Thanks a lot for watching Craig. That's the thing I was most disappointed about and I couldn't find anyone who had even tested that feature out. Not many people shoot their camera reviews in complete pitch darkness. All the low light and high iso videos I've seen testing the A7s3 are in the middle of a city at night.
I am just starting out in astrophotography and was looking for a very unbiased opinion until I got your video, I will stick with the Nikon Z 6 as it fits my budget and will allow me to photograph objects such as nebulae and galaxies, thank you Richard.
Marvellous! As I'm about to return to astrophotography I'm so happy to find your channel! Your compositions and the way you share your experience are exceptional! Instantly subscribed.
Hello Richard.....and now your videos will be even nicer to watch being cleaner ,brighter and sharper with your Sony A7s3 , thanks for continuing to make your channel better!!! I have a Canon sl3 that has a articulating screen and I love it, I also have a Nikon d750 and d780 that as you know only flip up which can be difficult to see in portrait mode low to the ground. Fantastic job comparing the two cameras, the pictures looked great!!!! Take care, looking forward to your next adventure!
I've been a Canon shooter for 40 years now so I've always said that Nikon was the dark side. :) I do think you did a good review, and the captures were outstanding (per usual).
A camera is gear. Cheeky comment or not, there is no dark side - that's just brand tribalism ;) Case in point, I shot Canon for 20 years starting with film. I loved my Elan 7e, and after that my 20D, 7D, and 5diii. Switching to Nikon opened my eyes to the fact that the camera is a tool. I still have the 5diii, but I prefer the look straight out of camera that Nikon has as well as the ergonomics. I wish they'd kept some of the ergo from the D750 though in the new Z line. While digital photography means that you invest in the "film" at the time of purchase and therefore brand is a component, I've been more impressed with Nikon/Sony since the D750 era than with Canon.
Unashamed Nikon fan boy here and I have no doubt in my mind that that Sony is probably the best 4k video camera in its class. But I really appreciate your approach to breaking down It's strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, I simply couldn't justify that much of a price tag (here in the U.S. it's also the cost of 2 Z 6's) for a dedicated video camera as 12 megapixels aren't enough for my needs in terms of stills. Thanks so much for your great content. Long time subscriber first time commenter. Cheers
Hey Randy, I really do appreciate your comments. I absolutely agree about justifying the price/performance thing. I shoot videos every week and it's a big part of what I do. I certainly wouldn't be able to justify that expense if I wasn't doing that on a regular basis. I still think the Nikon Z system is completely underrated .. it's a great camera. Love the Nikon lenses also.
the same could be said of Canon....& yet I had a mainboard fail on my 5D2 for no apparent reason, & I had an AF motor pack up in a 17-35/2.8 L lens. Nothing is failure proof with electronics
Thanks a lot Steve. I love my Nikons also and I see no reason to change brands all the time. I have a specific need for the Sony but for my general photography it's Nikon all the way.
I so much appreciate the effort you put into your teaching videos, they are excellent. I learn more practical information from your videos regarding astrophotography than from anyone else. Keep inspiring us, I love it, thanks Richard!
I'm glad you found the perfect camera for your video's and as you say they are a big part of what you do so for that l think your onto a winner as the clips look great. The Z6 is such a great little performer for stills so l'm glad to see you have no plans to swap it out... as far as Canon goes l wouldn't even bother but l have always had Nikon so perhaps l'm alittle sentimental and biased 😉
Thanks Leigh. What you're saying is so true. We always tend to stick with what we started out with. I've used mainly Nikons myself but have a lot of experience with other brands as well along the way. It is horses for courses . .but I also love the Nikon Z cameras and I reckon they are way underrated.
Thanks Richard. I have purchased the R6 and really enjoy it's capabilities. Big step up from the 6D MKII. I need to get out more as I enjoy trying out techniques you provide in your videos.
Thanks a lot Milorad. I am very serious about my video productions. I've been shooting video for just s long as photography. I also do some other video work from time to time.
Richrad I've always like Nikon for its dynamic range and colour it produces. Sony looks pretty good and a lot would say it's a better system, but the z6 is a great camera and you make bloody amazing images from it. You thinking of the z6ii?. Also I personally think nikon glass is the best.
Thanks for having a look Jeremy. I love the Nikon as well .. especially the Z mount lenses. I'm not looking at upgrading to the mk2 yet .. maybe down the track I'll retire one of my D750's but the price is a lot higher than the original Z6 at this stage.
Oh yeah. Only 12 mp and a 4x digital zoom. Not a camera you want to be reaching for a regular basis for astro, though it can do it. I said it last time and I'll say it again, what a freaking awesome video camera for low light! It's really impressive and your production at night is going to be so much higher quality now. Great video.
Great vid Richard - currently looking between the Z6ii and the Sony and that flip screen is a considerable factor when operating alone, with my Z6 I use the wifi remote with a mobile phone just to check that the focus is working correctly & composition is good etc. As the Z6ii has majorly improved autofocus (it no longer changes focal plane when loosing lock) and I’m more into the photo’s than video for me that looks a better option. Great to see the comparison as it has helped in making my choice :-)
That was quite a comprehensive review for us nightscape photographers, Richard. I don't shoot with either platform but it was very interesting hearing about what features you look for, and how the Nikon and Sony models compare. As for you coming to the Canon "dark side", I won't hold my breath! 😉
Haha, well there's nothing wrong with a "Dark Side" perspective . .especially when talking about night photography ...!! Always appreciate your comments Doug.
