    I don't think that ever villain character HAS to be the antagonist
    Light Yagami from Death Note is the protagonist, and he's certainly the bad guy of the story

      That is very true! Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I think the term "villain" is subjective. Since Light is the protagonist, we see the story through his eyes, making him the "hero." In that sense all of the "good guys" aka Police, L, etc are written as the antagonists/villains standing in Lights way. But you are very true!

      @@MonitorComics you said yourself that a villain is defined by his selfish and immoral actions, by the literal definition, which kind of undermines that statement by your own words.

      Isn't Light considered an Anti-Hero or something along those lines? Like he does bad things for a just cause which seem dutiful in the eyes of himself and us the viewers, but in the eyes of the "antagonists" Light is a threat to society that must be apprehended no matter the costs. Idk

      But Light kills innocent people too with no care at all to the consequences. He believes himself to be a god so he thinks all actions he does are just.
      That has to be a villain, an anti-hero would not attack the innocent and think of themselves like that.

    Sometimes it's okay to have a generic villain who's more of a force of nature, not every character needs a complex backstory beyond their role unless the plot absolutely requires it. Villains like muscular simply enjoy killing people because it's what gives them joy in life, whereas Stain does what he does because he thinks it's his duty to purge Hero Sociaty of fake Hero Celebs and create a stronger generation of heroes worthy of the title Hero.

      @@zeroanimation3956 that’s where your wrong if the villain is one of those “I kill just cause I can” they can be very memorable. It’s about how they are put in the story. If that villain in question is not well written when it comes to dialogue or doesn’t do anything to make them feared then they’ll be goofy and forgotten. If the villain who just likes to kill does some crazy shit and can make people (readers or viewers) have goosebumps and make them recognize them as a treat to the protagonist then they’ll be memorable. Memorable for being a challenge, for being a struggle for the protagonist, for being a feared villain to everyone in the story. It’s harder to do then villains with a strong backstory or good motives but it is not impossible.

    MHA has some of my favorite villians. I love when the team of villians actually get along with one another, a well rounded team is always more threatening than the typical messy ones. I also like how Shiggy's journey was written. It was very similar to the heroes journey but for a Villain. The characters being self aware of their own issues even if they don't handle it in a healthy way makes an outcome where they're redeemed more believable.

      i know right! at the beginning he felt like a generic villain, destroying things bc he simply enjoys it and bc he's so angry with the world all the time, it seemed like he hated heroes in general bc he is the villain but over time he grew into that villainous leader role his master set him up for.
      I remember the exact moment I thought to myself this showed. When Shigaraki took Overhaul's bullets and decayed his arm, telling him he's the one who will lead the villains, mocking his now powerless state and even throwing his ideals in his face that someone who hates quirks as much as he does shouldnt have one then, like that was brutal! Some villains should be complex, and some should be simple. A simple villain would be like frieza, who doesnt have a very complex backstory or motivation. In your opinion, though, does a final villain *have* to be complex? i dont want my final villain to seem like a terribly written character compared to my other villain characters.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. I think it all comes down to personal preference. Some readers like final villains to be hyped up the entire series and expect a big payoff, think of someone like Fire Lord Ozai from ATLA. However, a final villain who is just evil for the hell of it might also be interesting because of how unexpected it is. Both could be done well so I dont think there's a wrong answer. Best of luck!

      Yea frieza doesnt have a compelling backstory or whatever but hes been foreshadowed extremely well. We see him in bits and pieces reference by nappa and vegeta who literallt almost killed goku. Its the buildup that made frieza such a good villain and also the pure malice frieza had.

      I feel like the final villain should be a complex because once the series is over it allows the viewer and/or reader continue to think about the series. It can make them question the ending more, create theories, and decide whether or not that villain was in the right or wrong and ultimately allowing the person to open up to whole new way of thinking

    • @MagnificantSasquatch
      @MagnificantSasquatch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The problem that too many current villains have is that they’re all trying to be David Xanatos. They’re all trying to be smarter than the story they’re in, and there’s a _very_ thin line between having a palatable mastermind, and having characters the story repeatedly bullshits its way into trying to say planned for everything all along (IE your Xehanorts). But yeah, villains don’t have to be complex to be good. Are they significant to the story, have they earned their place as the antagonist, do they demonstrate their right to it and do they provide the protagonists with challenges meaningful towards the core of the story. All long as you’ve hit all those, they don’t have to be twiddling their fingers in the shadows waiting for everything to line up so they can scream “ALL OF THIS WAS MY DESIGN”.

      like how all for one power allows him to take whatever he wants
      shigarakis allows him to destroy everything
      musculars allows him to kill whoever he wants
      alchemy in fma is a product of knowledge, so it gives people a false sense of controlling nature, to the extent that they believe they can do everything like God , and sometimes i think overhaul from mha takes that concept as well since hes portrayed as Buddha like crazy in the series, and also believes he can destroy and rebuild all of society as he pleases

    I’m glad you talked about over powering villains, as I have this one villain named Hunter and he is extremely powerful and it took armies to take him down due to his ability of regeneration and a amulet which works as his main source of power. The way the heroes of the story beat him were to sever his connection with the amulet and try to outwork his regeneration. I saw what you said and I hope this didn’t count as dumb luck as it took many people wailing on him for hours and many deaths for his abilities to stop working.

