Yeah Black Clover went from bleh to one of my favorite shonen anime. Every time something big happened it had me itching for more. The world building, fights, and characters are super investing and worth the binge!
@@duran5293 Late response, but it is anime directed towards teenage boys. Often involving violence and a lot of fighting. It's the largest anime category by far, some of the examples include Naruto, Dragon Ball/DBZ, One Piece, One Punch Man, Black Clover, Fairy Tail, Death Note, etc.
@@DeltaDrifter2201 To bad Black Clover's author already solved that problem with having the 6 month timeskip being animated with him working closely with it. Something called "Canon Filler"
Mr. Unknown uh huh.... well it still isn’t source material. I hope he can keep pumping out good manga chapters all while keeping the anime in check cause that seems like a lot of work to handle doing both at the same time. I even heard he passed out a little while back most likely from being overworked and stressed. But whatever floats the boat I guess.
Late to the party, but I love how Asta actually cares about people around him, in a way that shows he is AWARE of how others feel and think. Far too many shonen protags fail to do that. And Asta is genuinely compassionate, like he is just a good wholesome lad
Yea its sad but a bit hilarious how stale the genre has become over the years when simply being an actual upstanding nice person who cares about others and supports his friend's growth is a notable thing. Definitely is a strong point for the show as a whole.
@@pathwaystoadventure I’m five months late to this conversation but it’s likely not just because the genre is stale. It seems a lot of people in real life don’t even show half of the consideration for other people that Asta’s character does. This was especially revealed during the pandemic and how people treated one another as well as essential workers. When a character like Asta acts the way he does, it resonates with people since the sad truth is not everyone is like that
super late to the party, but I think there is another reason why his character resonated with me, he hates "losing" and "being left behind" as much as any other anime protagonist but he doesn't blame the people who are ahead of him or get's depressed "because it's all he can do", instead he is frustrated because he knows he can get better results, and works on himself or the circumstances. He doesn't think much about "maybe something is wrong with me" which frankly IS true, since he can't do magic, but more about what he can do to change his surroundings and himself to better himself
Super duper hyper late for the party but i actually think that Asta is the embodiment of something bigger than what the show is trying to convey. In regard to the post time skip, we can recognize that I have no idea what I'm talking about and I just shit my pants
honestly that Zora story got me good, since he was just a small peasant magic knight without any spectacular power and he influenced one of the greatest magic user to do good, holy hell it's some of the powerful shit I have seen
YuuAserora yeah, i know. i’m on episode 132 and i’m used to it. i love the show, but the manga makes things a lot more intense like the fight between charmy and aqua deer dude
I'm gonna come clean, I'm midway through season 2 and I haven't really liked any of them. Anything I heard just felt like screaming just for screaming and became more annoying than anything else. And it's not the fun kind of screaming, either, just like with Asta, but he's a character, not a reused theme song I have to sit through or just skip it, them get 1:30 of ads. Also, the number of theme songs also kept me from getting attached to any. Then again, I don't really like any anime themes other than a select few... *cough* One Punch Man *cough*
5:10 ironically enough I actually found some interesting "philosophical" concepts on the base of Asta's behaviours in conrtrast to the demon Astaroth which its commonly believed his demon is based on and how that's portrayed given his status as kind of a successor of shonen. Astaroth is a demon that tempts with laziness, self doubt and rationalizes them, the very antithesis of Asta's hyper shonen personality as Asta never gives up and believes he can become great. We see the contrast most evidently when Asta first encounters his demon as it tempts him to give up by method of self doubt however as u know Asta doesn't just give in to self doubt so easily.
One of the most refreshing things about Asta is just ... the dude doesn't fucking let baggage drag him down. Orphan, simping hard for Sister, trying his damndest despite not having magic, the dude is just a wellspring of positivity. He completely subverts most of the "woe is me and my horrible upbringing" type main characters and just is a good dude who wants to make the kingdom a better place. Like, if he was some Marry Sue he would be a trash character who is perfect in every way, but he fails, often, a lot. He earns his progress, which I feel is true for the rest of the cast (except Yuno, because well, he's Asta's Marry Sue foil and absolutely is played up for this aspect). It really does breath some good life into a stale genre in my opinion.
I'm one of the action animators for Black Clover, I'm glad you enjoy the show! everyone in the staff is doing their best to produce good action episodes!
Glad you like the series, I've been watching it since release and i definitely agree that it starts slow but holy crap it picks up the pace. I forgot the artists name who first did the "block style" fights but I think it expresses how powerful some of these mage's are so perfectly
Glad you Enjoy the series, I hope people will lose the stigma of watching BC is the equivalent to committing a war crime, and start watch or read the series
BC is by no means perfect, it has a bit of filler, the story isn't anything new, and the animation quality isn't the best. But it does have some amazing fight scenes, and very lovable characters. I'd give the anime a 7/7.5 out of 10 However the manga doesn't have a lot of these issues. 8.5/10
I really don’t understand why everyone is agreeing about the fight stuff the later fight are fucking MISERABLE like I can’t see a fucking thing it’s like watching a Michael bay movie except he did 4 lines of cocaine before he made it.
There are currently only like 4 or 5 episodes of pure filler out of the 120+. A lot lower than any other shonen, which i appreciate. It is unoriginal, but it is a fun watch lol
If you only watch shounens you will hate the beginning and think the current stuff is ok. If you watch literally anything outside of shounen its pretty bottom of the barrel even now.
im actually surprised that i was able to sit through the first however many episodes he spent screaming the entire time. glad i did tho, it turned into a very enjoyable anime, for me.
yeah, the first episodes was what got me to quit the anime, the screaming with combination with the quirks shoved in got me to. I want get back into it in but there's so much episodes that I can't catch up at this point
I'm a little disappointed that you didn't talk about how good they make team fights look. Like most animes that show a group/team fight either make it look like a bunch of individuals just doing what they do when fighting alone, but just one after another or they make the attack combinations bad. But Black clover really gets team work and fighting as a group right. The best example i can think of is Asta, Finral and Vanessa fighting Vetto. Their Use of Portal magic, Thread magic and the basic attacks were really amazing imo. The fight against the Demon was a good team fight too. They don't make it look like DBZ where they fight as a group , get blasted, then a character (Goku 99% of the times) gets some shit awakened in him and blasts the opponent
I love how they spirit of BC is in "family". They really take the time to give us ample character interactions and reinforce their relationship with eachother. Lik especially the Langris and Finral fight when the rest of black bulls rush in to protect finral. They really give us the opportunity to be empathetic and be a part of them. Like they actually spend time with eachother than just purely action. I feel lik the last time relationships are given time like this was probably only in Gintama.
@@swab.9399 yes. They give attention to some details like that which makes a good impact. i also like that they focus on almost every character's back story and resolve, specially for Black bull members, where most of them felt like an outcast and failure before getiing in black bulls, and now they work to better themselves, both individually and as a group
I think what makes the Black Bulls interesting is that at the beginning of the show, all of the characters do have these one-dimensional, pretty negative traits. Luck is a psychopath, Vanessa is an alcoholic, Finral is a womanizer, Gray and Gordon are very shy, etc. All of these characters get development, with Luck becoming more grounded, Vanessa quitting drinking, and Finral trying to stay loyal to one woman. Gray and Gordon don't get as much attention but they start to come out of their shells as well. You get to see this character development happen to almost every cast member without it feeling too scattered or paced poorly.
I was hoping for charlie to talk about the unkept mound of manly meat mass that is yami sukehiro and how he just basically tells everyone to do the “go beyond their limits” trope.
I honestly couldn't agree more Asta's shouting in the beginning was absolutely dreadful however i've learned that this was mainly due an inexperienced voice actor (This is his first ever VA role). I am glad i stuck through the screaming because yes it isn't very unique like you said it takes parts from other shounen that we like and puts its own version about it. Also my only other slight complaint is how Yuno keeps getting so much stronger everytime we see him but it doesn't show how like it does with Asta. Watch Black Clover and put up with the screaming earlier on because he stops doing it almost completely and his voice grew on me and I really liked it. I am currently on episode 133 but I am literally going to watch more right now.
I stopped watching the first 12 or so episodes because of how similar it was to other Shonen animes, but after hearing a lot of great things about it I might reconsider watching it.
It took a while to get its footing but its 5th arc is when it gets very nice. It just recently had a godtier arc with all kinds of races being introduced. Its worth a watch for that
Try "Made in Abyss" next, it's one of those anime thats diffrent from the usual norm and is even having a movie shown in theaters later this year. (United States) I'd actually put it in my top 5 if I'm being completely honest.
Super_Gruesome Listen, I love MiA as much as the next guy. But the MCs being pretty much naked at one point is hella weird, especially because they’re kids.
@@TannerTheDean oh the toilet right, yeah that was pretty fucking weird. It's a shame because the story is really interesting and the art is unique. I hope the anime censures all the creepy shit and focuses on the good parts