Very helpful video. I was sitting on the edge and cud have regretted my decision if I had invested into A7Siii. 4.1X is a big one for me considering stills and nightscapes. No one talks about it. 12 megapixels is another one that puts me off. Seeing the comparable images I would have expected Sony images to be more brighter at the same ISO when compared to Nikon but did not see any significant change there either. Great review Richard specially for all those nightscape and astro shooters
Thanks very much Chetan. Yes I would not recommend the A7s3 for still images alone. I'd say the Sony A74 which is due for release in 2021 would be the go to camera.
Agree with you bigtime on the price of the SIII. I'd love the articulating screen for shooting low down portrait orientation shots and hopefully the a7iv and subsequent models have this feature.
fantastic job! I still haven't had the chance to go out and shoot the aurora here yet, weather has been blocking the really good displays hopefully soon. I did go out and shoot a whole video just using moon light and fire light (coming soon) and the A7sIII does some amazing stuff in low light... Some day I'll get to shoot the Milky Way some day...
Thanks a lot Jake. I really appreciated your great videos on the A7s3. I guess you have the trade off where you live .. lots of epic scenery but tricky weather conditions to negotiate to get out there. All the best mate.
Thanks Gavin. I'm not sure if this is something that may be changed via firmware but I did find it odd considering they had a larger max magnification in the previous "S" model.
Now THAT's a proper review....one that is based on practical examples and real experience. Seeing you with a Sony made me uneasy at first, but I managed to deal with it. Moving to a Canon?! I'll need to have a lie down when that happens!! :-) Great video, as always, Richard. Many thanks.
Thank you for the awesome comparison between the Sony and the nikon. I am a Sony shooter and I was sitting on the fence in regards to the Sony G lens 20 mm 1.8. But after hearing you give great praise to it, I think I'm going to get one!!! I have the Sony A7R mark 3. I want to do some night photography this coming next year. I will be using many of your techniques on capturing photos of the milkyway. I absolutely love your night time photography. I saw Allen's video a few days ago and his work is very impressive as well. But now after seeing how you both feel about this lens, I think it is going to be my next one. Thank you!!!!
Great comparison video Richard! I hope you get to compare the Z 6 against the Z 6II someday. Mine will be delivered on Tuesday! I can't wait to try it out. 😁😁😁
Hi Richard great video as always. My weapon of choice for nightscapes is the Sony A7iii with a Zeiss Batis 18mm f2.8. I find the bright monitoring feature (i have it assigned to a custom button) really useful for composition.
I was looking at the K1, but it’s gone up in price even though it’s a 4yo camera. Thanks Australia tax. You can get the A7R3 for the K1 retail price. A7R3s just have that star eater reputation though
As usual many idea's and things to pick up for my own TH-cam video's... the important thing is COFFEE ... we do a lot of waiting around so coffee is a godsend.. many thanks for your informative and inspiring work.
Thanks a lot Mike. Haha, yes the coffee breaks are a really vital part of any road trip for me .. and I'm sure for you in the studio as well. Take care mate.
Excellent and honest review .. and it sounds that you possibly may want to investigate the coming A7IV when it’s released .. more of a photo camera at over 24 mp, less of a video camera in that it probably won’t have 4K 120fps.. but it will have the same awesome autofocus and likely a articulating screen with the new menu system.. not that you need to switch systems .. but you might find it to be the best hybrid mix of both stills and video..
Thanks a lot for watching Mark. Yes I think you are spot on regarding the upcoming A74. It will no doubt have the best of both worlds. We are very spoilt for choice as photographers these days aren't we ..!!!!
excellent review Richard. All your points are spot on. I would love a flip screen on my A73, more zoom and a bigger screen too. Maybe the A74 will have it?
I'd be more interested in what the A7S3 does when you push it as opposed to a like for like image (where you've done the same exposure settings with the same spec lenses, I'd honestly hope there would be no difference aside from the end file).
Thanks for watching. From what I'm seeing the A7S3 isn't any better than the Nikon for still images at all. There really isn't any need to shoot crazy high iso stills with either camera. The Z6 is really comfortable up to 20,000 iso but I rarely need to push it that high. As I mentioned in the video, it's when recording video that the Sony is a lot better.
Richard - thanks for all the info. Based on it, I would save my money for a Z6 upgrade (not to Z6ii) or more Z lenses. My need for a flippy screen is taken care of by a few on camera 5" and 7" monitors I have.
Hy there my favorite nightscape image channel. I want to tell you that the S from Sony are in fact for video 90% if you want for pictures that will beat the Nikon at every thing you can buy Sony a7R IV that is a best for pictures and videos. Like every time great video love the work and details that you put in your video’s ! P.S sry for English it’s rusty !😁😁😁
Well RIchard, I have been waiting for this video for a while and it didn't disapoint me. I must admit, the videos on the sony looked terrific. I am also sure that in most other respects, it holds up well too. For me personally I will stay with the z6, mainly because I have invested in some good glass and don't want to duplicate equipment ( I am only doing this as ahobby ). I can understand your need for the sony, after all, you do make videos professionally. I also believe, there is no such thing as the perfect camera, every one has good and bad points and each person must decide what is important. Personally the d850 was nearly the perfect camera but I never bought for one reason, the wifi was crap. For me the Z6 was a big leap of faith but I haven't been disapointed, the glass is awesome, low light capabilities great. I too would like the flippy screen but more so backlit buttons, this would be super. One day, when the z25 comes out, we may get all the features that satisfies everybody, and all that for maybe 1500$ ! As for your comparison photos, on TH-cam they looked identical, it would be interesting to see the originals at 100% to compare detail and noise, maybe you could post a couple of the original single shot pics ?
