i distinctly remember my mother threatening to destroy my Black Parade CD because she claimed it was making me depressed? (you can guess what was actually making me depressed lol). very nostalgic retrospective for me watching this
I wrote out the lyrics to Mama when I was in highschool, my mom thought it was a death threat and still didn't believe me after I played the song, she also believed Alaska was in the center of the ocean with a clean cut line, right next to California, so...
The theatrics of MCR (The Black Parade) hit a sweet spot. It's grandiose, without being pretentious. This album is an experience, not just a compilation of songs, and rarely is there an album that does what MCR did on this album. New, younger listeners will come across this album first, likely for generations. It has become a timeless staple.
Bro, Ive always considered the black parade go be very “bohemian rhapsody”. Glad to hear someone echoe that. It’s the millennial generations’s bohemian rhapsody. Any millennial hears one piano key *plink* and instantly, fam or no fan, we know what song it is.
I discovered this album recently after losing a close friend to cancer. I genuinely cannot express how important this album was during my healing process. What an amazing album from an amazing band 🙏🏼
I was at the MTV $2 bill show where they played a lot of the black parade songs before the record came out and everyone knew the words (it was magical) and at the record release show in Ford's, NJ. very special time for me!
that's so awesome! i never got to see them at the time unfortunately. was supposed to see the black parade tour but my family went on vacation or something lmao. forever regret that!
@@thecozyrep oh no!!! Talk about timing! So sorry you never got to see them on that tour. For the actual Black Parade tour at the local arena my friend and I got there at 5am and doors weren't until I believe 7 that night. It was snowing/sleeting all day. The band actually bought us early birds (about 15 kids or so) food and coffee/hot chocolate from the Wendy's next door. We were front row in between Gerard and Ray. I'll never forget that show!
Yeah kinda disagree with Cozy’s take that it’s not a singles album…other than Mama and maybe Cancer, p much every song is radio ready…even The End+Dead as 1 song
To “twig” just means to catch on, to suddenly understand. “They twigged that he was on about the new album” = “They suddenly understood that he was on about the new album”
As much as I love Bullets and Three Cheers, The Black Parade is My Chem at their best. From the playful nature of Dead! (Who knew you could write this catchy of a song about someone dying and no one caring?), to the tear jerking Cancer, to the pure chaos/storytelling of Mama there’s just so much to the record, outside of the singles that are in themselves fantastic songs, even almost 20 years later, when other albums from the era haven’t aged nearly as well. We weren’t ready for this album when it came out, and we’re still learning to appreciate just how special it was all these years later.
… waiting patiently for a Danger Days video … I just found your channel after seeing MCR live and now I’m in a deep dive. So glad I found your content!!
Would like to hear your take on Alesana's story. "The Emptiness" album is easily one of the best concept albums out there, it aged really well just like The Black Parade. Definitely one of the most underrated bands of the emo/posthardcore scene.
Ah I remembered back then they were much bigger than AA, And now it's just sad how they became smaller and unknown They're the band that got me into heavier music 😅
@@eatass5627 Uh...ok? So because MCR (In your opinion) writes better songs than Alesana, they shouldn't be covered? I mean look I love MCR and especially The Black Parade era as much as the next guy, but that's all down to personal taste my guy. I love heavy music, and just that reason alone makes me enjoy Alesna more. I also cannot agree to saying that MCR are overall better songwriters. I would definitely say that MCR's bigger and more impactful tracks are better written than Alesana's bigger tracks, but when you look at other albums in MCR's catalogue vs Alesana's, I think they take the W for more albums that had an overall better collection of tracks. A quick and obvious example, let's go with rheir album "The Emptiness". That album as a whole, is a masterpiece of not just songwriting, but performance from the two vocalists with cleans and harsh screams. The concept of it with the story it tells, the incredible lyrics, the transitions and breakdowns, to me it's better than TBP. And the most important part, because many bands can come up with a good conceptual album and have good lyrics, BUT they songs themselves are not good...well, SONGS to just put on and listen to even disregarding the story / lyrics. The musicianship is vastly stronger from Alesana than MCR. Vocals, guitars, drums. Just way more talent coming from them, and it's better than any full album experience that MCR created for me. AGAIN, I LOVE MCR AND TBP. But let's not pretend Alesana wasn't anything other than an incredible band that absolutely influenced a ton of bands ever since.