      @@MonitorComics also I just watched the world building video and his amulet actually has backstory of the whole continent as before much like in Naruto there were clans who stayed to themselves and fought, but after countries started to form they started to buy the allegiance of those clans to form their nations. Before splitting up and going to their new nations these clans decided to use one of these very powerful gems call a Selgala that could store the will of a person. They used this gem to store the power of each clan into it and make the Amulet of Kaimodia which was meant to unite the clans and nations as their powers were now one. It’s purpose was to give someone from a clan without power or someone with problems powers to bring justice and unity to the land.

    • @AceKeithElite
      @AceKeithElite 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also one more thing on Hunter, he was born into a clan known as the Oravians which were created by the goddess of the world Selga to eradicate any clans that in the future would use their power in ways to basically rule the continent. So the Oravians were very powerful with enhanced strength, flight, durability, small regeneration like if left alone they could heal from a sword slash in like 30 minutes, and they lived for 1000 years. But Hunter wasn’t born with any of these powers what do ever and was diagnosed to die at the age of 70 the average life spam for other clans. Due to this fact his was bullied all his adolescence, but once he met the woman of his dreams this drove him to find the amulet so he could live with her for the entirety of her life. Once he found it the power overwhelmed him and drove him to use it to use his powers for his own personal greed and pleasure like many had did to him. Later in life he took over one of the nations claiming kingship, leading to a political change in the world.

    Great video again!!!
    I appreciate that you distinguish between villains and antagonists because it is very frustrating how often the two get used as synonyms when they really aren't. Villains are evil characters not the character that is in direct opposition to the main character.
    My favourite villain character is Iago from Othello, he would be utterly destroyed by most anime villains but his charisma allows the protagonists to think that he is on their side and helping them whilst he is busy plotting their downfall, which is uncommon for the villain to do. Most villains and heroes know that they are fighting against each other. Shou Tucker and Umbridge are also admirable for how hateable they are, they mightn't be the SUPER EVIL SUPREME LORDS OF DARKNESS in their series but for both series they would easily be the most hated and that is a great feat for a character as fans will love murders and characters who do some of the most 'evil' things.

    You brought up a lot of very interesting perspectives on what you think makes a great villain but to me the thing that makes a great villain is one thing only, you need to give the villain a sense of weight/presence to them. (this can be done through varied methods like shear power, how active they are in the story/there presence, backstory etc.)
    like personally I don't feel you always need to give your villains tragic backstories or view themselves as the hero of the stories to make them a good villain, look at Michael Myers he has no reason for why he kills nor thinks he's the hero for his actions and that lack of reason is what makes them a terrifying/memorable villain. Same goes for the classic Disney villains they're mostly one dimensionally evil but they are some of the most remembered villains out there, why, because they have weight to them.
    this can even help make villains who only show up in the latter half of the story be memorable even with less time to develop, like gozer from ghostbusters, they only appeared at the end but they built up their presence and when they say they're here to destroy them, they simply just ask "are you a god?"
    I feel like with the number of memorable villains that don't always follow the same rules in terms of backstory, morality, sympathy, etc. all that matters for a villain is making it feel like they have weight/importance to the story.

    I think my favourite villain in anime and manga has got to be Shinobu Sensui from Yu Yu Hakusho created by one of my favourite manga authors Yoshihiro Togashi. He makes an appearance in the third story arc called Chapter Black, and is my favourite arc in the series.
    He’s probably one of the best written villains / antagonists in Shonen manga history, he’s quite overpowered in fighting abilities and has an interesting justifiable backstory to his character, and he also has multiple personalities, that makes his character even more complex.
    Yu Yu Hakusho is definitely worth your investment when it comes to villains and well written antagonists.
    As there’s two main villains in this series, Toguro and Shinobu Sensui
    both are well written as antagonists. Toguro is also interesting to talk about, and is similar to Sensui in terms of fighting power, but is arguably more stronger than Sensui due to his physical strength and abilities.