All very good points you make David. I agree that the Z6 is pretty close to the perfect camera for shooting nightscapes. I guess we all have different requirements and that's quite ok as we have lots of choice out there in the camera market. Always appreciate your perspective.
Morning Richard, as you said the main reason you got the Sony was the articulating screen for video. Stick to that as your reason for buying, I looked into Sony when I bought my Fujifilm and price was a factor the Sony at the time being far more expensive and for the glass too. Much preferred the Nikon images you showcased.
Thanks a lot Carl. Yes they are really pricey . .especially here in Australia. I reckon the Sony's with more megapixels would be better for still images than the A7s3. I'm sure you're happy with the Fuji's ..!!
Excellent review Richard, i wish you could do a review of Nikon Z5 for Astrophotography. It would be very interesting to watch how Z5 compares with Z6.
Hi, as beginner I am also thinking to buy a Sony A7IV or the Nikon Z6II for Nightscape and Timelapse. And cannot decide 🙂 I would easily decide for the Nikon, but for in the most reviews in internet I see the Sony lenses are better for astronomy purpose. I see from your equipment list you also use Sony lenses, but I wonder why dont you use the very good Sigma Art 14mm f/1.8 or the fantastic Sony 24mm f/1.4 GM? Do you have any doubts about using this lenses with the Nikon camera? KR
Thanks so much for watching. Both systems are excellent for nightscape and astro photography. I use the Sony A7s3 for all my video production but I prefer the Nikon Z6ii for shooting photos. I do own the Sony 24mm f1.4 GM and it's a great lens. Having said that, all of the Nikon Z lenses are incredible and I particularly love the 20mm f1.8. The Nikon has the edge in timelapse.
Good review even though I’m a stills shooter and don’t need the flip screen. Have you ever done a comparison between the updated Z6 and your (mine also) D750? I’m still wrestling with whether to update within Nikon’s low light leaders.
I haven't done a direct comparison. The D750 still holds it's own very well against the later models. I still have 2 off them which I mainly use for time lapse and star trail shooting.
Thanks for watching Rune. If you mean how do I stop my lenses from fogging up with dew . .I use lens warmers such as this. www.amazon.com.au/COOWOO-Upgraded-Warmer-Universal-Telescopes/dp/B0773M7Y98/ref=asc_df_B0773M7Y98/?tag=googleshopdsk-22&linkCode=df0&hvadid=341792345759&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13429949212205040842&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9071496&hvtargid=pla-834649760300&psc=1
Hi! it would be great if you did a "how to set menus on nikon z6 for nightscape photography". in any case, I thank you for the work you do; i am learning a lot from your videos. a greeting from the Italian Alps .. and sorry for my bad English
Both of the camera lens combos are 10x better than what I have (Fuji X-T2 and Zeiss Touit 12mm f2.8), but the real difference is that your knowledge and skill are off the chart better than mine. If we went out together and I used your setup and you used mine you would come back with better pictures. My biggest room for improvement is to go out and shoot with what I have...alot.
Pete, I've recently purchased a Canon EOS R6 specifically for my astrophotography, and so far, it hasn't disappointed. My first test shot to check my composition was at ISO16000 and the noise levels are very good. At normal ISO of say 6400 like what is common for Richard to use, the images are pretty bloody awesome 😊 Would love to see Richard go to the "Dark Side" and try one out 😁
@@memarkmc If I can get my hands on one .I'd love to go to the dark side ...!!! Sounds like an awesome camera though. How many times can you digitally zoom in live view ..???
I am using a Sony A7Riii and have had great results. I did find that I had to play with ISO more to get good shots. I started with a Sony A6000 and got hooked.
Thanks a lot for watching Jay. I have a suspicion that the iso values vary between camera brands. I've seen that mentioned before somewhere. Also I've had first hand experience where people using the A7r3 had a much brighter image at the same iso from others using Canon and Nikon full frame cameras.
Hi Jay what lens are you using? What ISO is best? I want do some night photography next year. I shoot with the Sony a7riii. I think I have been convinced that I need the Sony 20mm 1.8!!! Thank you!
@@marvinspates924 I use the Sony 20mm/f1.8. As for the ISO, I follow Richard's guide as a starting point. My last shoot the highest ISO I shot at was 800 but it was a bright moon. For my foreground I was at 400.
Excellent comparisons Richard, thanks for showing the two. As a dark, dark side user of Canon :), I do like the Canon R with its larger articulated screen and before buying it did compare it with the Sony A7riv, though in daylight, found the colour straight out of the camera, slightly better than the Sony. In saying that all three brands are amazing cameras! thanks again.
Thanks very much Alan. Yes there's no doubt the Canon colour science is excellent, and as I mentioned that larger fully articulating screen is a sure winner. I don't think we can go wrong with any of the new mirrorless cameras . .we are very spoilt for choice.
Hey there, I was toyin with the idea of trading my 14-30 f4 for the new 14-24 f2.8 z lens....but thinking I may stick with the f4 and get the 20 1.8 instead.
Hey Jake, all of the Nikon Z mount lenses are awesome. The new 14-24 f2.8 will be amazing but it's horribly expensive. I know a lot of people doing incredible work with the 14-30 f4. I absolutely love the 20mm f1.8S lens.
