When detecting yards cut a clean, round or square plug of grass and dirt in one piece, place this on a towel, check the plug and hole again with the detector to locate the signal, then use a handheld pinpointer to locate the metal target. Then dump the loose dirt back in the hole, replace the plug of dirt and grass, and stomp it down neatly. No mess or damage to the grass. This is extremely important in public parks. If it`s too dry to dig neat plugs without causing damage don`t detect. New detectorists have gotten detecting banned in many public areas by leaving holes, metal trash they`ve uncovered, or spots of damaged dead grass everywhere. It should look like nobody ever dug a hole when you leave.
@@Pondsisawesome124 I took a friend detecting with me to a carnival area to hunt coins and he brought a big shovel. LOL! We used screwdrivers and a knife I have with a long, narrow, very thick blade made from a saw blade to pop the shallow coins from the ground. We found over 20 dollars in quarters just focusing on those using the target ID. I found one silver quarter inside an old batting cage. Under the metal bleachers there the detectors wouldn`t work so I just stabbed the knife into the ground repeatedly and it was easy to tell when I hit a coin. He was in a hurry to go somewhere or we would have found a lot more that day. If you focus on nickel and pull tab signals you can find gold rings after digging many dozens of pull tabs. I think the average is about 180 pulls tabs dug for each gold ring. Maybe a lot more.

I would add when digging a plug leave a small selection of it intact..that way you don't kill the root system..that way no brown dead grass later.
