Rita Marley is a Goddess. After reading her story in her own words... it gave me a deeper innerstanding of her persistence in all aspects of her life. She is no longer an Unsung Shero.❤❤❤ Thank you Ms. Whitmore for your sharing of recommendation on noteworthy books!!!
I've read the Rita Marley book with a mixed review. These are my personal opinions only. The book is an interesting read for sure and sheds light on Rita's life, up and downs of her life with BM , right up to his death where she comforted, supported and care for him along with (Cindy), Cedella his mother Whilst she is definitely strong and maintained this strength throughout her connection with Bob Marley, I have respect for her aspirations later on and the success she incurred but I dont understand why she had her last child with a lover/friend -Serita . She referred to this pregnancy as needing something to fill the void because of how things were developing with her husband. Tatty was a great support she wrote. Therefore to me, her first child Sharon was born who bob adopted. She then had 4 more with bob, adopted another and then had another. Yes, positively they all knew each other but for me , this would have been too messed up and complicated. I suppose if that's the lifestyle you're surrounded by then its accepted within your circle? Money was lacking and their lives were just an existence and hard hard times. No contraception but continued to have more children. Even her Aunty couldnt believe every time she became pregnant. Ok she has built a successful life and her children have been very successful on the back of their father's legacy and their mother determination to keep his legacy and vision alive , that's fantastic . She has created many charitable causes and foundations through her continuous efforts al8ng with her children which must be applauded. Bob would be proud no doubt. Therefore I conclude, I still absolutely adore Bob Marley's gift as an incredible artist who has left a positive indelible legacy BUT privately he doesnt equate with his public life. So extremeley disappointed to read about the sexual and physical abuse metred out by Bob Marley. Never acceptable nor should be tolerated. At one point she said she was raped by him. She bore his children and continued to protect , support and love him. Still toured with him whilst he bedded numerous women ., told not to be jealous, that she was hus Queen! Still wanting to lay with him at times because of the love. It seems it was one rule for him as a Rasta and one rule for Rasta Women at the time. Men could copulate indiscriminately, drink and basically please themselves. Women lay, provided babies , cleaned, cooked and worked. Rita admitts at times it was very hard to reconcile with this kind of life and yet the love remained Her sisters in the I3s witnessed her sadness and pain and when she rightly refused to do backing vocals for a song written for Cindy(mother of Damian Marley) and she refused, the I3s urged her to do the work because Bob would be mad! Bob himself said, " Sexual intercourse is a beautiful thing."....(so many women, the ones we know of!) If that's the lifestyle he wanted then why not divorce! My feeling is Rita still would have stayed and bore more children. She felt Bob's work was a mission and she had to do "the work."to deliver his messages world wide Lauren Hill(the singer) had many children by Rohan Marley and she too seems to have this mindset of bearing many children with him being around other women . She too has had a difficult connection and heartbreak with Rohan. So admiration and disappointment from reading the book for sure x
Bob Marley was a mess! I'd heard a lot about him and his many women. Sounds like a book I need to read but will make me mad. LOL! What women go through for men. Smh... Thanks for this passionate video Denise! I'm back home just finishing my photocopies and getting ready to to hit the sack and to read a little bit, since I didn't get a chance to read at all this weekend. Have a great week!
On one level I love his music, on another I agree with you. I've read the book. We all have free will and make our choices. Rita chose to stay despite knowing what she did and even the I3s encouraged her to do the backing vocals on a song he wrote for CS! Otherwise "Bob would be mad!" So to me it seems his behaviour and control over these women was evident. Whilst he was strong in his Rasta Faith he influenced others by his beliefs and the work and mission he had to do. "The work" as Rita put it. In the book hes also shown to wanting to keep track of Rita and still live the life he wanted to! She also talks of an incident of Rape in the book by Bob, but Love too! Therefore I conclude that It wasnt just Bob . Bob adopted her first child, she went on to have 4 with BM , adopted another of Bob's children from another of his relationships and then had another with her Friend/lover Tatty who Bob tried to fight off! Her name is Serita.
I agree with you about Steve. I wish it had a little more romance in the book. I don’t care about the other woman I want to hear about their live relationship. I’m just longing to find that in this book. I think Cedella book was funny and sad. I enjoyed them both to a point
I love and applaud the way that they have CONTROLLED his legacy and exclusive rights to ALL things Bob Marley. Does the book touch on that aspect? Thanks for review. I'm now intrigued and want to read this one.
Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley was a "Natural Mystic"! Alpharita Constantia "Rita" Marley, did not 'fully' understand that she was the First Wife! Who of us could say that we would not tremor in the presence of Mr. Marley? One whose Kundalini source was fully awakened and creative genius a rare treasure trove. Would we not want to mate? Could we withstand the opportunity to couple? To procreate! No not I.
There was ugliness which tainted the book for me. He should take care of his children , he created them, he created them! Seriously, that would be enough ! I couldnt do it. Yes run....a man , not a god but he messed up in that area!
thanks for this video. i am very interested to read some books set in Jamaica or with Jamaican culture unraveling here in USA. unfortunately i must admit i am bit hesitant to read the Rita Marley book -- as much as i want to & love listening 2 Rita marley-- because i do not want to accidentally "ruin" bob marley. Sometimes i get 2 much info and then the artist ceases to be a mysterious entity to me and begins to be almost 2 normal or even bad and it is destroyed. Having said that, i'm wondering if you could point out other books about Jamaica or even maybe something set, say, in Ghana or Nigeria . I ask for Ghana or Nigeria because i know English is spoken there, so maybe it can have a similar "feel" to Jamaica. It seems i am having a hard time finding books set in this type of place and it is making me a bit sad. So far, my only real success is with these titles by Marlon James who you might have heard of. He is very good; he even writes in the patois. I cannot believe it. I agree with you about Stephen Marley. All of Bob's musical kids have helped so much over the years to heighten my level of feeling this music. I am a white "Italian-American" but Bob taught me lots about Africa i never would have learned, since it is not taught here in US and often not even really discussed . I often sit here and wonder why the hip hop culture has never had this same feeling of always remembering Africa that the Jamaican reggae movement had. I also wonder why reggae culture never seems to have really become appreciated in hip hop culture. You would think there would be a bigger alliance but it really hasn't happened, though Jay-Z did have Damian marley in that one video. I dunno. I just think reggae was an amazing movement and in some odd way it almost, in retrospect, seems to have been more global than hip hop is now, because it had this bridge to Africa that no one (in pop culture i mean 2 say) even seems to have anymore. Like how is it possible they had this bridge in the 70s with no internet, but now in 2019 with internet ...no bridge really that i can see? It would be interesting if you made a video about it; i'd be interested to see what you have 2 say. Hope i didnt write too much, but i am a struggling writer so =p =) Ciao from the frosty northeast & thnx for making videos about Marley!
@@WhitmoreReads i took your advice & ordered an electronic copy of the book. I am reading it now, got thru the first chapter and a bit of the second. It is good, but im still a bit afraid jajaja. From the comment you made about going to Sumfest in Montego Bay, it sounded like you might live in Jamaica. I had watched anothr video of yours after and i thought you wre in Texas or something.

I want to read that John Coltrane book when I get out of this slump. The Rita Marley book I probably won't read it but I did enjoy the review.
