    If your a beginner I recommend starting small so you can learn and get a feel for the hobby and not get overwhelmed. So many people have these awesome ideas in there heads and start out going way to big and run into motivation problems and budget issues. This hobby is not cheap your either all in or not. So start small get a feel for it and go from there.

    Hi Tom: I about to do track laying after completing my benchwork. I love you detailing out all the tools that will be needed. I also love your practical comments about problems you have faced and how I can avoid them. I have seen several of your videos and have not subscribed so I can see all of them. Very educational -- and entertaining at the same time. Thanks so much for doing this for "newbies" like myself. Building a model railroad has been on my bucket list for 60 plus years and at 79 I have now started. Kind regards - Dean Danielson

    Tom, thanks so much for these videos. Not only for the wealth of information but you have a get for teaching in that you take a step at a time from beginning to end. So often people making these videos forget the guy who knows nothing and they throw.something together and say, "that's how you do it" which leaves you wondering just what they did.
    I know NOTHING. My wife told me when she was a kid she always wanted a train that went around the Christmas tree but her parents never got her one. My wife never wants or asks for anything so I never know what to get her but here was my chance. I started researching and the more I did the more interested I became. I got the engine and cars, extra cars and passenger cars, track plus extensions, mountain scenery, trees, gravel, grass etc. All very good quality. Then....I didn't know what to do and most videos just made me more confused so thanks for such an easy to understand and follow series it's a God send.

    Bought the N Scale Primer around 1968-69, and probably still have it. John Allan's book was sold out and was "unobtanium for a long, long time. Hopefully it's back in print - I used to love seeing articles in old MR copies about John's layout. Addendum, March 2021: Model Railroading With John Allan: Used, Hardcover starts at $116.81. Paperback, used, starts at $81.96. OUCH!

    I would add here that a good source of information is your public library. My local library has a nice selection including John Allen's book. And of course, you can also find books on local and national railroads. If you can't find it yourself, ask the librarian for a catalog to see what's available in their system. BTW_ Some lumber yards carry plywood in the ping pong table size of 4ft by 9ft dimensions.

    • @TomsTrainsandThings
      @TomsTrainsandThings  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bullettube, that's a good source. Your lucky if you have that many at your library. Here in SW Florida the shelves are stocked with golf, boating, and shells. lol Thanks for the lumber yard tip also, I didn't know that!

    I watched my father build an HO layout, including buildings, and railroad cars. For much of my life I have desired to have my own layout; however, life got in the way. Now I'm 75 and retired, I think I may go for it. I really liked the information you provided in this video. I will attempt to watch your other videos. Time is limited in that I am building my dream cabin with an 8x20 hobby loft. I think there is room for an n scale layout up there.

    • @TomsTrainsandThings

    lots of helpful info in this video Tom. one other thing people can do is if they like 2 or 3 different smaller layouts they find in the books, they could always join them together to make one layout, as far as me, I have to find a way to look up past railroads here in Ontario, the yard I wish to build is completely gone, and Conrail is St Thomas in the 1990, not a easy plan to find, at all

    • @TomsTrainsandThings
      @TomsTrainsandThings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your continued support Sparky. That was a great idea about combining 2 or more track plans together. Have you tried the link in the description section for maps, it shows all current and past tracks up to a certain point. www.openrailwaymap.org/

    • @sparky107107
      @sparky107107 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      how do you change the date on that map, I need 1988 and the St Thomas Ontario map, and that would be the excact rail yard I need

    • @TomsTrainsandThings
      @TomsTrainsandThings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think you can change the date on the openrailway map. It's current rails and some older lines. Did you try the historical society?

    I’m new to model railroading and really enjoyed your beginner videos! I have made about 9 wooden buildings in HO scale so far. Im anxious to start but don’t have a track plan or even a train! My husband wanted to give me a train for my birthday but the only thing I know is that I want a HO scale steam engine. Do you have any suggestions on which brand?

    • @TomsTrainsandThings
      @TomsTrainsandThings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome aboard! Glad to hear you made some buildings already. If you don't want too break the bank in the beginning, a good place to start is Bachman. They have many steam locomotives to choose from.

    Tom, I bought the N scale Scenic Ridge kit from Woodland Scenics. I have everything except the N scale track part of their kit. When I called to order the Track Kit I was told it may be 2 months or more in availability.
    Because there are rather tight curves in this plan, I wonder if there is such a thing as N gauge Flex track that could be substituted in place of the track kit they supply.

    • @TomsTrainsandThings
      @TomsTrainsandThings  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flex track can be used in any situation. I prefer that over the sectional track

      There are many variables for an around the room layout such as Scale, room size, and budget to name a few. There are many resources in this videos description with links for track planning.
      Any advise beyond the video on track planning would require more information from you..
      For someone in Georgia, I'm not sure where in Ga Jonny lives, but you can reach him through the TH-cam Model Builders Web Site team members page: www.youtubemodelbuilders.com/team.php He may know someone in your area or point you toward someone that could help you build your layout

    Is it possible to combine different brands of tracks together, Peco, Atlas, MTH? I see that people are selling used track at the local train shows. I guess I need to know if the connectors at each end of the track piece are standardized by the industry, rather than being proprietary so that you will stick with one manufacturer.

    • @TomsTrainsandThings
      @TomsTrainsandThings  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can mix and match track manufacturers as long as the code is the same. The only difference in the track may be in the thickness of the web and base. Some rail joiners are tighter than others, like Micro Engineering, have the tightest joiners as opposed to Atlas. They all work together but you may have to crimp or expand the rails joiners depending on the rail make.

  • @brentseizer1019
    @brentseizer1019 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It was very frustrating for me to get the right size of track to finish the loop, or to get the track to line up with the 180 degree curve. Is it possible to manually cut down a piece of track by 1/2" or extend a track by 1-1/2". Im not sure how I would graph this custom cut track into the layout.

    • @TomsTrainsandThings
      @TomsTrainsandThings  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always use flex track to make things fit a little easier. They normally come in 33" or 36" lengths and can be curved to any radius and cut to any length.

    I have a question:
    I am planning a lego track with points (the old blue track), but I want to build it in a way that the train drives on all tracks without me having to set the points manually. Lego points do not snap back to their old position if a train drives over them like Märklin.
    Like when you build a straight track with points and loops at the end: o---------o. Do you know if this is possible with more than two points?