    People get it wrong about Griffith with the Band of the Hawk. The *only* bad thing he had ever done was what he ultimately did to Casca, and it was only to use her to get back at Guts for the one and only time he was ever beaten at anything.
    The rest of the Hawks wanted to elevate Griffith with everything they had, little did they know that Griffith was chosen by causality to grant that very wish.
    What makes Guts and Griffith's relationship so fascinating is that if Guts were to have never entered the picture, Griffith would have gone down as the greatest hero the world had ever known, with nothing to legitimately tarnish his name. Instead, he becomes an antagonist due to his ultimately fragile ego at having been upstaged by the only man who was better than him at any one thing, and importantly, refused to submit to him. That would not be tolerated.
    Not to say the guy in this video did this, but a lot of people seem to skim through Golden Age and miss vital details that make the eclipse as horrific as it is. It's way worse, and in some ways better (for the characters involved), than people make it out to be.

    I had an idea for a villain character that at least to me sounds mildly interesting.
    I'm not gonna go into many details because it's kind of a complicated setup, but essentially, the villain of this story played an enormous part in making the hero what he is now, and more than fighting him he just wants him to see the world as he does. This guy, long story short, has become immortal and provided with some degree of supernatural power about one century prior to the start of the story, and of course he's become the classic "corrupted by power" kinda guy, he believes his immortality is a gift from what he calls "the Divinity", and that he and all his fellow immortals embody its will, and that his job is to kill the unworthy and yadda yadda yadda clichéd god complex shit. Though he's not really trying to get himself known or to rule the world, he just lives his immortal life in the shadows of society killing criminals and other assholes. As simple as that.
    Then he kills the protagonist and his friends after mistaking them for members of a drug cartel. Now again, not going into details, the protagonist (and his other friends too but that's not important now) becomes immortal too, fueled by the desire of finding his killer and stop him because yeah, he's still a mass murderer who kills people I guess. And the villain, instead of trying to fight back, is intrigued by the hero. He's the first guy he killed in over a century who had the potential to become an immortal, and that became an immortal just to fight him. So, instead of being this unreachable, extremely powerful final boss, he tries to befriend the hero. He tries to be approachable and helpful to him, he wants to help him live his new life and tries to convert him to his point of view on life and on the people around them, he truly wants the hero to see what he sees. He wants an ally, and a friend. The hero is initially confused, since the guy he wants to stop so badly is just so open and within his reach, and has no idea of what to do. He recognizes that guy is doing good in his own distorted way, but he knows deep down that he's still killing people out of a subjective idea of righteousness.
    Then he starts killing his allies, and that's where shit hits the fan.
    So, yeah. Just wanted to share. Probably won't ever do anything with this concept but yeah

    Some of my favorite villains in animanga are
    1. Johan liebert (monster)
    2. Meruem (hunter hunter) I like meruem more as a charecter than how well he fits the role of a villain but either way hes good at both of those things.
    3. Friend (20th century boys)
    4. Garou (one punch man)
    5. Ougi oshino (monogatari)
    6. Bondrewd (made in abyss)
    7. Makima (chainsaw man)
    I havent read berserk, steel ball run and a lot of other series yet so I'm sure this list is bound to change soon
    Anyway great video! Though I was offended at the choices you picked to call iconic villains lol. Griffith and frieza fair, but muzan and mob s2 villain I dont agree with. Though I think mob psycho is a great show, mogami would be the much better choice as a best villain pick from the show imo.
    Well coming to demon slayer I dont think it has a single villain or even character I'd call great or iconic.

    This was an interesting video, I really like watching these sort of things. I do have a few thoughts on the tips. Specifically how they aren’t tips for villains in general, but for a very specific type of villain. Let me explain
    This is trying to craft a villain that could be seen as a hero from even the readers view. A way to see the current hero if things were even slightly off. It’s creating a mirror to what could be. Strong sense of morality and a compelling backstory aren’t necessarily traits of a good villain. Sometimes an extremely solid villain is their simplicity.
    For example in Invincible Omniman doesn’t have an extremely complex backstory. His sense of morality is unknown most of the time and even when revealed is simple. He’s not expanded on at all. The thing that makes him so compelling is the personal connection and constant presence. He flipped once so now people are on the edge of their seat to when he’ll flip again. He’s compelling cause he’s a mystery in his own right.
    I definitely have a few tips on villains but they’d also be for a very specific type of villain. That’s the thing with the villains though, many of them aren’t universal. Like sometimes a good villain doesn’t have a constant presence. So when they do show up it’s a big oh shit moment. Think of Muzan from Demon Slayer.
    Then there’s villains that do especially well when their morals are awful. You can’t relate with them, but you can understand them. Sometimes a good villain is predictable so you can see the next steps coming. When their actions aren’t random but still remain a threat it keeps your focus on them to divert attention from other things. They could be the fog that hides a mystery in plain sight.
    Edit: One example is Yoshikage Kira from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. He’s a dude with a simple goal, he’ll do anything to achieve it and that simplicity makes him predictable. If he’s in a certain situation you know how he’ll act. You can’t emphasize with him, because his morals are just so far removed, but there is an understanding.
    Anyhow, that’s all I got for now. The video definitely covered some really good points. I also saw a few other comments about villain types so I didn’t want to breach too much in already charted territory