The worst thing about the characters only having one quirk is that every time you see all of them on screen, you already know each one will get its little skit we've already seen a thousand time already, it just feels like its filler to make episodes longer in a repetitive way
Ehhh I find it unique. It could be like a Fairy Tail Erza situation where she gets her 1 deep character arc and when the growth is supposed to develop with her not doing the quirky shit anymore due to said past she overcame; nope instead it get retconned and she is still doing the same thing. Leaving her character hollow for the rest of the series as she already went through her huge arc. What Black Clover does well with these quirky characters is that they dial it up to 100 with said quirk and it's honestly an interesting dynamic to the Character's standing in the team and interactions with the main character. Plus it stays to its strengths with the characters development tying into battle scenarios. Examples of this are Guache, Noelle, Finral, and Zora. They act like their classic selves in comic relief moments in the show but get serious when the situation calls for it. Plus their admiration for Asta doesn't feel forced in the slightest. So what I'm saying is that Black Clover takes a realistic approach to character developmental arcs, where someone isn't going to 100 percent change in characteristics overnight.
@@Ko_clips yeah one of the reasons I dropped the show. It just pisses me off when the female characters got anger issues and always hit the main (male) characters over absolute shit. that being said I might read the manga hoping it is more bearable. tho I don't mind a tsundere who isn't an absolute bitch and doesn't hit the mc every second they're on screen

