Beautiful performance. Original. Ted's guitar dissonance mixed with the simplistic drum and bass (which is locked) made this version of Flipper ICONIC. A mixture of acid rock, 77 punk and free jazz...🤟🏾
I loved the fact that they played with every hardcore band back in the day and they were nothing like any of them. The sound they achieve on this is absolutely astonishing. Totally memorable performance.
Very amused at the fact that Will Shatter is playing a fretless bass during this performance. Steve DePace told me that Will had bought the bass just to confuse Ted Falconi.
I have one band tattoo and it's the Flipper logo on my calf. They are the soundtrack to a lot of fucked up good times and lots of late nights. This is so good.
You could attain balance and keep contemporary by getting a Cows tattoo on your uther calf....😉Srsly though, I didn't even get Flipper in my hardcore days, couple songs but beyond that, too slow, so no. I like to think that I went on to gain a vaster musical understanding etc. Sounds more sophisticated than "insufficiently fried."
lol funny. It’s still not as bad as these assholes running around with full face tattoos. I call them cattle because they’ve been branded and traded lol
The kings. I became a good musician, despite idolizing them. Maximum Rock n Roll reviewed my first band, and panned us saying we played Flipperesque dirges. I was so proud.
Wow, I have this on VHS, bought it long long ago. Finally saw them about 1990 in Fort Collins, CO at a roller rink that was bright lit attended by about 40 people with their next bassist John Dougherty. They played a set and then went in the back to play pool and didn't seem to interested in playing anymore so my friend and I went up on the stage. I grabbed Ted's guitar and my friend took the mic and Steve (the drummer) and John played some songs with us (Life, and a couple more, I don't remember). Steve was real nice and wanted to play. John was fucked up and willing. Bruce and Ted kept playing pool. Even though I could play ok I just made noise on the guitar, pulling off full barred frets and junk as off time as I could manage and it sounded ok. It was one of the top 37 highlights of my life. Love this band.
In the 38 years I've been loving Flipper, these versions are still the best. Bruce's stage presence during Sacrifice gives an insight into how brilliant and criminally underrated they were. And Will's In Your Arms and Shine still gets me everytime. Shame they didn't do Shed No Tears but then nothing can be perfectly perfect can it. Ted: "Will wishes he could have a mohawk." Will: "My hairs not working."😂😂😂
Here in UK in 1983 my friend & I loved Flipper and I still have all their early vinyl. The natural successors to PiL . When the whole world wants to play & sing in tune & serve up all old R n R cliches, admiring chops etc. For me Flipper were one of the purest expression of Punk Music and attitude.
Hmm. First one that comes to mind is off of Public Flipper Limited. Life has a sax playing in it, and Shine has like a bunch of saxes in it, and I want to say something else i couldn't quite identify, Apparently, it was common for Flipper to bring people on stage for a song or to and rock out, Legend has it, one show, a guy with a bassoon was up there. Thanks for answering! I knew about Public Flipper Limited, I was talking about them doing songs that have sax in the studio version as well. But I will check those out!
Turn up the bass on your system when you listen to this. Then drink a bottle of NyQuill, 3 shots of espresso, turn it up loud, and throw yourself around your apartment. Just like being there.
Wonder if Ted's still working at soundwave. I remember a while ago during my being a strung out piece of shit days, Ted saw me grab some half smoked ciggys to roll into a cigarette, said if it's coming down to that, I'm better off without it. And being an youngish ignorant shit at the time, just sat there like fuck you Ted, you were in flipper. But my friend playing bass in most of the bands I tried to get going worked the weekend shift so we'd see Ted doing his rounds, tending to all the plants around the warehouse. Awesome dude all around.
Some great versions here, Shine,In Your Arms, Sacrifice...The list goes on. If only Shed No Tears was on this set list. Can't have everything I suppose.
Loved how they really slowed down on this version. Showed this version to my friend and he thought it was doom, he was looking the band on metal archives 😂
Flipper in reno 1990 3 of us the bartender and a biker bad ass show they threw their set list away and said well u guys fuck the set list u tell us what u guys want us to play.
An entirely different scene back then. The music was much more experimental and musical, a lot more creative. Then came the ones who just played fast and loud, and bad composition. Even the attitude reflected it. a whole different era.
That's Bruce Loose, or Bruce Lose, as he was originally known. He sang for them until.... the early 2010s I think, when his back got so bad he couldn't really perform anymore. The other singer is Will Shatter. He left the band in 87 and died shortly thereafter from an accidental heroin overdose.
Why did they ruin it and fuck up the visuals for Shine? FFS! Epic version though. Sometimes I play people Flipper and they look at me as if I'm insane (and apparently I look like Bruce lol)The most original band of that scene imho.

@doberfag appreciate that 👍
I was there, too! Same experience! I used to stand in front of the amp and let the sound waves vibrate through my body.
Anybody see the Aquatic Park Berkeley show... 80-83 ?
Great stuff. Only Flipper can catch desperation, indifference, love and contempt in every song.
You nailed it.

I've seen this before but just noticed upon this viewing that he had a fretless bass.
I did not know the bass was playable without frets! That is cool!
@@OmegaRedFan Fretless basses have been a thing for several decades. Jaco Pastorius is the reason for that.