    You really dont. What makes a villain work is charisma. They need to be chrasmatic. They dont need to relatible nor gray. Dio from Jjba, Jack Horner from Poost in boost, Vilgax and Kevin from Ben10 (2004), Malware snd Khyber from Ben10 OV are perfect example of this. They all pure evil. But we love them, because their charisma makes them amazing.

    I actually have a planned villain and he his multiple names, Boris, Kalytero Filos, Servant, Underling, and Young Diablo. Boris is a God who had dark and evil thoughts and was on the verge of becoming a maniac because of his father the god of the world neglecting him and making him feel like a bug but the apprentice of the god of the world befriends him and the thoughts start to clear up, but one day his ( I forgot to mention that his name is Theos) falls in love with a goddess and Boris becomes Jealous of him so he starts to get darker thoughts and the day that Theo's comes back The Devil (Diablo) takes Boris and convinces him that nobody in heaven wants him anymore so Boris becomes a demon and trains under Diablo soon becoming a skilled persuader and hypnotist. So Boris goes to Earth to possess 12,560 victims for over 120 years and returns back to hell stronger and smarter .After all of that he his recruited into the leagues of the strongest demons and is placed as Sergeant Major. In one of Boris's lives he possesses a young Russian warrior ( ill post the warrior stuff in the protagonist video) named Borris Fyodor Lov who grew up to be the worst serial killer in Russia and had over a million bodies including his wife and almost all his kids. After that mission Borris honed his skill even more and unlocked a technique name demon's flame which game him fire manipulation and body temperature ability's. He would soon team up with an Earth man Kingsley Cortez Wuyts Who had a special ability to control time given from the gods not knowing what this boy would grow up to be. Borris eventually learns about Kingsley's Grandkids on a planet called Awklohomus which the youngest twin Earless Lov was the most powerful one gaining Russian warrior powers and Light and Dark matter manipulation. Earless was tracking them down in order to kill both of them but Kingsley ended up fighting Earl and Died but Borris went back to hell to gather up his team of demons and murder all of them but with a bunch of sacrificing Earl and everyone on the planet killed Borris and his recruit of demons.

    There are of course exceptions to "every villain character is an antagonist". Take Megamind or Villainous for instance. Or a more arguable example, Avengers: Infinity War
    OR a more obscure example: the Russian campaign of Empire Earth, during most of which you control a political party that eventually conquers the country and becomes Novaya Russia. But its leader, Grigor Stoyanovich, has become somewhat of a dictator (complete with ominous-looking police force and military: the Black Robes), and even chose his robot bodyguard as his successor upon growing old. After continuing to conquer the world and then seeing that Grigor II doesn't care about the countless innocent lives Novaya Russia would end when taking over the US, his second-in-command Gral. Molotov carries out a plan to go back in time with the help of a badass American chick named Molly, in order to tell human Grigor what future awaits him and humanity, but even after defeating Novaya Russia (who had beaten Molotov to arriving with Grigor) he finds out Grigor was okay with the idea of all that conquest and killing from the very beginning (quote: "Do you think I'd have done any less myself, had I lived longer?"), which leaves Molotov with no choice but to kill him

    If you don't mind, could you make a video of how to portray mental disorders in a accurate manor? My main character is autistic and I want him to represent the autism community accurately without any stereotypes. I've done some research online, but I'm not 100% confident about it. It would be great help but You don't have to of course!

      LOL There are MANY great stories with villains as their protagonists. Some most notable being Death Note, Code Geass, and Attack On TItan (more recently.) Due to time constraints, I couldn't talk about EVERY kind of villain, but there are definitely some great ones that don't follow this advice. Hopefully that helps!

      @@MonitorComics Sure I like villains who are cold calculating, smart and don't succumb to their own hype or clout. Someone , where it's not their over confidence that leads to their downfall

    Still, I have to ask. Do all villains need to be connected to the main character?

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not necessarily! Sometimes the villain is just someone that the mc is tasked with dealing with. For example Ganon from The Legend of Zelda. He doesn't share any direct connection with Link, but Link is still tasked with stopping him

      Sorry bro, Squarespace has me bounded by a legal contract, LOL I had to make sure these next 4 videos were bangers so I can get paid the full amount. I also had to submit the videos way in advance too so I didn't have that much time to wait for collabs or edit a video longer than this. We'll definitely collab in the future!