You are better off with the Z 14-30 f4 and Z 20 f1.8 combo vs just the Z 14-24 f2.8. The Z 14-30 is a better overall (all considered) zoom lens vs the Z 14-24 f2.8, and the Z 20 f1.8 is the very best FF wide or ultra wide prime or zoom of any brand on the market. That combo offers you the flex and the destroyer. The Z 14-24 f2.8 offers you a series of uncomfortable compromises in the middle that is actually more expensive than the other two combined. The truth is that the use case of each of these (an ultra wide to wide zoom and a fast ultra wide or wide prime) are exclusive. The Z 14-30 f4 and Z 14-24 f2.8 do not replace the Z 20 f1.8, and vice versa. If you got the Z 14-24 f2.8, you would still want to get the Z 20 f1.8.
As a really poor amateur photographer, the Z6 is way out my budget. Sony is, by any means, absolutely out of my reach. But I really like to hear you talking about those systems because I love the way you work, and I have no doubt you are talking with absolute sincerity. Maybe when the Z6II comes to market the Z6 could be for me a realistic desire... Thanks for your videos, Richard. And please forgive my poor english!
Thanks so much for watching, nothing wrong with your English my friend. I'm sure the prices will drop as the newer models come out. If you're looking for a very good cheaper camera . .try searching for the Nikon D750
I've heard all sorts of wonders about the D750 from photographers I really admire. That you tell me too only confirms that the praises are right. Thank you, mate.
Nice comparison, thanks. With each new Panasonic release, I hope they will "fix" the autofocus, but I am starting to loose hope. Sad to see Sony catch up and pass them in almost every way (except Ibis). Still love my G9 for walking around, a great small package with 3 lenses in my bag.
I agree Steve. I actually love using the G9 .. it's so well built and the handling is about perfect for a camera. Not so good in the low light and high iso performance however. Thanks for watching.
Got some very good astro pictures of Orion nebula and constellation on the new Nikon Z6ii. There are no videos yet on the internet for astrophotography for the Z6ii. Milky Way season is over so its just the Orion and Pleaides for just the Z6ii and Star Adventurer. I tested the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8, the Nikon Z 20mm F1.8 and Rokinon 14mm F2.4 for the Nikon Z 6ii. The Sigma is too heavy to carry around and had lots of astigmatism at 14mm. Rokinon has lots of coma but a less heavy. The Nikon Z 20mm had best performance when stopped down from F1.8 to F2.8 and was lighter. I will return the other 2 lenses. I used the back button to magnify the stars to focus on the Z6ii with the red light indicator when the stars are in focus. Its still not exact on the Z6, but very close. Focusing always seems to the be issue on the Nikon Z lenses. I am thinking of testing the Nikon Z14-24mm lens for astro. No one on the internet has done it yet.
Thanks a lot for your insights Charles. I really do like the Z cameras especially when coupled with the native Z mount glass. I actually have a Nikon Z14-24 f2.8 lens at present on loan and I'm testing it for nightscapes. This will be a future video. It looks pretty good but the price is out of this world .. literally.
Thanks for watching Andrew. Yes that's true but more stuff to carry around. The Bahtinov mask is more suited to longer focal lengths as well. Appreciate your comments.
Thanks for watching mate. I think it would be a closer battle between the Z6 and the A74 (Coming soon) or even the A73 as they are closer megapixels. It's pretty obvious when using the A7s3 that it's a video camera and that's why I bought it anyway. I would say the A74 when it's released will be an amazing camera for just about everything . .especially if they incorporate some of the stuff in the A7s3.
That video was vary helpful!! I do landscape and nightscape photography. I'm shopping for a new camera now and I'm considering between the Nikon Z711 , Sony A7R111 and the Sony A7V which is a 61 MP camera. I have heard that a high MP sensor at high ISO may show more nosie. Could you share your thoughts on this. I'm going out to Utah and California USA in the spring. If you ever come to the US to shoot and want a detailed (to the exact spot) where a lot of good Milky Way pictures are, let me know. Thank you for your advice on the cameras.
Thanks a lot for watching John. It is true that the higher megapixel cameras will show some more noise but I've found this pretty easy to control with noise reduction. The Nikon Z7ii is a wonderful camera and you won't be disappointed with it. The Sony cameras are also very good but I prefer the ergonomics of the Nikons.
Thanks for the video. It's a really nice comparison. It will be interesting to see the same test at ISO12800, since the Sony A7S3 has dual native ISO and the picture quality will significantly improve going from 6400 to 12800. Did you use any light pollution filters for these photos or is this straight out of the camera?
@@nightscapeimages.richard That's great to hear, I just got the a7s3 for xmas and hoping to gradually get back into astrophotography, so it’s good to know it can carry it's weight :)
Thanks very much for watching Robert, I'm so pleased you like the channel. Really appreciate your comments. I'll have to see if I can get hold of one of those new Canons.
I think the zoom mag on the Sony A7s3 is limited to 4x because that puts the image 1:1 with the LCD. The other A7s magnify more because they have more pixels.
Thanks for watching Qwiv. What you are saying makes a lot of sense . .except that the previous model - A7S2 which is also 12 mpx goes to 8 x magnification.
Hey Jonathan, I'm not noticing anything I'd describe as "Star Eater" at all in the images. But you may have to compare it to another Sony camera. I'm sure Alyn Wallace will be able to check that out in his testing.
