The church is located in Santamaria-Orlea village, 3 km from the town of Hateg. The church is distinguished by its age, competing as the oldest active church and the oldest painting in Romania. It has a complex history that still hides many questions especially regarding the early years of existence. It is an imposing building, built of stone in the thirteenth century. It takes the form of a rectangular nave, having to west a square bell tower with 5 levels. Is built by passing from late Romanesque to Gothic early style, so-called Burgundian style, spread by monks of the Cistercian Order in the second half of the thirteenth century. Of those who founded the church are two versions. In the first version, it was built between 1270-1280 by Catholic Hungarian colonists settled in the area at the end of the thirteenth century (the period during which the Hateg area was integrated in Hungarian Kingdom) Arguments are the Romanesque-Gothic architectural style, inscription in Latin, and the presence of consecration crosses painted under the Byzantine painting. In the second version, the church was built by local Orthodox believers, before of Hungarian colonization, arguing with historical data, painting in the Orthodox-Byzantine style (but acceptable for Westerners) finished in 1311, with the Cyrillic letters and Oblation (niche) stopped. In 1447, John of Hunedoara, ruler of Transylvania gives the Santamaria village (including the church) to family Cândea lords, locals Orthodox. They complement the altar painting, building on the west side the balcony (with adjacent painting) and turn the church from parish church in the court chapel. As historical circumstances have forced them to convert to Catholicism and took the name Kendeffy, the church became Catholic. After 1555, with the religious reform, Calvin-Reformed church becomes. In the period 1642-1869, the church painting was covered with lime. Mural painting of the church is particularly valuable and interesting.
