    Perfect video! My filter clogged up after a storm and pool guy wasn’t due out anytime soon. After watching your video, I successfully backwashed my pool, added DE and turned it back on. It’s all better now. :) I’ve owned a pool for just shy of a year and never had to do this before.

    My filter looks just like yours, with different controls. To flush mine though, there's a drain plug at the bottom that I unscrew and all the dirty water drains out. There's a faucet on the outgoing pipe that would allow air in to drain faster. I just have to cycle that two times and the water going into the filter will be much cleaner.

    why is it when I switched to backwash it pushed out all the dirty water through my jets instead of my outlet source? do I need to close skimmer and switch to main drain or something? You didnt show that part on this video.

    • @pduhovic6184
      @pduhovic6184 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just shut the jet valve after you shut the pump. Then turn to the backwash position. And at the end of the rinse open the jet valve

  • @randyfisher6509
    @randyfisher6509 ปีที่แล้ว

    All my searches for backwashing turn up is for sand or DE, what about for regular Hayward filters? And my pool doesn't have all these valves everyone talks about. If it was so simple, I wouldn't be searching for how to do it!

    Thanks for posting this video - confirmed what I thought. Interestingly enough, what a change in DE filters. The last one I had I had to bump the filter once a month and then change out the DE annually. Now it is a quarterly (assumption) full change and according to the instructions, change out the DE semi-annually. Does that seem right? Again, thanks for the informative video.

    hi- I am an owner of a pool and not a professional... anyways, i tried backwashing my pool and thought i did it right (turned off the pump), however, when i turned it back on, the pool said the PSI was at 0. What do i do? did i break something? i am a little panicked

    • @shaggyeverington5373
      @shaggyeverington5373 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably put it back to filter before resetting it can destroy a DE filter. Whenever you change settings you always turn off the filter from whatever power source you’re using

    Can you install a back wash filter to a quad d.e. Earth filter. Mine doesn’t have one. We have to manually clean filters

    How often do you backwash the filter ?

    • @AmericanPoolandSpaKY
      @AmericanPoolandSpaKY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Paul, our recommendation for backwashing a filter is every week or two; this is also dependent upon how much use the pool is getting and how much foliage (yard trimmings, leaves, small twigs, etc) is getting into your pool.

  • @mt00a
    @mt00a 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The amount of D.E added after backwash depends on the surface area of your filter. Check your model to see how much to add. This video doesn't explain that essential part.

    From your returns. "returns, returns returns". I have been watching many pool videos and this is the term that annoys me most. Some say the the "returns" are the main drain and skimmer "returns" to the pump and some say the "returns" to the jet nozzles to the pool. From what I have learned there is an "incoming" to the pool pump (from the pool) and an "outgoing" from the pool pump (to the pool). Maybe if these videos specified more clearly it would not be so confusing to the layman like me.

    • @AmericanPoolandSpaKY
      @AmericanPoolandSpaKY  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Roy and Thank you for watching! We try to answer most questions and concerns customers have. I can see your confusion in the pool industry so allow us to clarify.
      A pool and/or spa is circulation of water in and water out that should be moving all the time. On a pool specifically you have the following.
      1) Pump: the pump sucks water. Meaning the pump is what we call "suction".
      What is on the "suction side?"
      A) Skimmer/s
      B) Bottom Drains / or Fiberglass Pools wall drains (still bottom drains).
      NOTE: These are the only things that can sucks water and connected to the pump.
      Next, What is a "RETURN?" A return is any water going back into the pool.
      Example: A return can be installed in the pool wall (most common); any water features such as, deck jets, waterfall, fire bowls, bubblers, ect.
      Anything called a "jet" in a pool or spa is considered a return. Anything that is going back into the pool or spa is a return. Anything on the suction side means it's attached to a pump because it's being sucked.
      I hope this helps and gives you more clarification.

    You guys are so wrong. First you backwash rinse backwash rinse and backwash rinse. Just one backwash will not cut it. Next you need to know how big your filter to know how much DE to return. It is not cup size but pounds or volumes. There are smarter pool guys out there.