Thanks Richard.... there’s a lot of imagers out there moving to Sony over Nikon for astrophotography, I personally don’t see any advantages over the Z system. I can’t speak for the Sony as I’m embedded with Nikon, but I do know that using the EVF in MF on the Z6 is helping me create sharper images, sometimes hard with the position of the camera, but LV also gives sharp results. Keep up the good work Richard, and look forward to the next one 🙂
I am coming from Canon (crop sensor) and I've always loved to have a flip screen. When I changed to the Sony A7III (no "S") I still think this flip screen is really something that is missing. Having heard that the S model will have one I was really pleased that Sony had change their approach. However, as you correctly said... the "S" model is extremely expensive. So I won't have a flip screen but I am absolutely happy with my A7III and the Sony 20mm F1.8 you showed in your review as well... happy shooting and many thanks for the review! :-)
Great review Richard! Welcome to the “Dark Side” of Sony Cameras!.....lol. I’ve got the A7s3 on order (primarily for video). I had no idea about the limited zoom function whilst using manual focus. As you probably know I shoot most of my Astro & landscapes shots on my Sony A7riv which at 61mp is fantastic. I’ve also just acquired the 12-24f2.8gm lens which is fantastic for milkyway timelapses where I want to get everything in. Although this lens was expensive (I got 20%off) I’m super happy with the the results it gives. BTW, for your information, the Bluetooth remote for the Sony cameras is great & works well. You can access clear image zoom from it & it has a custom function button as well.Once again, I love your work & thanks once again for a great review! 🙏🥰🤗👌😀👍
Thanks heaps for your comments Nash. You'll love the A7s3 as it will fit your existing workflow like a glove. You've got all your bases covered with the A7R4. I would really like to get the Sony 24mm f1.4 for my video work but I need to work a lot harder to afford it. Those good Sony lenses don't come cheap that's for sure. Sounds like that 12-24 f2.8 is awesome as well.
Thank you !! Great review as always. I was wondering if you ever have a chance to check the Panasonic Lumix S5. As is a competitor to the Sony A7III. I started Milky Way Photography with A lumix GH5 Which I have it for video. Now I am thinking of buying a Full Frame Camera and I am considering the Lumix S5 For video compatibility with My Lumix GH%. But I wont if it is not good for Milky Way Photography. In all reviews looks like isa good competitor to the Sony A7III but no Milky Way Photography Reviews so far. I am wondering if you have an opinion on it. Thanks a lot.
Thanks so much for watching. I love Panasonic cameras. I used GH 3 and G9's for video work for years. I've never used the S5 and I don't know anyone who owns one to ask. The thing that may be lacking is good fast wide angle lenses for it. Otherwise I can't see any issues with the Panasonic cameras for nightscapes. .but no first hand experience un fortunately.
Thanks a lot for watching Jerry. I do use a star tracker sometimes but not in this video. I just keep the shutter speed short enough to not see any trails. It's all dependent on lens focal length. I also do a lot of stacking which can assist as well.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Yes Thanks! just after watching the entire video I clicked on to the next video in my feed and it was the one where you pointed out the pros and cons of startracking which i found fascinating and helpful. You also offered two other people who have additional info on using the Star Tracking etc. etc. So you really put a lot of good tips out there for people such as myself who are just getting into it. Thanks a BUNCH!!!!!
I have (had) both of them. There were numerous advantages for the Nikon, but the low light for the stills was much better,in terms of S/D and DR. About 1 stops on the S/N on average and 1.3-1.6 on the DR based on our Photometrics. At 16,000 ISO, the S/N of the SONY is almost 8dB better. What ISO’s and PP were you using (and Yes, PP does matter with raw stills too)?
For the stills I was shooting mainly at iso6400. Picture profile Off. Creative Look Standard. Uncompressed RAW & Jpeg. For the video I shot mostly between iso20,000 and 52,200 Regarding noise .. for many of these shots I'm using Sequator to stack multiple shots to deal with noise reduction . .it works well. Thanks again Andrew.
Reading the other comments, something crossed my mind. A possible soution to the poor zoom on sony naand the non flippy screen on nikon might be the use of a third party app, such as dlsrdashboard via wifi. I have used this on nikons and it is possible ( atleast for stills ) to get a feed to a smartphone or tablet which could face forwards. It is then possible to zoom right in, also use focus peaking or zebras. I'm sure there are other similar solutions, also relatively low cost.
Thanks a lot for watching David. Yes I agree there are always third party solutions to camera problems .. I would prefer to keep it as simple as possible. I've already tried lots of different ideas for forward facing screens and loupes etc . .it's just a pain when you're out in the field at night .. cold weather and limited time frames to do all the shooting.
In order to evaulate ISO sensor performance you need a close up comparison of the RAW images using the same lens for both. This video is definitely useful but it is impossible to judge the actual sensor performance between the two as a viewer.
Great side by side comparison - Good job I had my Canon camera hidden away during the whole of the video, it would have cried its SD card out! Is there any particular reason you don't use an external screen clamped to the tripod with the Z6?
Haha, I'm glad your camera wasn't upset by this video. I have used an external monitor clamped to the tripod .. and in a studio it's fine (except for the reversed screen which is annoying). As well as that the Z6 doesn't show any settings on the external screen . .it's a clean signal out via the HDMI so i'm often unsure if it's recording or if the audio is good etc. When out in the field, especially at night it's just too much of a bother to worry about all the extra bits. It's far easier to have the simple flip out screen built in.
In your testing I think the Z6 still looked awesome at 51000 ISO and lets face it thats incredible ... the Sony is just a little more incredible in that regard but it's not really necessary to go that far. I'll be picking up a Z6ii shortly. I've been an alpha shooter since moving over from canon back in 2016 but I'm over the crappy ergonomics and my alpha suffers from star eating and sony doesn't care to fix it for the A7rii. I'm seeing more and more good reviews of the Z6ii as well as the Z7ii. Thanks for the testing I subbed.