Black Parade is just so good. I had a late MCR "phase" (I never left lol) and this album carried me through so much during my teen years. My mother of all people introduced me to them! I love learning all the history man, your channel is awesome :) Also I'm so here for this House of Wolves love!!!
The "Helena" dance routine was only done once, btw. And speaking of Panic, I've always said that Brendan Urie wishes he was Gerard Way and Brandon Flowers. For those interested, a great deal of what is relayed here can be read in the booklet that comes with the deluxe CD and 180-gram vinyl editions of Parade.
Ayo dude, I wanna let you know I found your channel recently and I've been binge watching your vids ever since! I wasn't part of the scene at that time and it's really cool listening to these stories being told by someone who was Actually There. The way you do it gives off very chill vibes and it feels like I'm listening to a friend talking about their interests instead of an essay-type vid on yt! Love your work, very cozy indeed
This album will always be my favorite album of all time and will always hold a special place in my heart. I was introduced to this album around when it first came out when I was like 5 from my mom who had the cd and listened to if all the time she loved MCR. Famous last words is one of my favorite songs of all time that I actually have the chorus I am not afraid to keep on living tattooed on my arm because my mom loved that song as well and she passed away last year so this album and band holds a special place in my heart because of my mom
The Black Parade Era was such a strange time for all of us kids into the darker side of things - MCR was easily as big and as well known as Rhianna or Justin Timberlake, and yet liking them still somehow made you an 'outsider'. They were on MTV and heard on the radio, but it still made people scratch their heads and go "how the heck is THIS popular?" The album I remember was treated just as oddly - there was a surprising amount of praise not just from The Scene™, but from Serious Music Critics who wrote for Serious Music Press. And there was just as much derision and even hate from them for MCR and this album being 'everything wrong with music'. Now it's being retroactively adored by those same people as one of the greatest releases of the 00s, and yeah we can be a bit smug about it, now. PS. MCR on The Black Parade tour in 2007 was the very first concert I went to by myself. Truly a transformative moment...mostly in that I'm pretty sure I permanently damaged my ears. But my story's not unique there I'm sure.
How I see it is that teenagers actually does fit the story, it’s kind of like an origin story for the patient showing how he didn’t fit in as a teenager and didn’t appreciate life before he was diagnosed with cancer, as the story goes
So, I was at the show they did the night before the album was released at Vintage Vinyl. After the show we were all given a copy of the album and got to shake hands with the band (because it’s the most time they can spare on like 100+ kids in a tiny record store). It was the most magical time in my 14 year old life at the time. I listened to it at lunch the next day.
Always love you saying British things lol To "twig" basically means to suddenly understand something. It's basically saying, the crowd one by one starts to understand that it's My Chemical Romance.
I have absolutely loved all these Fall out boy, panic, and Paramore videos , they are among my favorite on TH-cam . But MCR is my favorite of these bands so naturally your videos on them really are something special on TH-cam. I was really excited for this video for a long time, and then suddenly on hands down one of the worst and most difficult days I have had in a very long time you just happen to release this video absolutely saving it . Thank you so much for making your videos, they are amazing, and so much fun to watch , especially these long era type ones. :) Also are you planning to make a vices and virtues era from Panic or Riot from Paramore anything soon .
wow that is so awesome to hear!! thank you so much and i'm glad my video could have a positive impact. hope your week gets better! and yes i'm actually planning on making videos about both of those albums soon :)
You're not allowed to skip any songs! It's a package deal. I only really listen to this album in the Fall time because it just has that feel to me of autumn. Like the days are getting shorter, it's get darker earlier, and it's getting cold outside. But also because I had a few relatives all pass away one fall about 5 years ago. I listen to this and think of them. This always results in me having a GOOD cry and it always makes me better afterward. It kind of hits the refresh button on my soul in a way. I sincerely hope everyone gets as much out of this album as I do.
I don't really care what topic Julian covers, I just enjoy watching the Cozy Representative. Seems like a humble guy who doesn't take himself so serious, but works hard and makes good content.
Watching that first performance of Welcome to the Black Parade was the first time I used TH-cam in 2006. Best band ever. Best album ever! Love the video Cozy!!!!
Thank you for directing the queer emos (me) over from Twitter! Great job. I always feel like you’re a homie at a party dropping some deep knowledge on me.
