Dave Gilibank interview with David Godman

  • On January 24th 2021 I was interviewed by Dave Gilibank. He runs a group for recovering addicts that focuses on surrender to a higher power. His TH-cam channel, entitled 'Here's Tom with the Weather,' includes interviews with several spiritual figures on the topic of surrender.
    His channel is here:
    / @herestomwiththeweathe...
    Dave started off asking his own questions, but as the interview progressed, he included queries sent in by viewers who were watching it live.
    In two places the film jumps a little. This is because of technical issues, one with the internet and one due to a slight camera malfunction. Apologies for the slight lack of continuity in these places.

    I have read all of David’s books and blogs. I have watched all of his TH-cam videos and for me David is my teacher. For me when David speaks I can hear Bhagavan talking through him. The amount of insights and clarity he has given me I will never be able to put into words. David is a true gift from Bhagavan. Thank you David, but most importantly, thank you Bhagavan 🙏

    In my 20s I ploughed through Buddhist books from different schools of thoughts and got more confused than ever - what is right, what is wrong, what is the middle way?; then was bingeing on Conspiracies stuffs and watched most of the videos on Gaia. Then I stumbled upon Mooji, then Papaji and Ramana Maharshi. Throughout my life since the start of 20s when I start university there is this deep sense of spiritual hunger. After immersing myself with Ramana's materials, the "I" now can't help it but BE quiet. I no longer have opposing thoughts in my head about the matters of career and relationships. Surrender and let things unfold. Everything is done, just enjoy the ride. I would like to thank David for this channel and the books you wrote.

    What David said about being led to Ramana is true for me. I was following another method for many years and then 22 yrs ago I had a vision of Ramana, I didn’t know it was him. I was then re connected to a previous meditation teacher I had in 1982, and he introduced me to Ramana! I haven’t looked back!

    Many thanks to both of you for this great interview. A rare insight into David Godmans's own perspective, very inspiring. Also , a certain other interviewer of spiritual people of could take lessons from Dave Gilibank into how inquire without making it look like a grilling. There are three interviews on the interweb of David Godman that made me feel very uncomfortable with his almost aggressive approach. So kudos to you Dave G for your gentle style.

    I was introduced to Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi by David Godman. I was born in India and I did hear of Bhagwan many times but did not know much about his teachings. Now I know Bhagwan through David Godman and Arthur Osborne. I have many of David's books. I have watched all of David's videos on TH-cam. David explained how to practice faith by handing over your problem to the higher power. I have full faith in David Godman's words and Bhagwan's grace. So I paused this video and just passed on my problem that has left me broken and defeated over the last one and a half years. My numerous attempts got me no success.

    I think a more direct and succint answer to David R's ("from west coast as well") question is: yes we circle back to "ego I". After all there is only one "I". As Ramana says (in the booklet "Who am I?", p.19, answer to Q.10) "... like a stick used for stirring the burning pyre, it will itself in the end get destroyed. Then there is Self-realization." In this statement stick is the analog of "ego I." I may be wrong.

    If you "Do" self-inquiry, you will do until your death. In doing there is a doer, that is, MOTIVE. Do you SEE how thought has tricked you all?
    I have heard David Godman say in one of the videos that once a man asked Bagawan,"I have done self-inquiry for last 25 years and I have not attained anything, and Bagawan seemed to have replied, in that case, do it for another 25 years".
    The only fact Bagawan is trying to help you SEE is the fact that "I" is just a thought, it is NOT independent of THOUGHT.
    When thought is not there, is there a thinker? Thinker and Thought are one and the same. For example, a computer that you use or a mobile phone exists whether you think about it or not, but the "I" is there when there is no thought? "I" exists as long as thought exists. The final answer is "I" is just a THOUGHT. It's not a reality. Just grasp this TRUTH and be extremely alert. The day will come automatically but you may not know when and where. Alertness! Alertness! Alertness! That's all you can do.

    I left a long comment this morning. Now it is gone. Oh well... I wish I had copied and pasted it somewhere so that I could repeat. I'm really disappointed. Nonetheless, thank you David. You're a blessing to me.

      @@sebastiandsouza5916 From the decades of association with my Satguru Ramana whom 'appeared' to me since 1977 in USA, Puerto Rico and India ..i haven't seen His stature in any of later personalities like Nirsagadata, Papa (Poonja/ i left out the 'ji' which is not part of a name, but self promotion. Like Moo 'ji' )
      He that feels the Divine Presence of Lord Ramana does not need nor gets interested in nonIllumined so called physical 'Gurus'.
      Only unripe sadhakas feel that they 'need' a physical and doubtful Guru.

    Just a comment - The host, at the end, just shouldn't have announced who the next guest is going to be while David Godman is still on, it just commoditizes the whole talk/experience, which has been so special all along. Might well could be a cultural issue tho, but my 2 paisa FWIW.

    Hello good people. David mentions the name of a swami I've never heard of before (at 17:47). He spoke of him as being the last of the direct lineage. Could someone please tell me how to spell his name. Thank you

    • @GovanRear
      @GovanRear 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe you have already found the answer but David is talking about Lakshmana Swamy.

    • @lucyhartman1501
      @lucyhartman1501 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's important to understand that Ramana left no lineage. The individual Lakshmana Swamy was simply the last remaining old devotee that was at the ashram when Ramana was alive. Ramana did not have successors, not did he claim any living person to be Self realized. He authorized no teachers to carry on his teachings. Not Papaji, Not Lakshmana.

    Thank you David. My only concern is that, if life is really good for 99% of the life, and only 1% of suffering, why would I want to be liberated? I’ve not quite decided if I want to be liberated or not. I do feel like I have one foot in the material and one in the spiritual- I’m quite confused tbh

    I prefer to do enquiry when out walking, starting with visualising the mind being put to one side on a shelf. After about an hour the level of thinking is reduced to a trickle. Then I do enquiring - something happens which I can't put my finger on but when I have to start thinking about worldly things again, it's like putting on an ill fitting suit! Quite uncomfortable!

    We might be battling the unknown if they don’t - Once you know Father Christmas isn’t real, you can never get back to believing he’s real again ??? Not knowing what had happened would have been intolerable - I’m finding that there’s something else going on, nothing to do with reading a book ??? - It’s strange, it’s like it’s not in the words but maybe it wouldn’t be happening without the words ??? - It’s definitely not in the ideas and yet maybe it wouldn’t be happening without the ideas, maybe it would be, people go on silent retreats !!! And that’s the system itself - The things/objects are over (Cloak) emphasised and the awareness is under-played - (Thus awareness is not being conscious, it’s what we’re conscious of - To tell you your trapped by inferring that there is a you which could be free to think there’s a better way -
    But there’s an ideation of an image called selfing - The mental state points to the after as being the before - (Language emphasis there is an us and uses the subjective experience to make an object of ideation IE: Your the all that’s been thinking about)
    But there isn’t a self doing the selfing that implies there’s a self doing it - There’s a mechanical system doing: Thus is reinforcing the nouning that your not - Not. ‘Knot’
    Mamma has died in the night - Looking from the bondage of self (As self) - Contracted energy or pseudo eye strap from chest to head over cloaked by a superimposed phantom which orchestrates the Trinity which actuates the body.
    It may have a real importance to being wrong because it will be right about how wrong it believes you are, so your wondering why your messing things up because then it can be right about how wrong you are. Narcissus and Hermes Trismegistus),