Very informative. I own the same tamron and the Sony Lens amongst others. I came from Full Frame Canon to the a73. I am looking forward to your way on the dark side 😄
Thank you for a very in-depth review: I enjoyed it although I can afford neither! With the low noise video capability of the a7siii, I suppose you can turn the ISO up and dim your video lights down, and we'll be able to better see the stars behind you - that would be a nice aesthetic to your films when you're out under the milky way.
Yes that's exactly what I'd like to do more of Robin . .although getting that balance right isn't so easy when out in the field at night. Thanks so much for watching.
Hi Richard, very interesting, I couldn't afford either, even 2nd hand, lol. I noticed when you were filming with it, I could clearly see orion in the background. I think you may have to wait for your bank balance to catch up, to wander further into the dark side, lol. Always good to watch your channel, even on this, cameras way out of my budget, cos of your honesty and sunny disposition
Hi Richard, I have decided that when I upgrade I am going for the z6ii which now has the fully articulated screen. I can only afford one z lens ( I haven’t got any Nikon lenses),so for nightscapes 20mm , 24mm or 35mm ?
Hey Ann, the Nikon Z6ii is a wonderful camera but it doesn't have a fully articulating screen. It has the same tilting screen as the Z6. No doubt the 20mm is the most practical lens for nightscapes. I use it more than any other.
Great video Richard and thanks for sharing the comparison, I’ve been waiting to see this and there were some surprises I didn’t know about. You certainly have an awesome set up now using the Sony for video and the Nikon for stills, or at a pinch visa versa for an emergency. Cheers mate and thanks for video again 👍🙏📸
Thanks heaps Adrian. Yes I think you've hit the nail on the head regarding the versatility of both of these cameras. I'm sure that's exactly what I'll be doing.
What camera recorded you light painting? The Sony is pricy but sexy. I’ve always been a Nikon guy and always will but I understand your desire for shooting at night.
Thanks a lot for watching Josh. I used the A7s3 for all the night shots except when it's actually on screen itself . .that was with the Panasonic G9. I also love the Nikons and they are just as good or maybe even better than the Sonys for photos.
Hi Richard, a fantastic comparison between these two's. Appreciate your efforts. Just wanted to know your thoughts on Z7 ||; think it has not been yet rolled out, but I heard that's a best one amongst Nikon Z camera's range
Thanks a lot Nikhil. I think both the Z6 and Z7 are fantastic cameras. The mk 2 versions will be better again. It's pretty simple really .. if you want high resolution go with the Z7, if you want slightly better low light and video performance go with the Z6.
Nice video! I got sony a7siii n even though my eyes can see okay on 4x zoom but I do miss the 10x on my sony a7riii. Any tips on focusing on stars with 4x zoom on the sony siii? Would appreciate your feedback 😁
I find it a lot more difficult without the extra zoom. I only use very fast aperture lenses such as the Sony 24mm f1.4 and with that it is really quite bright and easy to see the focus change. Other lenses not so easy.
Hi Richard Don't forget the A7SIII has only 12mp so it has much less pixels available to zoom. My A7RII can zoom 12.5 times but coming from a 42mp sensor it's much easy to to than a 12mp sensor.
That's a really good question Luis. I'm mainly shooting video with the A7s3 so it chews it up a lot faster than just shooting stills. I think it's not too bad but not as good as the Z6.
As far as Canon mirrorless goes, the RP (26 megapixel) fits the frame. I'm also going to get the Canon M6 which is a crop sensor, 32 megapixel camera that should be good for wildllife photography with the Tamron 150 - 600 mm g2 lens.
I switched from Nikon Z6ii /Z7 to Sony A7RV. For nightscape I miss the Nikon because they focus on infinity automatically which is perfect for this scenario.
Allô! I was under the impression that you would say that the Sony performs better ... happy to know that your Z6 - and mine, by the way 😂 - are still "above" it! Anyways! The bottom of the line is : no matter what you’re shooting with ... if it’s the one you like. Who cares if one uses Nikon, Canon, Sony or whatever, as long as it’s what someone is confortable with it. The camera might make a difference as for full frame or cropped, but the thing is to be able to do something with it, no?! Thanks a lot for another great video and amazing pictures. Looking forward to get my 2021 calendar. 🥰👋🥰
Hey Carole, thanks so much for watching. You are correct about the cameras all being quite capable these days. I will post your calendar tomorrow. Thanks so much for your support.
No other reviews have mentioned the lack of decent zoom for manual focusing. Thanks for mentioning. Important feature for nightscape photography.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Wonder if it is due to the sensor's very low pixel count?
@@djack41 It probably is .. but the previous A7s2 also had the 12 mpx sensor and had an 8 x digital zoom.
I am just starting out in astrophotography and was looking for a very unbiased opinion until I got your video, I will stick with the Nikon Z 6 as it fits my budget and will allow me to photograph objects such as nebulae and galaxies, thank you Richard.
I'm glad you got something out of the video, thanks for watching.
Marvellous! As I'm about to return to astrophotography I'm so happy to find your channel! Your compositions and the way you share your experience are exceptional!

Thanks so much Tom, I certainly appreciate your support my friend.
Thanks so much for watching Gary, really appreciate your comments.
I've been a Canon shooter for 40 years now so I've always said that Nikon was the dark side. :) I do think you did a good review, and the captures were outstanding (per usual).
