i guess this kindof competes with the new Schiit Magni Unity with the built in dac, where the unity has a bit more power and having the choice of being an all in one, the Atom has the added benefit of basically a built in 4.4 to SE adaptor plus engravable, clutch . This hobby is getting really accessible

The first atom was staggeringly clean and powerful for the money, my main complaint was with the housing feeling and sounding like a biscuit tin liner. I'm glad to see them reclaim the entry segment again, will be interesting to see their UK pricing and availability.

@chethammer the zen dacs great but honestly theres better combos forbthe money especially in dongles, my hiby fc6 crushes my zen dac especially when paired with a good hybrid. The zen dacs just not very resolving or lively by comparison

The main difference between the Atom 2 and the Atom+ is that the Atom 2 has more power for low impedance headphones. Their power is nearly the same at 150 ohms and up, but at 32 ohms the Atom 2 is 2.65 watts compared to 1 watt for the Atom+. The Atom 2 is also a little cleaner.
I feel like a lot of indie rock songs are bops but lack in recording quality. Sometimes it's an intentional grungy sound which is fine but other times it falls short. (Example: Blac Rabbit - All Good)
when you turn up the volume all the way is there distortion? I’m a louder listener and am in desperate need of a clean, LOUD sounding solid state for my anandas. also, my album that i love but is poorly recorded is selfish machines by pierce the veil. It takes a bit to get used to but it’s sooooo neutral, it sounds flat but worse.
I got a 4.4mm cable for that reason that I can have both headphones and speakers at the same time for studio purpose so that gives me options. ( not as good as a switch but well it's a good price).

Sold my fiio k7 and bought the Atom 2 stack. The stack is a bit brighter, more detailed, clearer, has a bigger soundstage. The fiio k7 is warmer and a bit more full sounding but dull in comparison most of the time. I felt like a blanket was lifted when I went to the Atom 2 stack.
TL;DR - Yes. Longer answer: Judging by specs of the Atom Amp 2 - max voltage with no clipping is 9.28V (max power 143mW) when connected to 600Ohm headphones (which is max SPL of 117.5dB). Beyerdynamic states the max power rating of 0.1W (100mW) and max voltage of 7.75V for the DT 880 600Ohm driver (which is max SPL of 116dB). Anything above that is damaging the driver (not to mention that your hearing will be damaged if you listen to music at that level for a while). So when you take all of this into account the Atom Amp 2 should be able to power the DT 880 600Ohm with no issues (most probably in high gain though depending on your listening level). Alternatives that are cheap and should be able to run the DT 880 600Ohm are Topping L30II or Topping L50 (they can do 13.8V (about 317mW) in 600Ohm). The only difference being that the L50 clips at 13.8V and L30II doesn't however you shouldn't be even listenting at those levels. Keep in mind that I am talking about maximum values that the manufacturer specified. Some people claim to run the DT880 600 to their best you need a source with high output impedance, some say you need a speaker amp (because of higher voltage and power output) but strictly theoretically speaking to what the manufacturer specified all of the devices I listed should not have issues. Even though there is no scientific evidence that a high output impedance would impact the sound of these specific headphones (check diyaudioheaven for more details), you could increase the output impeadance of these amps (in a similar fashion as with the Truthear x Crinacle Zero: RED's 10Ohm impedance adapter). With an impedance adapter of let's say 120Ohm all of these devices are still able to run the DT880 600Ohm at their maximum rated level.

Oh wow. I just bought my 35 year old son (and his family) an LP60 turntable and self powered (Klipsch) speakers. I wonder how this Atom 2 amp would work hooked up to the LP60.
Started with my onboard motherboard audio (asus b550f gaming's alc1220A realtek) with dt990 pros. also tried the dt880s as well with that and wasnt pleased. also tried the akg k371's and the hd600s with that but this time i still have both of them to actually try with this stack combo instead of just the onboard audio and i love them both but i think im going to refund the k371 just because the difference is night and day with this stack. very pleased with my first stack and dont see a reason to ever upgrade.
Does that mean someone could be happy with it if they dont compare with full power or is there enough left on the table that you really do need that stronger amp to appreciate it?@@ZReviews