Potential hot take: I think Disenchanted might have been a better closing song for the album (but that's just semantics... this album is absolutely amazing)
One of the best albums ever. MCR really took things to the next level, every song is great and it’s diverse enough that they’re all great for different reasons. I’m right there with you on House of Wolves. That one, Sleep and The Sharpest Lives are my top three from the album. Famous Last Words, Dead!, Disenchanted, so many stone cold classics. The album was a true phenomenon, a game changer really. So ambitious and well executed. I was going to see them at Projekt Revolution 2007, but I got super sick that week and it was just about the worst-timed sickness of my life. Loving the content lately, I’m very much looking forward to the future Danger Days video, I think that album is super underrated and not talked about as much as the others.
So my first concert ever was supposed to be my chemical romance and taking back Sunday at the Allentown fair in Pennsylvania in 2006/7. I had seen the “mcr will not be performing video” so when the show began they said mcr wasn’t gonna perform I got so excited. Turns out dumb Bob Bryar got hurt and they legit didn’t play. One of the darkest days of my life.
Thanks for another awesome video :). Love these so much. Maybe one day you could do a Hawthorne heights or Silverstein video ? That would be awesome too :)
Great video brother! We need some history on real emo bands tho, like sunny day real estate, cross my heart, red animal war, Appleseed cast... you know the whole deep elm compilation era! Would love some history on the emo music that inspired what is now called emo music!
Yeah! MCR has always been considered "emo" even though it's hard rock with a bit of metalcore influence in the sound and emo influence with the lyrics, so some real emo would be great to talk about!
Back in 2007 or 2008 when I was about 18 my ex and I had a friend who was working Emos for that year's SXSW here in Austin and she called us up yelling for us to get up there cause MCR was going on in about an hour. This was literally right off the back of their first headlining arena tour, so getting to see them at such a small venue after having just become some of the hugest rock stars on the planet was mind blowing. I don't think anyone knew they were coming on, it was a surprise show. She only knew cause she had been working backstage and heard another artist playing mention it. So just imagine, this smaller sized Austin 6th St venue packed with a big SXSW alternative crowd for a free showcase loaded with a bunch of other Jersey bands. A number of guys dart on stage and before it had even been long enough for most of the crowd to register who it was the opening guitar riff and then drums from I'm Not Okay starts blasting from the monitors. I have been to 100s of shows and I've never felt that kind of energy from a crowd before or since. I have no idea how the staff kept it as quiet as they did but almost no one knew they were even in Austin, let alone playing. That crowd ERUPTED. Genuinely one of the best live music experiences, probably the actual best, I've been in person for. On the topic of the song The Black Parade, it makes me think of something my musician husband talks about. He says most musicians have a song in them they are meant to share with the world. They could spend their entire lives chasing that song, but never getting it exactly right. The ones who are able to write it exactly how they picture it are the true geniuses in music. The Black Parade is that song for My Chemical Romance. I don't even think that is something I need to speculate about. It's evident they made a masterpiece with that song.
i cant believe how much your channel has grown these past 2 years! from short curly hair to long locks and luscious beard ❤ you'll be at 100k in no time
Great video I’m so glad it’s finally up, these last months have been darkened for me with the itching question of when Cozy is gonna do his Black Parade coverage.
I finally got to see them live two weeks ago, after a decade of feeling like I missed out on something great by not seeing them before they disbanded. They played an incredible mix of songs from all four main albums, plus two from Conventional Weapons and even closed with Desert Song. I have to say, you nailed this era exploration, Cozy! I had no idea about the haunted mansion, that shit is cool as hell. I love how geeky this band is LMAO. Your comment about the single choices being weird piqued my interest, I've always seen the four they chose as the most logical. House of Wolves would have been an interesting one for sure, but I don't think it would have charted any better than I Don't Love You, and I like that they went with a ballad. Dead! would have been my next choice for a single, anyway. Peace out and stay emo!