Haha, yes it's a little tongue in cheek for sure BlueWolf. . .I think they are all great cameras to be honest.
A camera is gear. Cheeky comment or not, there is no dark side - that's just brand tribalism ;)
Case in point, I shot Canon for 20 years starting with film.
@@ElGrecoDaGeek Thanks a lot for your comments. In the end it often comes down to personal preference .. and that's quite ok.
Yeah the Sony a 7siii is amazing mate I’ve definitely made a good choice
Thanks for watching. I use it for all my youtube videos and love it.
The durability and quality of Nikon cameras is unquestionable
Very true indeed Rogerio. Thanks for watching.
the same could be said of Canon....& yet I had a mainboard fail on my 5D2 for no apparent reason, & I had an AF motor pack up in a 17-35/2.8 L lens. Nothing is failure proof with electronics

Well done on the comparison video. I am happy that you recognised the benefit of the filly screen, now to test theCanon R series. Bring it on.
Haha, yes the flippy screen is wonderful Brian. Just the price of those Canon RF lenses . .wow ..!!!
@@nightscapeimages.richard the RF 35mm f1.8 is worthy of a review and for an Astro pano. It’s also modestly priced. Makes a great package
Great video, loved your comparison. I am so deep into Nikon, that there is no possibility of a change for me, and I am still very happy with my Z6!
Very kind of you to say Jeff. Thank you very much for watching and leaving the comments.
G'day Richard. Thanks for this mate. All the best for the coming week. Superb images as usual.
Thanks very much John, appreciate that.
Thanks once again for tuning in Spence. I'd love to get my hands on an R6 just to give it a run .. maybe one day.
I agree with what you say about the Tamron 24-70 mm g2 lens. I've used it for the last 18 months on the Canon RP.
Good on you John, I've always liked Tamron and Sigma art lenses.
Thanks for review. This only tells us that you are getting more serious with youtube production. Keep safe and keep shooting Mr. Richard.
Thanks again for watching. Even with this great camera it's really hard shooting videos at night .. a very time consuming process.
Thanks a lot for watching Brett. I think the Z6ii looks like a very solid camera that's for sure. I reckon you'll love that one.
One of the best and honest review thank you 👏🏻
Thank you very much for watching my friend.
Thanks a lot for watching Sico, really appreciate it.
fantastic job!
Starting point at 23:20, special thank you for beautiful watermark and huge white frame with astonishing shadows
Thanks a lot for watching green pale, I really appreciate it.
Yeah, having clarity at max magnification is VITAL especially for astro. Good video Richard.
Haha, yes I had to have a lie down as well Simon .. especially when looking at the bank statement ..!!! Thanks so much for your comments.
Thanks a lot for watching Marvin. You won't be disappointed with the Sony 20mm f1.8. It's also quite reasonably priced . .also small and light weight.
Thank you!!!
Great comparison video Richard! I hope you get to compare the Z 6 against the Z 6II someday. Mine will be delivered on Tuesday! I can't wait to try it out. 😁😁😁
Thanks a lot Jim. I'm sure the Z6ii will be an amazing camera. I'll be keen to see how you go with it.

Hi Richard great video as always. My weapon of choice for nightscapes is the Sony A7iii with a Zeiss Batis 18mm f2.8. I find the bright monitoring feature (i have it assigned to a custom button) really useful for composition.
Thanks a lot Bob, yes the bright monitoring is awesome with the Sony's. Appreciate your comments.
Great video as always Richard, the biggest reason not to get A7siii is its price
Yes I tend to agree with you my friend. Thanks for watching.
You are right.
I have watched your videos and I could notice the focus was hunting sometimes. Sony S3 should be your good choice.
Thanks a lot. In low light especially all cameras will struggle .. but this is better for sure.
Richard k1 Pentax or k3 have built in astrotracking Now that is the dark side I use the k70 for now.
Great work !!
Haha, yes they do. Good on you Jeff. Remember the camera is only a tool ...!!! Appreciate you watching as always my friend.
I was looking at the K1, but it’s gone up in price even though it’s a 4yo camera. Thanks Australia tax. You can get the A7R3 for the K1 retail price. A7R3s just have that star eater reputation though
sopheven yes but you can find a good used K1 and remember Pentax just keep running!
Both cameras took great photos 🤩👏
Yes they certainly do, thanks for watching.
excellent review Richard. All your points are spot on. I would love a flip screen on my A73, more zoom and a bigger screen too. Maybe the A74 will have it?
Thanks very much Kim, always appreciate your comments. Just out of interest, how much can you digitally zoom in on your A73 screen ..???

No worries Steven. As you say, we all have different needs. Appreciate you watching.
Hy there my favorite nightscape image channel. I want to tell you that the S from Sony are in fact for video 90% if you want for pictures that will beat the Nikon at every thing you can buy Sony a7R IV that is a best for pictures and videos.
Love ur work Richard
Thanks very much for watching Alpha Tango ..!!!
Thanks a lot for watching. I'd like to get my hands on a Z5 to see how it goes. I don't know anyone who has this model.
I know it’s not your preferred workflow but I would love to see a single shot comparison between the two when pushing the iso further than normal
That's a good suggestion Frank. I did add the one single shot comparison between them at the start of the images. Thanks for watching.
Thankyou. Just bought z6.
You will love the Z6
Good review even though I’m a stills shooter and don’t need the flip screen. Have you ever done a comparison between the updated Z6 and your (mine also) D750? I’m still wrestling with whether to update within Nikon’s low light leaders.
