    Hello, I would like to thank you man, this stuff saved my butt.
    I had donne this before with win 2000 and 2003 but never with above versions.
    Recently got green light for IT budget and installed whole new domain controlers.
    Was having some issues to perform the migration, saw this video, it went down pretty good.
    I was able to decomission all old DC's and transfer the roles to the new 2016 PDC etc.
    MANY THANX TO YOU :)

    Hi, great video. You mentioned to run adprep for forest and domain in the notes, but it was not mentioned in the video. Do you need to run this on the 2008 DC with the 2016 media before promoting the 2016 server to a DC? Thanks.

    Thans for this self explanatory video on AD migration. I have few questions 1. Should we also nee dto upgrade functional level of domain and forest here? What if Windows 2008 R2 DC was also having AD certificate services installed and certificates are getting issued from here. Do our migration approach change in this scenario.

    Hello Vikas, I just emailed you. I have a server running windows server 2008. I need to replace it. I was wondering if this is the only way to do migration. I was planning on just buying a new server (dell R340 running server 2016) and setting up same Computer name/IPv4 address/domain and just unplugging my old server from the network and plugging in the new one to switchpanel and turning it on. I have 7 work stations that use 1 program. The program is installed as server on server and as work station on the workstations. I point to the correct IP address in the program and everything works. Please let me know. Thank you!

    Migrating from a 2003 server operating at 2008 (dc01) functionality level and has all the roles DC, dhcp, DNS, Logon etc. about 100users 100pcs, 10 servers sit in AD and a bunch of service accounts.
    I have two new DC’s both running 2016 server and are both GC’s, statics set, AD, DNS, DHCP roles have been added to the new servers Dc02 & DC03; Do I have to run adprep /forestprep & adprep /domainprep on the the new DC’s or the old before transferring roles?
    Then follow the video? My intention is to move everything off dc01 (has no file shares) to DC02 and have DC03 as a failover. Once completed decommission dc01 completely.

It will update old DC schema version automaticly to 69 in case of windows 2012 or 87 in case of 2016. It was in my case when I bypass this adprep commands and just promote new server.

    Our company are planning to migrate AD, DCHP, DNS from Server 2008 R2 to Server 2016, do I have to use the same Static IP address from the old server 2008 R for the new server 2016? Please advise, thanks, Sandra

    Demoting the old 2008 R2 AD isn't really needed if you retire the machine right? I just did the migration, and right after that killed the 2008 R2 machine, and my Exchange Server works just fine (after some initial longer noading times)...

      I was wrong, you should demote the old DC, now I have to clean up my new DC manually before I can join a new server :D Sorry for the mistake...

    I have seen all your ad migration videos in all you had followed same procedure/order to transfer the roles, do we need to follow the same to transfer the roles or is there any dependency?

      Hi Vijay,
      There are many way to transfer FSMO roles, like cmd powershell and GUI also.
      I was using most easy and easy way to transfer roles only.

      Vikas Singh I understand, my querie is do we need to any specific oder to transfer the roles ? all in your videos schema master was moved lastly....any specific reason to do that lastly...?

    • @LabsHandsOn
      @LabsHandsOn  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you can move any role first. there is not such dependency for moving FSMO roles.

    Do both have to be 64 bit? Or can I upgrade from Server 2008 32 bit to Server 2016 64 bit?

    • @LabsHandsOn
      @LabsHandsOn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    While promoting the server 2016
    adding a domain controller to an existing domain
    Getting error message:

    could not log onto the domain with the specified credential. Supply a valid credential and try again
    my administrator credential are correct
    i can connect the same machine in AD without any error (but i m unable to promote the server)

      Login to server 2016 with Domain or Enterprise admin rights, Then try to promote.
      Also check DNS Setting for both new and old DNS.

    Im running my DHCP on my old Win 2008 Server. When I do this step, does my DHCP role also automatically transfered or sync to Win 2016?

    • @LabsHandsOn
      @LabsHandsOn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No ad migration will do ad and dns migration automatically.
      For dhcp migration check my other video

    Dear Vikas,Thank you very much this very useful video!
    I would like to extend it with the following important information:
    Before start the 2016 AD Domain services installation please doublecheck SYSVOL replication type on DC's because if it's not DFS (the older one is FRS) then the new 2016 DC cannot replicate SYSVOL directory and until it cannot be a DC.Of course if the original DC was 2008 R2 the replication type is DFS. The older Window Server 2008 used FRS if the Domain Raise level is 2003.
    My original DC was 2008 and I needed to migrate replication FRS to DFS and after that I could promote the new 2016 server as a DC with your guidance.
    Here is the FRS to DFS migration guide:
    blogs.technet.microsoft.com/schadinio/2010/08/10/active-directory-sysvol-replication-migration-guide-frs-to-dfs-replication/

      Hi Agus,
      Yes, you can do that. You can change new server 2016 IP Address after Migration and AD Demote from old server.
