol. Whether it's Beatlemania or MJ or the 90's boyband craze, people somehow end up imagining themselves just a little bit too close to the celebs they like.
      The first time I really took any time to think about this was when I listened to a Giant Bomb podcast from around 2012/2013 and a listener email read something like "I've listened to you guys talk so much about your lives that I feel like we're old friends" and the guys on the podcast had to put their feet down and say that what you heard on the podcast/internet was like less than %5 of them as people.
      The part about the brain hitting its quota for social interaction is so interesting, though.