I haven't done a direct comparison. The D750 still holds it's own very well against the later models. I still have 2 off them which I mainly use for time lapse and star trail shooting.

Thanks a lot for watching Jay. I have a suspicion that the iso values vary between camera brands. I've seen that mentioned before somewhere. Also I've had first hand experience where people using the A7r3 had a much brighter image at the same iso from others using Canon and Nikon full frame cameras.

Excellent comparisons Richard, thanks for showing the two.
This is great comparison
Thanks very much Mohamed
Have you looked at the A7c for video ? Replacement for the G9, more pixels
Thanks for watching. I think the A7C looks like a great camera for sure .. haven't come across one yet.
It looks pretty good but the price is out of this world .. literally.
Many use a 10x mag loupe or a Bahtinov mask mask for astro focus.
Thanks for watching Andrew. Yes that's true but more stuff to carry around. The Bahtinov mask is more suited to longer focal lengths as well. Appreciate your comments.
Im surprised that the Z6 is better at photo, but only because how long its been out compared to the A7S3. Great vid!
Thanks very much for watching Eli. No I didn't use any filters in any of these shots. I was shooting in very dark sky locations.
@@nightscapeimages.richard
That's great to hear, I just got the a7s3 for xmas and hoping to gradually get back into astrophotography, so it’s good to know it can carry it's weight :)
Love the channel and would've to see a comparison with canon. Looking to invest in full screen and or mirrorless. Keep up the amazing pictures.
Lovely photos and very objective review. I am intrigued with the location. Where did you shoot this mate?
Thanks a lot Bernard. I shot this at the farm where I run my night photography workshops in Central Victoria Australia.
@@nightscapeimages.richard ah well. The only time I have seen enough stars was when i was in the Warrumbungles. Sydney has too much light pollution.
Great video. Did you encounter any issues with Sony and their "star eater" firmware on the A7siii?
Thanks a lot Ernie. I agree that the Nikon Z system is amazing. I love the Z6 and I think the system will only get better.
Thanks very much Stephan, maybe the A74 will have that fully articulating screen.
Nightscape Images ha ha. Thanks Richard, I’m gearing up for retirement next year, so after that, I’ll make do with what I’ve acquired 😀😝👍
@@nashhall694 You'll be set then Nash . .travelling the world now doubt .. or probably within Australia given the current climate. Good on you.
Can you explain if you are using a star tracking system or not? If not how do you avoid star trails? Thanks! Very nic video.
@@jerryeisner1 Always happy to help Jerry
Good video enjoy your Sony, thank you.
Which version of lightroom do you use ,if I'm doing a workshop need to learn to edit?
Thanks a lot Phillip. I use the latest Adobe Creative Cloud versions of both Photoshop and Lightroom. Lightroom Classic as it's known.
Yes I appreciate your comments Will. There are certainly a number of differences between these 2 cameras so it's almost like chalk and cheese.
Thanks so much for watching. Yes the z6ii is an incredible camera .. you won't be disappointed.
Very informative. I own the same tamron and the Sony Lens amongst others. I came from Full Frame Canon to the a73. I am looking forward to your way on the dark side 😄
Haha, thanks so much Matthias .. it's getting darker by the minute.
@@nightscapeimages.richard ah, that'll be excellent. I'm sure you'll get used to it eventually. Keep it up!
Awesome video mate
Thanks heaps as always Brad.
The Canon R5 and R6 are also impressive performers. It is a great time to be a photographer!
Yes absolutely. I think all the camera brands are pretty good these days. It's a great time to be a photographer.
You're always very kind and encouraging Suzanne and I very much appreciate that.
Yeah, I spotted orion too, but it was upside down - probably a quirk of those sony optics !
@@dhg1960 Haha .. we are down under after all David.
Interesting comparison video ..
Thanks very much for watching Wali
The best of all, when you enjoy a coffee under the stars!
Yes it's a great experience George.
@@nightscapeimages.richard thank you 😊
Hi Richard
Don't forget the A7SIII has only 12mp so it has much less pixels available to zoom. My A7RII can zoom 12.5 times but coming from a 42mp sensor it's much easy to to than a 12mp sensor.
Yes that certainly makes sense Jean-Claude but the earlier A7S2 can zoom in 8X .. doesn't make sense as that's also only 12 mpx.
@@nightscapeimages.richard The A7s II can only zoom 4.0 times.
@@janrolsenfoto A friend of mine has one and says he can get 8 x digital zoom.
How about the batery durability? In Sony it doesnt last to much? How it works in the A7s3?
That's a really good question Luis. I'm mainly shooting video with the A7s3 so it chews it up a lot faster than just shooting stills. I think it's not too bad but not as good as the Z6.
Great review - thank you
Thanks very much for watching Bianca, really appreciate it.
As far as Canon mirrorless goes, the RP (26 megapixel) fits the frame. I'm also going to get the Canon M6 which is a crop sensor, 32 megapixel camera that should be good for wildllife photography with the Tamron 150 - 600 mm g2 lens.
Fantastic John. I think all the Canon EOS full frame cameras would be great for nightscapes.
I switched from Nikon Z6ii /Z7 to Sony A7RV.
For nightscape I miss the Nikon because they focus on infinity automatically which is perfect for this scenario.
Yes I love that feature as well.
Allô! I was under the impression that you would say that the Sony performs better ... happy to know that your Z6 - and mine, by the way 😂 - are still "above" it!
Anyways! The bottom of the line is :
no matter what you’re shooting with ... if it’s the one you like.