You should review the Schiit Syn, since you have a lot more home theater setup in your bag than most Hifi gear reviewers. Also, ‘The way you used to do’ by queens of the Stone Age sounds fucking awesome on my “audiophile🧐” setup. ‘Go with the flow’ is indeed a terrible recording though…

I already own the SMSL SU-1, but it's busy tied to my living room stereo. What I need/want is a third Wiim Mini for my kitchen counter slash bar for a stack sort of like this so I can listen to my Katos standing like a man should while drinking his IPA beer at a bar. But I think instead of the Atom dac I want some kind of cool upgrade dac, like a Geshelli with a wood case, and then use the SU-1 with this Atom 2 Amp thing. By the time I make up my mind I'll have enough saved up for an endgame amp so who knows.
The Pursuit of Happiness - great songs, terrible recording. Long time ago I got the 128mb mp3s and always thought, damn this sounds terrible, need to get the CD. So they put out a remastered CD that I bot, ripped it to flac - and it still sounds the same.
Funny I came here to see the review because my last 3 Schiit dacs did this. Jot 2 with ESS 9028 was solid but Modius and Bifrost 2s I kept having to unplug no matter what usb port 7:14 or computers I tried. Not dismissing your comment just good to hear actually while comparing.
@@valkyrieorion7200 Heh my current setup is the Jot 2 with ess 9028 as well. Haven't had any issues with it for 2 years. I only power it off once every 6 months lol. I have a schiit modi\magni stack that was solid as well but I use that with my phone now instead of the pc. I still use my JDS dac at work, I just have to unplug from the pc every so often. It does one thing weird, when you turn on the pc, windows always mutes the sound so you have to enable it every time. It's probably some JDS setting to keep you from blowing out your hearing if you have the volume way up.

My pick is Times Like These by Foo Fighters. It sounds crunchy as all hell during the louder sections.
Im sticking to my Zen Dac, for my Sennheisers the magic button is the medicine they need... And Europe is a thing too....

RCA cables to connect the DAC to your AMP, if you bought the bundle from JDSlabs then it comes with it. If not, then amazon is your best friend

Zen Stack isn't good value for money atm. Schiit Magni Unity, Fiio K11, Topping DX3 Pro + Bluetooth, JDS Atom stack are all better options right now

Most non-commercial metal is either recorded pretty poorly to just okay (sometimes intentionally, sometimes not, depending on the genre).
Same goes for most commercial metal frankly. It may be recorded properly but most albums get brickwalled in mastering
I love those World's Best cables. I kinda got the same one's but I opted for the shiny black chrome ends. I can't say I disagree with their name yet.
Those cables are legit and tested with real specs. No snake oil

I already own the SMSL SU-1, but it's busy tied to my living room stereo. What I need/want is a third Wiim Mini for my kitchen counter slash bar for a stack sort of like this so I can listen to my Katos standing like a man should while drinking his IPA beer at a bar.
But I think instead of the Atom dac I want some kind of cool upgrade dac, like a Geshelli with a wood case, and then use the SU-1 with this Atom 2 Amp thing.
By the time I make up my mind I'll have enough saved up for an endgame amp so who knows.

There should just be a switch that turns on the rear line outs. Should have nothing to do with what's plugged int. So dumb and frustrating.

I'm more of a Schiit fan, I had JDS in the past and it was so buggy (randomly would turn off) that I gave up and went to Schiit.
Funny I came here to see the review because my last 3 Schiit dacs did this. Jot 2 with ESS 9028 was solid but Modius and Bifrost 2s I kept having to unplug no matter what usb port 7:14 or computers I tried. Not dismissing your comment just good to hear actually while comparing.
@@valkyrieorion7200 Heh my current setup is the Jot 2 with ess 9028 as well. Haven't had any issues with it for 2 years. I only power it off once every 6 months lol. I have a schiit modi\magni stack that was solid as well but I use that with my phone now instead of the pc. I still use my JDS dac at work, I just have to unplug from the pc every so often. It does one thing weird, when you turn on the pc, windows always mutes the sound so you have to enable it every time. It's probably some JDS setting to keep you from blowing out your hearing if you have the volume way up.