Yeah, I enjoy how Black Clover is a pretty "generic Shounen" as that's the what I like to see! I watch anime to get pumped and Black Clover does supply that
@Notime 25 For example Noelle is a way better love interest than 95% of shounon love interest (and actually has her own arc that is more significant to the story than Ochako’s almost irrelevant poor background).

@Kevin N yeah but I kinda started binging before quarantine so I didn't have much time but then I ended up finishing pretty quickly after quarantine started
@Kevin N I've taken a break from one peice so I cant remember exactly where I am but hxh is getting harder to watch because the next arch right after greed island started off really really good and has been going strong but towards the end it's so fucking slow because it took FOUR EPISODES just for three minutes in the hxh world to move which is ridiculous and Gon has become super unlikable towards the end. Killua has honestly been the saving grace for me because he's become an amazing character and there are some pretty cool newer characters.
@Oblivion Yeah, hate to disagree. that's the most comom critic that was created by fandom what shonen are original? JJK? DS? MHA? BLEACH?DB? dude, that's shonnen. ALL are generic in therms of the very basic foundation of the story. Is like calling Black Clover generic because all problems are solved with battles (battle shonnen). you know? I only ask you to reflect on this, to see if you are not repeating someone elses generic opinion. For me BC is very original in a lot fo chooices, plots and even in the setting. It subverstes the stereotypes like the one with the MC and his Rival. PS: anime quality is really crappy most of times. :(

We see the contrast most evidently when Asta first encounters his demon as it tempts him to give up by method of self doubt however as u know Asta doesn't just give in to self doubt so easily.
agreed. astas overwhelming courage and persistence unironically inspires me
One of the most refreshing things about Asta is just ... the dude doesn't fucking let baggage drag him down.

However the manga doesn't have a lot of these issues.

Yeah i stopped watching for a while, around the time asta and magna were playing fire baseball. BORING. Then it got better.
Likewise. I'm looking forward to it's progression~
Later in the show, Black Clover starts to become its own thing. Of course it still takes inspiration from other shounen jumps.
Agreed, the way they use combos that doesn't look like it would go together is pretty neat
He isn’t necessarily a womanizer, just a flirt
Gray and Gordon got some huge character development in season 3 and 4.

And now Black Clover op13 was #1 on trending for TH-cam
The worst thing about the characters only having one quirk is that every time you see all of them on screen, you already know each one will get its little skit we've already seen a thousand time already, it just feels like its filler to make episodes longer in a repetitive way
Spot on!
Yeah in some episodes (early ones) there's just times that is worse probably because as you say to make the episode longer.
Yeah and the anime makes it worse
AAAA I've been looking for a way to explain why I don't like this show.