The Mexico happened in 2007, october 7th. They didn't play Bullets songs in the Encore, only Revenge. From 2008 to 2009 the shows were more mixed with songs from all 3 albums, even newer for what would later become Conventional Weapons. The set in Mexico for Revenge was then released as Venganza! in 2008-09 but only on a bullet casket shaped usb with a bulletproof vest from the merch. The Black Parade will always be my favorite album. Wished you went more in depth with the social situations concerning the record still this was a lovely video.
hey cozy !!!! thank u for this vid it was dope, whipped out the tripp nyc jacket for this nostalgia trip respectively 🫡🖤 i have a question for ya; would u consider doing a deep dive on dance gavin dance ? ik u did a jonny craig series but the band itself has such a stellar discography and quite the history... would be interesting to see u dig up some info for it and splash in some input on the member's new projects too (i.e royal coda or jon mess' art). it would have enough tea and bangers for days lmao. appreciate u always tho king !! 🌈✨
Maybe most MCR fans would choose Three Cheers as their favorite, true, but I think the legacy of this album exemplifies that music consumers in general would def choose TBP.
The journalist has used "twig" in a bit of a weird way but basically twig means catching on to something, realising. So if something was happening around you, and you hadn't realised yet, I'd say "haven't you twigged yet" or "didn't you twig?"

You dont know how long I was waiting for this one, I love your videos and that def safed my day
Nothing better than a Cozy Representative video
Would love some history on the emo music that inspired what is now called emo music!
that would be cool! definitely wanna start expanding to more OG 90s stuff in the future :)
@@thecozyrep that would be a great video idea
Dude amazing in-depth analysis on the album and era. Great vids
The killswitch engage clip at the opening had me dying 😂😂😂
cant wait for the danger days one i love that album
I've always said, the Black Parade isn't an album you listen to. It's an album you experience.
Omg I just discovered you and I already love your videos.
So glad this is finally out. I’ve been dying of anticipation!! Thank you!! ♥️
ah buddy i've been waiting for this one
What Mikey could have said is, “we want THEIR entire world to be moved,” referring to the fans
Been watching you all week to prepare for this i am ready!
nice! thank you! :)
Thank you for the best bed time story ever .
hi!! loved the video, are you planning to do one on Danger Days and MCR's breakup?
i agree that the single choices are strange, but man the b-sides are so good
Pt4 when? Pls. I need my medicine.
Best vids on TH-cam 🐐
hey cozy !!!! thank u for this vid it was dope, whipped out the tripp nyc jacket for this nostalgia trip respectively 🫡🖤
i have a question for ya; would u consider doing a deep dive on dance gavin dance ? ik u did a jonny craig series but the band itself has such a stellar discography and quite the history... would be interesting to see u dig up some info for it and splash in some input on the member's new projects too (i.e royal coda or jon mess' art). it would have enough tea and bangers for days lmao. appreciate u always tho king !! 🌈✨
FANTASTIC VID!!!
Maybe most MCR fans would choose Three Cheers as their favorite, true, but I think the legacy of this album exemplifies that music consumers in general would def choose TBP.
great video man!
today (october 23rd) this album turned 17 and so did i
This whole time I didn’t know Rob was at the Paramour with them!!
i played that CD until it couldn't be played anymore. this album is one of those albums that "made me"
one of the best albums of all time from start to finish!
Greatest album of the 2000s
Can anyone tell me which performance is the clip at 41:00 from?
It’s from the 2007 EMA’s (I’m 4 months late I’m sorry)
Hey cozy, would you please consider doing a rise and fall of victory records!?
That house was also used is Halloween H20
Purple Hearts are like a poppier Falling In Reverse to me. The guy looks like Ronnie and has the charisma to go with it. I'm a fan bro.
Can we get a vid on Daphne Loves Derby?
I love it!! Fantastic content
You should have mentioned TBP b-sides when talking about the singles
I clicked on this so fast❣️🖤
You know I will say I much as The Black Parade album changed my life. I still hold Danger Days even closer to my heart.
awesome! i will def be making a danger days video as well in the future :)
House of wolves is my second favorite mcr song only behind cemetery drive definitely the low key best song on black parade
I’ve always postulated that this album is far more glam rock than emo.
WOE IS ME IS BACK MY GUY!
I saw them on the Prokekt Revolution 2007 tour!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
When's the Danger Days Video?
Great work!
God bless you!
SOLI DEO GLORIA

anyone know who that is playing with the band in the closing video? he’s replacing frank.
Hollywood undead MySpace vid?
Can you do a video on the band 1997?
When I saw this I clicked so hard and so fast I almost broke my phone.
I cant stop watching mcr history vids..
The journalist has used "twig" in a bit of a weird way but basically twig means catching on to something, realising. So if something was happening around you, and you hadn't realised yet, I'd say "haven't you twigged yet" or "didn't you twig?"
purplehearts sounds good
