I admire your skill. Personally, however, I would be quite concerned about flooding at your location because of the stream and highly probable flooding from heavy rains and/or snowmelt. You are definitely braver than I am!
You can use dry grass or hay or the dry roots of that tree (but not the thick roots) to strenghen the mud. simply add them to the mud and mix them well. then use it. especially I would suggest using that to plaster the walls as it saves the woods from burning and keep the warmth and and keeping the away from the logs...
